    Default Dry skin question

So today my skin felt dry, especially on my back and chest. I began to rub on lotion and then noticed that what looked like lots of dry skin and lotion was flaking off into my hands.

Hmmm. Should I continue to apply lotion? Should I exfoliate in the shower and then apply more lotion? Should I try a moisturizing body wash? Some of those oils I hear about?

I know this might sound absurd but it is really bothering me.

Extra virgin oil oil, jojoba oil, sweet almond oil, and avocado oil are a godsend for my super dry, tight, and itchy skin. You can mix these in with your lotion, or if planning to just hop into bed wearing sweat pants, you can wear alone for a great overnight treatment. Always apply some type of moisture straight after the shower. Try to reduce the water temperature, the hotter the water, the more your skin and hair will dry out.

Make sure the lotion you're using doesn't contain mineral oil, which can clog pores, or alcohol, which will just dry your skin out even more in the long run. Exfoliate 2-3 times a week using a loofah and a scrub. You can make your own scrubs that work great using honey, an oil, and dead sea salt or sugar.

It might be a better investment to buy a little humidifier. I love mine and it was $30 at Target. Otherwise you'll keep needing to apply lotion without actually solving the problem.

Exfoliate the dead skin off, since it's already flaking, and then use pure oils or body butters. Like BuffyLovR said, jojoba oil, almond oil, etc., are great for your skin, and you can also use pure shea butter or cocoa butter. People with very dry skin usually respond best to simple moisturizers without a bunch of additives. I also think a humidifier is a great idea, it will help you in the long run, whereas moisturizers are more of a short term solution until your skin dries out again.

I really like the Olay Quench lotion, it's in a purple bottle and makes my skin SOOOO silky.

Don't just rub oil on you EAT IT! That's right I said eat fat However, make sure it is the right kind. I have had HORRIBLY dry skin and chapped lips every winter I can remember until this year when I started eating walnuts, avacados and drizzling my veggies with olive oil. I sometimes take flax oil when I feel brave, lol. It tastes awful. You can get it in caplets and works wonders, but I havent' done the caplet thing yet. Good luck!

^ It literally spews moisture into the air by converting water into an extremely fine mist, so the water stays suspended in the air. Great for locations with dry winters!

Mine is an ultrasonic humidifier..and it seems to work really well. Crank dat baby up!

I would exfoliate if its really bad and then apply lotion. Dont use hot water when showering/bathing as it dries out the skin and hair. I always rinse my hair and face with cooler water before I get out, as my face used to get very dry, now it doesnt.

^ We had 2 humidifiers.. One that gave off air, then we bought another one that gave off steam like (ultrasonic humidifier)... Those help a lot during winter, esp with a dry nose! I honestly cannot tell whether it has helped my skin, since my skin is generally oily be nature... But I do recommend those for dry bloody noses!

Apply the moisturizer/oil to damp skin, before toweling off, to lock in the moisture. You will notice a tremendous difference.

Somebody in another thread mentioned a chlorine filtering shower head. I found a few on amazon. Haven't ordered yet, but there is one under 20 bucks. That might help as well. I know here, we have a lot of drying agents in our water and that contributes to the dry skin and hair breakage we experience.

I shower in only filtered water. I also only drink filtered water. I use the Jonathan Beauty Water shower head, it's okay, the filter tends to get leaks easily. They say it's equivalent to showering in spring water. I've heard there's another one just a little bit less expensive but it's almost the exact same thing, without all the leak problems.

It's on my wishlist! Several people compare it to the Jonathon one, so I'm assuming this is the one J.D. is referring to.
