Thumbs down Impossible to be stylish in public.....

This has been happening for awhile and it really annoys me. Here in Australia, i understand a lot of people indulge in the lazy beach lifestyle that reflects in relaxed clothing choices of uniforms such as denim shorts and flip flops and dresses. which is fine, each to their own.

i'm a fashion major, and european, so i hit the streets looking stylish but not too flashy or skanky or anything. usually everytime i wear something stylish like today [black and white sass & bide dress with black n white allanah hill jumper, stockings and boots] it draws too much male attention. i was standing at the crossing and a man walks past and whispers 'baby you look fucken hot'. the other time i was walking to the real estate is skinny jeans, ankle boots and a black n white blazer and walking out of mcdonalds these truckies at the drive thru shouted 'yeah work it redhead babe! you soo hot!! *beeps horn* and i was so embarassed. and annoyed.

when im dressed down in leggings and a jumper going to work nothing really happens. but it bothers me that i have to sacrifice my style in order to have a quiet day with no harrassment from males of the public.

    does anyone else get that?

^I can sympathize. Where I live, everyone is in Uggs, leggings, and these disgusting baggy tunics year round, with their hair in sloppy buns.

I was raised to actually DRESS for the day, so I am always very pulled together, with well made, fitted clothes, and actual shoes, not flip flops or Uggs. I never go out without my makeup and my hair at least neatly smoothed back.

Wherever I go, I get stares, comments, etc.

It's a sad age where dressing neatly is shocking.

I do find it amusing though when people complain about running into an ex, old friend, wahtever, and they complain that they "looked like a mess" that day. Then two minutes later they'll make fun of me for always looking nice. Hey, if you took a 15 extra minutes a day, you'd never have any more of those "Oh god I look like hell" days!

I thought guys where just generally like this cause I get it when Im wearing no makeup, workout shorts, flip flops and a t-shirt. Had some freak tell me I had the beautiful eyes he'd ever seen when I came off the train yesterday wearing a t-shirt dress and flat sandals. Even walking down the street with a massive, I mean huge male friend of mine, guys still make dumbass comments. Good thing he's not my husband cause he's pretty much 3x the size of any normal guy.

I guess just take it as a compliment that you are looking hot. But ya its pretty lame.

Please don't let some rude remarks from thoughtless people keep you from dressing to suit your taste.

Please don't give those rude people power over you!

You are lovely ladies who are dressing in style--some people just get jealous, that's all!

(And the men who holler crude remarks are just little boys at heart--who pays attention to the babblings of an infant?)

I think guys are just stupid. I was walking out of the gym yesterday after my yoga class and a guy says "Wow, nice funbags! You're hot baby!" I was so shocked I just had to start laughing. Really? "Nice funbags?" In the history of the world, has that line ever worked? We should just start dressing up to see what stupid things guys will say next.

I get the same bloody thing (also in Melbourne, Oz), and my job requires me to look uber-professional five days a week, so there's really nothing to be done about it except ignore the losers.

i dont know i guess i just need a place to went. i should just get a car and drive everywhere. im so sick of male attention outside of work, its part of the reason i dont have the blonde hair anymore.
the only time i actually dress sexy is when my bf walks me. then i get to enjoy the luxory of people fucking off

I get it no matter if I look like shit or I'm dressed up. I'm usually in laid back fashion cause I don't want to get my good clothes dirty from work. men just like to see how we react. I was going into my local wicca store wearing one of my favorite faded tees and blue jeans. I was getting cat calls from a bunch of boys driving by. I just smiled and and did alittle finger wave and they almost ran into a pole lol.

    They'd accept.

This isn't anything new. My ancestors had it rough 60,000 years ago, too. People just walked around with barely a sash covering them. Then one of my cousins had the nerve to put on some lion skin, and was getting nothing but click calls the rest of the day! Like wearing clothes is an invitation!

Same. It's been happening to me for over a decade... so I guess I've just accepted it as normal, learned to ignore it and never given it much thought.

I don't quite get this. Not many guys I know would accept a dildo up the ass, even from a hot girl--and I live in Key West!

Sorry to say, they'd probably love it--until they stopped and thought about what you really said of course (dildo up the ass). It would shut a lot of them up, but I fear it would only egg on the really nasty ones. Of course, if you possess verbal skill and have a loud voice, you could then humiliate them utterly.

This reminds me of that thread 'It's so hard to be pretty.' I know women who get harassed whether they are all dolled up or not, but usually the flashy or stylish clothes will attract a little more attention. Which is a shame if it is the negative sort. Better than being ugly, but still clearly annoying.

If you are a man who has gone out with a woman all sexed up, you will know that it is indeed annoying, just having to listen to what some of these rude assholes will say. It's so clearly disrespectful. I have come very close to many fights from this shit, especially in Daytona where the people tend to be rude as hell, male and female.

yeah i was just thinkin about that thread as well. but unlike the pretty thing, it bothers me more i cant look like i walked out of the pages of the fashion magazine without having rude loud and horny male followers. of course pretty people get attention. but why the style? i hardly ever get harrassed in sweats. i like being pretty though, its easier for me to get what i want

I think it intimidates people. Especially in areas where they aren't used to it. I used to run into that in Daytona a lot, especially when I first moved there and was still dressing up a lot. It's a lot better here (though way too hot to wear most nicer men's clothing like jackets, etc.), but even in an open-minded town like Key West I have run into people who just couldn't seem to handle it.

Of course that's a little different from a good-looking woman getting negative attention from guys. But I still think to some extent it can be over-compensating for the intimidation factor.

yeah, I have had hoots and hollers and whistles from guys when I'm wearing my exercise clothes walking down the street with my Ipod. Nine times out of ten it's a guy in a white van or pickup truck.

They may just notice you more when you dress nice, but don't stop dressing nicely because of it. It's a compliment. The real problem is when one day they STOP doing it!

I started to dress down, like those boots you mentioned and black pants etc. I cannot stand attention. If I want it, I'd dress up, this is the reason I hate dressing up (just fitted and nicely for the day) cause 100% you will get hit on. It just disgusts me, how some men think its ok to do that and say nasty comments when a girl just wants to look nice for the day!

This is the reason I started to dress down, i cannot stand the comments and usually am a bitch. Whether I am, I have a bitch face on, so many guys dont approach me either way but I hate the stares either way. I think girls understand this, dress up nicer, get more looks even if its for the day (or job etc) men will still hit on you. Dress down, men will still stare but maybe not as much as comment. Either way, men will stare and comment. I do know, I get hit on way more (to my face, and get guys walking up to me) whenever I dress up, when I dress down, they just look. I hate it, leave me alone to do my own thing. Bitch face works! Men cannot approach that, only to get rejected and those ones are usually stupid. So dress up or dress down, you will get looks either way. Ignore the comments, men are men and some need to learn manners.

i totally agree. though i have had bitchface on and men still come up with some bullshit line about 'smile baby youd look heaps hotter' or something along those lines. the only time i ever wear something remotely sexy with like cleavage or legs or something is when im walking with my bf. even then.
id just love to go to paris where it is the norm for every woman to look absolutely spectacular. i know they would still stare, but not so much comment, or if so it would sound really erotic in french, even if its something dirty

I decided a long time ago I'm just gonna wear whatever I want based on how I feel because whether its yoga pants and a top with sweat all over them after exercising at the gas station with some asshole bothering me or a nice blowup dress with flip flops with someone cat calling my bottom line remains the same. As long as you don't touch me I don't give a damn what you say. I can't argue with every person who wants to tangle with me. I only address outright in face disrespect or kind remarks. I heard in Hot Springs Ark in jean shorts and a tank, "you too cute to be out here getting all wet". I told him no one was too cute for rain. He said,"maybe so but sugar melts in the rain, didn't anybody tell you that." All I could say was wow well thanks because it was a compliment.

No matter what you wear someone is gonna bother you male or female. When I used to wear those weird Pleaser metal and wood or Tonys awesome wood shoes in the bible belt chicks and dudes would call me a stripper or hooker or goth or whatever. I don't have time to explain my fashion choices to people who clearly don't respect personal style. If it has a name on it in the south it's cool. Keep rocking your fashion, but invest in a nice pair of sunglasses. It sounds silly, but when I wear my sunglasses less people bother me. It's something about feeling like there is a part of me they can't even touch.
Thank Goodness I smartened up! The old me is dead and gone.

I'm a little suprised that no one has posted this site yet: http://www.ihollaback.org/

Its a website where women who have been harassed on the street can post photographs of the harassers. Yes, its a little silly/not the most effective, but doing something can feel better than doing nothing at all.

Its ridiculous that anyone should have to modify their clothing to avoid being accosted on the street. Some @$$hole yelling at you, much less approaching with a less-than-savory remark, is indicative that not only is her staring at you, sizing you up and deciding he finds you sexually attractive but he also thinks you need to know that you do, in fact, meet his standards! LUCKY YOU!

It makes me so mad that anyone thinks this is acceptable. IMO its a form of sexual assault: absolutely disgusting and not ever, ever okay.

I get harassed at least once a day dressed in my scrubbiest, oldest clothing and sometimes posting on hollaback makes me feel a little bit better... or responding with scathing replies... not that I can ever change anyone's minds LOL.

I'm sorry anyone else is going through this.
