    Default Indian Food????

Okay, so 99% of the time, I'm a raw foodist. But every now and then, I loooove to get Indian food. But...

Why is it so effing expensive? The other day I paid $13 for carryout of a little cup of shrimp masala with a little thingy of rice.

I am OBSESSED with masala. I think I would sell my soul for it. I neeedddz it.

    My questions:

Does anyone have a good masala (the one with a tomato base) recipe that I could just make? It can't be that difficult, right?

Also, why is it so expensive?

My ex, a trained chef, said Indian food is all about buying legitimate (i.e. imported) Indian spices from an Indian market.

Charlie, my roommate is from India, she lived there until she was 16, and she would know, in fact, she has a cookbook in our laundry room, so give me a few hours and I'll post what I found out.....

Good excuse for a trip to India to pick up spices and learn a little for yourself
I was there last Summer and stayed with this lovely old couple who gave me a big bag of their own family masala (spice blend).

^ I have no desire to visit India, even though I've heard good things. Just way too many people. I dunno.

Food prices are on the rise world wide... Depending on your locale ingredients are only going to get mor expensive... Add in cost of someone else preparing things for you, and youre getting into high numbers.

^ Yeah, I get that, but Indian food IME is definitely more expensive. I think it's because it's one of those things that people can't easily make at home. Like sushi. So restaurants can afford to jack up prices.

I totally agree with this! I LOVE Indian food as well, and its usually sooo freakin' expensive! But luckily for me, there is a new Indian place in the food court and you can choose two dishes plus a huge portion of rice and it's only five dollars yay! I guess sometimes living in a cheap place where the cost of living is uber low has its advantages afterall

My favorite Indian dishes are chicken tikka masala, butter chicken, coconut chicken, and yellow curry chicken. I used to eat samosas and pakoras, which are little vegetable appetizers, but I cut out fried foods from my diet. I also think naan bread can be quite addictive, especially if its hot from the oven with melted butter, garlic and herbs

Have you ever had a mango lassi? OMG they are soooo delish!! It's kind of like a yogurt-based mango smoothie, you have to try one!

    I love it too.
I think the expense is due in part to using so many different ingredients. It does take effort to prepare.
Get an entertainment book or check restaurant.com
A couple of my favorite spots are in both of those so it saves me a bit because I HAVE TO have it too.

I bought a little kit from the grocery store today (contained rice, spices, tomato paste), and it was actually really good. For $5, it definitely works.

^ Trader Joes actually has pretty decent indian food in the frozen section! Chicken tikka masala, palak paneer, vegetable samosas, garlic naan.. All for under $5. Amy's Organic and Ethnic Gourmet are also pretty good, they sell those brands at Whole Foods.

There is an Indian Grocery here in Colorado Springs. Part of an Indian Restaurant. Puts me in the mood to pick up a can of sharwoods curry powder. Makes an awesome chicken salad sandwich.

    Mmmmmmmmmmm curry.

Hey guys, I would like to strongly recommend a free iPhone app called Epicurious. You get about a million and a half recipes, all searchable, very well categorized, from all over the world. I actually looked up Garam Masala and it has the breakdown to make your own Masala base (I never knew it had dried miniature rosebuds in it?).

Also, each recipe comes with a shopping list that allows you to tick off the items in the ingredient list as you grab them at the grocery store. Genius app if you are a food lover!

I second Jadelove's suggestion! Trader Joe's is pretty awesome in general.

I'm lucky though, there's a really good Indian restaurant here that offers a $6 all you can eat buffet. I pig out baaaad every time I go.

I make my own Indian food, including the paneer cheese. You do have to invest in some quality spices but after that it's not so bad and really fun to make! Paneer is very easy to make, all you need is whole milk, lemon juice, and cheesecloth.

The cookbook I use most is Lord Krishna Cusine - The Art of Indian Vegetarian Cooking.

    Pre-made sauce/spice mixes!

Most supermarkets have them stocked in the ethnic aisle. Wholefoods has plenty. Even indian stores have blends for curry, korma, tikka masala, etc. Just add meat or veggies. For the dry mixes sometimes yogurt is required but the jarred mixes are pretty much good to go.

The indian store by me has dry spice blends that are $1.59 and are enough to make a whole pot of food or 4-6 servings.

Some Indian spices are really expensive especially saffron (I couldn't believe the price when I went to buy it), and good quality Indian food takes a long time to prepare.
