The best thing i have heard in a strip club to date:
customer: we should get married right now! we should get a shotgun marriage!
me: uhh... i think you are misunderstanding what a shotgun marriage means. A shotgun marriage means you knock me up and my daddy shows up at your door with a gun and forces you to marry me and raise the baby. You mean elope.
customer: hmm... nah actually i will take the shotgun marriage. At least then we would be having sex.

under some interpretations of Sharia law, which the majority of Egyptians support according to a Pew poll, it was HER fault !
I'm not trying to make 'light' of what happened, but a little reality is warranted. 'Western' moral codes and legal rights are certainly NOT universal. Additionally, a 'democratic' uprising offers no guarantees that 'Western' moral codes and legal rights will be any closer as a result ( and perhaps the opposite ).

I have a bad feeling about this. Egypt is going to fall to the Islamic nutjobs and that should scare everyone. I hope she gets better.
Jesus fucking christ. That shouldn't happen to anybody for any reason anywhere. I don't give a fuck what moral codes or imaginary god you bow to. Poor lady. Goddamn.

^^^ the problem of course is that, under Sharia law, none of her D cup cleavage, sexy blonde hair, tight jeaned butt etc. should have been 'on display'. And HER 'penalty' under Sharia law would probably have been something between flogging and being stoned to death !
(snip)"On October 30, 2008, the United Nations condemned the stoning to death of Aisha Duhulowa, a 13-year-old girl who had been gang-raped and then sentenced to death by a Sharia court for fornication (Zina). She was screaming and begging for mercy, but when some family members attempted to intervene, shots were fired by the Islamic militia and a baby was killed.
Local Sharia courts in Bangladesh regularly punish raped minor girls and women by flogging and beating them with shoes.[1] Similar cases of punishing raped women are Mina v. the State, Bibi v. the State and Bahadur v. the State.[2] Sharia courts in Pakistan have punished thousands of raped women by long term imprisonment.[3]
You might think that such horrific barbarity cannot be the real Sharia law; that it is a misapplication of the law by ignorant clergy. Sadly, neither is true.
There is a traceable dynamic in Sharia Law that is bound to lead to this barbarity. And unless we abandon these laws we will never be able to emerge from this barbarity. It was a blunder that Muslim jurists included rape in the Hudood section of Sharia Law that deals with murder, bodily harm, apostasy, drinking, defamation, theft, adultery and highway robbery. But anyone who tried to change these laws ended up banging their heads against the wall. Mawdudi, the founding father of modern Political Islam, claims that even if all the world’s Muslims together wanted to make the slightest change in these laws, they would not be allowed to do so"(snip)
Despite the US mainstream media cheerleading, it's necessary to keep perspective as to who this new Egyptian 'democracy' is composed of, what they value etc.
^^^
That didn't exactly improve my opinion of anybody bowing to any imaginary god! Yet more proof that fundamentalism is one of the poisons that needs to be eradicated for us to evolve as a people.

ugh i am reading about this topic on another forum, and i am disgusted wtih some of the comments. a lot of people are basically blaming the victim. they are saying she had no business being there and should have been covered and that she was fair game. although of course most of them will begin this sentence with 'its not the victims fault, but...'.
It was a group of women and then some soldiers who pulled her away from the gang.
also it seems unclear whether the violent mob was civillians or mubarak supporters dressed as civillians.

It definately happened AFTER Mubarak had left... The picture I've seen painted is it was a group of "frenzied civilians" who were going crazy in the excitment of him leaving.
But, who really knows? We may never know.
I really don't see how it matters, its totally fucking despicable no matter what. I'll never understand how a large group of "men" could ever let something like that happen.

What happened to her is horrible, but it could have just as easily happened here or in any other country. Women are sexually assaulted here all the time. I've even seen posts in this form by members who have been sexually assaulted.

thats really awful. unfortunately cases like this occured many times before and will probably happen in the future which is why im never ever ever going to the middle east to any muslim country for any reason. its just so easy to have a fatal misunderstanding, it really angers me. or even something like samantha in sex and the city 2.
dont even get me started on women's rights and the middle east.

It was a pretty horrifying attack. I was blown away to hear about it. I noticed footage of Katie Couric reporting from the square and being overwhelmed and thought it was probably a bad idea to report from the crowd. I NEVER thought something this sick would happen. Boy do I wish she had been armed but of course had she they would swear she was a secret agent!
It's a bit off the subject but this is a reason I understand the worker in Pakistan shooting a local who attacked him. What are you supposed to do, pretend there's no danger?
I forgot to say earlier that her attack was so obviously a set up. She'd been detained by cops days before and accused of spying or fomenting violent overthrow of the govt. So the "authorities" knew who she was. I believe they had her as well as others like Anderson Cooper under surveillance. They found the opportunity and struck. I think it was the mob of convicts Mubarek let out of prison in the fake prison break.

What was that phrase the egyptians use? Oh yeah " Boys are for pleasure, women are for breeding."
The don't give sweet fuck all for your reproductive rights, voting rights, educational rights, or your right not to be beaten for speaking without being spoken too.
The bottom rung Muslim man has one thing to look forward too. He is not a woman.
Step out of North America or Western Europe and life is very cheap. Sure you can travel to some exotic places. Those places are protected by machine gun carrying government troops.
Your Rights are what ever the locale your in, lets you have. Your American, Canadian, or European Union Rights mean absolutely nothing if your feet are not on your own sovereign soil. The American "Bill of Rights" is not universally emulated.
Right now, their are American Marines and Special forces units gearing up to save some people because they believe they have "Rights" or "Support Democracy".
The irony being some liberal is going to be saved by a warrior they would have spit on last weekend, and now pleading for them to get their quicker.

I am still really disturbed at the blaming the victim mentality.

^ Yeah... I can't read this stuff anymore, it is so deeply disturbing to me. These people make me me fucking sick. What happened to that poor woman is terrible enough, but these reactions just blow me away. I can't believe people can be so horribleThe Middle East is a very dangerous place for women though, if I was a female journalist I couldn't go over there, there's just too much risk.

I gotta stop reading this thread... first I get angry, then I get sick to my stomach... what the fuck is wrong with epople?

I think for me the lesson is that people really can be this horrible. I think for a lot of us who grow up in America, it's hard to remember that civilization is just a false construct and that it really is a jungle out there. Where I grew up, we always had someone wandering out into the wilderness and dying because they forgot that "the beauty of nature" couldn't care less if they lived or died.
I believe you have to take some responsibility for your actions. I think she knew the risks and knew it was a dangerous job she was doing. Which makes her a lot braver and smarter than her critics. She wasn't some dumb co-ed who got drunk alone with a group of guys. She took precautions, she was careful, but she went in because she had a job to do. Soldiers and fire fighters go into dangerous situations and sometimes get hurt. You don't see people blaming them. I don't understand why people are saying "silly girl should have known better."
I've been a fan of Lara Logan ever since her appearance on the Daily Show. Sexual assault is a pretty broad term, here's hoping that it was more of a beating than a brutal gang rape.

When I heard this I was stunned. I have been watching her reporting from the middle east for what seems like a year now. She just seems so laid-back and sweet.
On NPR, it was said that she was saved "by a man and a group of woman".
At least the women there are getting a chance to stand up for themselves now.

Im reading through news clips now... the official news clip is very vague and just says she was brutally sexually assaulted for a long period of time.
She is trying to protect her privacy, understandably, for now. so she hasnt discussed the details.
most of the opinions seem to think that she was gang raped.
idk, either way, being brutally assaulted for a long period of time is not a good thing. it sounds to me like it went beyond external groping.

wow. fuck the people who did that to her. and fuck the assholes who are saying horrible things about her. what if that was their mother, or their daughter, or wife? she wasn't just groped for a second. what she went through will cause a lifetime of emotional damage (and maybe physical damage as well). the fact that the entire country knows about it probably makes her feel worse. but the fact that some asshats are being unsupportive pricks? fuck that.

According to that story it was not a rape.
