Default What is reasonable pay for photoshoot?

I have a friend that is a photographer who offered me some modeling work. He described it as "non nude" but very suggestive. There would be no sex.

He said the pay was something like $250 a shoot. Does this sound reasonable?

I have never done any work like this so any suggestions would be great.

Sounds reasonable for non-nude for someone with no experience (I'm assuming if you don't no prices you've got no modelling experience) depending on what he's planning to do with the photos.

he said the pics were for a private collector.

He said costumes and clothes will be provided. I will do 3 or 4 outfits and be done within 2 hrs.

Photographers pay a model when they feel that she has a look that's great for his portfolio, or for a project he's currently working on.

Yes, $250 is reasonable for a shoot.

    $250 is a good rate.

Rates vary dramatically, depending on what the shoot is for. If the shoot is good for exposure (say, the photographer is famous or respected, or it's for print publication, etc.), it's rare for the photographer to pay. If you can get photos from the shoot for your portfolio that you can use, it's rare for him to pay.

If the photographer is hiring a model to work through a few ideas or to experiment for his own portfolio, typically a photographer will pay anywhere from cab fare to $300 for a few hours. Sometimes he'll only provide hair and makeup. Sometimes nothing, but again, that's usually when he is really established and respected. And these are generally scenarios where the photographer isn't getting paid for the shoot, or at least not enough to cover basic expenses. Also, I'm talking about NYC rates - I'm not sure if these rates differ outside of NYC.

Commercial shoots are a little different. If the photographer is getting paid a lot of money, whether it's from a company or an individual, then it's only fair to pass that budget onto the model. But since payment can run a spectrum (they can be anywhere from $500 to $25k and up), the model is supposed to get a fair cut. So, honestly, whether $250 is a fair rate depends on what he's getting for the shoot overall. 15-25% is pretty fair (as bad as it sounds), because the photographer also has to pay for hair and makeup, an assistant, retouching, sometimes equipment rental, etc.

Overall, $250 for suggestive and/or implied nudes is really good. That rate is more common for nude shoots.

Ok, i got some more info today. He is a newer photographer however he comes off as very professional. He has a client that likes certain types of girls/pictures and apparently i fit the look. The shoot will about a 10 min drive from my house.

One of the outfits is a cheerleader uniform, one is a skimpy bikini, and the others will be regular looking clothes. In all the cases he wants me to flirtatiously strip to my underwear. Thong, "whaletail", and up skirt photos that look sort of candid and amateur and youthful is what he wants.

He sent me another photographers site giving me examples of what he wants. The pay is $250 until he is done, he said it should be 2-3 hrs. If all goes well there will be more work soon after...

It sounds like fun so i think i am going to give it a try.

Has anyone else ran into an offer like this? Is there anything i need to watch out for or that i should ask for?

    Thanks

I would say you should have a chaperone, or tell someone exactly where you're going to be and make sure he knows that someone knows where you are and with who (and tell him you will be asking to look at his ID as well) and text that info to yourfriend.

$250 is really good for the shoot that you're doing.

What kind of vibe did you get from the photographer during your phone/e-mail conversations with him? As long as you're comfortable with the shoot details and the photographer, it's cool. I don't usually bring anyone with me to a shoot (some models do), but that's an option for you if the photographer allows it, or you could just let a friend/family member know where you'll be, like FiendishGyrator suggested.
