Well, I've been wanting to go to nail school, they don't accept grants other than 1 from OPI, which is $500.00 if you can get that (school is like 2000.00+).
I've tried to get hired in a beauty salon, which is like trying to get hired anywhere else = 0. I think they mainly want in-school, licensed or getting license people for even the shampoo/helper position, even though they say 'no expereience'. Also I've tried for the receptionist positon, same thing as shampoo person.
Sorry not too much help here.

Cosmetology school is very fun and easy. your days are spent working on doll heads,(cutting, coloring, highlighting, roller sets, pin curls ect.) Working on fellow students(you get to practice on you friends in class so iff you want your hair colored and runway highlights done you can have you friend do them(doesnt get much better than going to school to get your hair done!), Working on paying customers- At the local beauty schools you can usually go in and get services done for very cheap and those are the other people you will be practicing on, with your teacher close by in case you have questions. (if you've never gone it's deff. worth trying where I went to school they charged 8$ for a haircut and did everything from cuts, relaxers, waxing, acrylics ect on the clients. Where I went I got a small grant but vocational schools usually get the short end of stick when it come to those so I still have quite a bit to pay back. Your completion is based on your states hour requirments. Colorado has one of the highest and Pennsylvanis has one of the lowest at 1250 if I remember correctly. (shouldnt be hard to find your state's requirments online)

After you have completed your hours yo.u have to take your state boards which for me cost about 175$ for everything. It's half 'theory' questions and randomized state law questions and half 'practical' work- practical is your hands on precedures.(demonstrating cutting, relaxers, perms, curling irion set, ect) In pa you use one of the doll heads but I think in some states you actually bring you own model to demonsrate on.
If you have any other questions feel free to ask, after i graduating i went back for another few hundred hours for my teachers liscence so im technically qyalified to teach but that is not why i went back, it's a good idea to go back for your teacher's in case you ever move out of state because like i said they all have diff. requirment.

I went to beauty school for about 4 months and then dropped out to continue college instead. It was a lot easier than traditional school except that when you start cutting hair for paying customers, you're on your feet all day (this was hard for me because I was also working two other jobs, and it was exhausting!). But I met a lot of great people and a ton of friends in the process.

My school was about $2500 total. If you're serious about it, do a lot of research on the schools you're considering, and try to get into the best one in your area. They always let prospective students tour the facilities, so you can see what the place is like & peek in on classes.

The starting wage for cosmetologists is pretty low, so be aware of that. You need to go to a good school and get into a higher end salon if you want to start making decent money right away.
