Default My little pet died :(

I know this sounds stupid to get upset over, but I can't help it.

I live in a small apartment in the middle of no where; besides my boyfriend who visits on weekends (lives far away), my two little birds were my only company. Recently, things have been tough-my grandmother died, a friend was killed by a drunk driver, so my little apartment and my little birds were my tiny slice of peace.

I let my birds fly freely when I'm home, so while I was on the computer today, my super-friendly bird flew over, sat on my shoulder as usual, etc. He was eating his treats and playing with his toys.

I put them back in their cage while I got a shower, and when I got out, the little bird was on the bottom of his cage, making a god-awful wheezing sound. I ran for the phone and tried calling my vet, but before she picked up he died

The poor other bird is so depressed-the two of them were inseperable, so now he keeps looking for the dead friend.

I scrubbed the cage, so I hope he's okay, but I have no idea what happened to the other one while I was in the shower

Aww hun, I'm so sorry I think losing a pet is a big deal, whether its a bird or a dog or whatever. Especially given how much it meant to you! God knows if anything happened to my cat, I'd be off work for weeks getting over it - pets are like family. I would still talk to your vet about what happened, and maybe take your other bird in for a check-up just to make sure.

    *hugs*

Sorry to hear about your loss(es)!
My bird died recently also... it happened so fast. She went from perfectly fine to no longer amongst the living in less than 20 minutes.
It's always hard to replace a pet... but maybe you should since your remaining one is used to having a companion?

Please accept my sincere sympathy, Kandie; I'm sincerely sorry for your loss.

Miss McKenna gave excellent advice: Our pets really are like family. Please consider talking to your vet and perhaps taking your other bird in for a check-up, just to be safe.

Here's a link(http://www.rainbowbridge.org) to a story about the Rainbow Bridge, which so often helps children through the loss of a beloved pet. I can't help but think that it's helped many adults, too.

Once again, I'm very sorry for your loss.

sorry sweetie, sounds like a rough time lately. even without the loss of your friend and grandma to compound it, it's always painful when a little furry or feathered homey passes. not silly at all. they were your babies and made your home a happy place! i would say please find a buddy for your other baby before he gets too sad! birds are so loving and social and super sensitive to your emotions, wonderful and misunderstood creatures.

if your bird is used to a companion maybe think about getting another one to bond it with? I know it's hard but it would probably make it a little bit less sad for you, as well. Maybe go to a shelter and see if there's a rescue that needs a good home?

hope you feel better. If you need anyone to talk to you can pm me.

I'm so sorry, Kandie; I only read a portion of your original post, and I missed the part where you wrote that your grandmother recently passed away and a friend was killed by a drunk driver.

You have had to bear some heavy burdens recently; please accept my sympathy.

Please accept my condolences in your sorrow.

I'm sorry for everything you've been going through.
This is definitely not a stupid thing to get upset over. I'm a huge animal person, and I know losing a pet can be very tough.
Heck, last year I took in a guinea pig my Dad found abandoned outside. It was skin and bones, so dirty, and crawling with fleas. I only had him a week or so but he seemed like he was doing really well until one day he just died. I was SO upset, I cried and cried. And like I said, this was an animal I hadn't had for very long and didn't even intend on keeping (I wanted to find it a home when it was healthy) and I was still really sad when he died.

I totally understand your pain right now and just want you to know that it's okay to feel whatever you are feeling and it's NOT stupid. Especially given everything else going on in your life.

As far as the surviving bird, try giving it lots of extra attention and love. Losing the other bird is probably stressful for him and he also might become depressed, so some extra attention might help.
Taking him to the vet is a good idea. Birds are good at hiding illnesses and injuries, so the one that died might've been sick for a while without you realizing it.

truly sorry for your loss...... ....

i am sure the same is true for all .... feathered freinds....

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

As someone who has loved and lost pets,... my deepest sympathies go out to you.

Here's a story about dogs, but you can replace the dog with a little bird - its applies just the same:

An old man and his dog were walking down this dirt road with fences on both sides, they came to a gate in the fence and looked in, it was nice - grassy, woody areas, just what a 'huntin' dog and man would like, but, it had a sign saying 'no trespassing' so they walked on. They came to a beautiful gate with a person in white robes standing there. "Welcome to Heaven" he said. The old man was happy and started in with his dog following him.

The gatekeeper stopped him. "Dogs aren't allowed, I'm sorry but he can't come with you." "What kind of Heaven won't allow dogs? If He can't come in, then I will stay out with him. He's been my faithful companion all his life, I can't desert him now. "Suit yourself, but I have to warn you, the Devil's on this road and he'll try to sweet talk you into his area, he'll promise you anything, but, the dog can't go there either. If you won't leave the dog, you'll spend Eternity on this road" So the old man and dog went on.

They came to a rundown fence with a gap in it, no gate, just a hole. Another old man was inside. "Scuse me Sir, my dog and I are getting mighty tired, mind if we come in and sit in the shade for awhile?" "Of course, there's some cold water under that tree over there. Make yourselves comfortable " "You're sure my dog can come in? The man down the road said dogs weren't allowed anywhere." "Would you come in if you had to leave the dog?" " No sir, that's why I didn't go to Heaven, he said the dog couldn't come in. We'll be spending Eternity on this road, and a glass of cold water and some shade would be mighty fine right about now. But, I won't come in if my buddy here can't come too, and that's final. "

The man smiled a big smile and said "Welcome to Heaven." "You mean this is Heaven? Dogs ARE allowed? How come that fellow down the road said they weren't?" "That was the Devil and he gets all the people who are willing to give up a life
long companion for a comfortable place to stay. They soon find out their mistake, but, then it's too late. The dogs come here, the fickle people stay there. GOD wouldn't allow dogs to be banned from Heaven. After all, HE created them to be man's companions in life, why would he separate them in death?"
Women are meant to be loved, not to be understood.

So sorry, KK. It's really like losing a family member. My last kitty that was exclusively mine died about 12 years ago. For ten years I kept dreaming about her, and missed her terribly, even after sharing a cat with my ex-SO for almost 2 years.

Sorry for the little bird's friend too. But I wouldn't be surprised if you and that bird can help each other through this. Take care.

Hello, I am so very sorry for all your losses, it must all be so overwhelming for you. I think they still have the website in-memory-of-pets.com, they have some lovely poems there, includng 'rainbow brige'. I think you can put a memorial for you lil' baby. Here's one of my fav's:

We have a secret you and I,

That no one else shall know,

For who but I can see you lie,

    Each night in fireglow?

And who but I can reach my hand

    Before we go to bed,

And feel the living warmth of you

    And touch your silken head?

And only I walk woodland paths,

    And see ahead of me,

Your small form racing with the wind,

    So young again and free.

And only I can see you swim

    In every brook I pass.

And when I call no one but I

    Can see the bending grass.

I totally understand. My little lovebird passed away suddenly while I was away from home and it was horrible. On top of everything else you're going through, that must be torture. I'm so sorry.

Might want to take the other bird in for a checkup but the way you describe it probably he just got something caught in his throat or something. I'm so sorry for all that you've been going through.

Like everyone said, it's not stupid at all! I am sorry for your loss. Others have given great advice: lots of love for you, grief will take it's own time.

It seems like deaths always happen in 3's for some reason..from my expirience it is true. I am so sorry for your loss..My animals are my best friends and my other children and sisters...i grew up in a household that bread birds..so i know how that is to lose em also. it was just the little ones time to go i guess. The other one will grieve...just give it special attention right now..you might (in time) get a new sister for the bird..after a little while it will help it...again i feel for ya..it's always hard to lose a loved one.
