    Default Illegalising stripping--as feminism?

So stripping has been completely banned in Iceland. The shocking part is the reason: feminism. It is the only country to have such a ban for non-religious reasons.

On one hand, I disagree with the outcome, but I also can see the thorough reasoning behind this. It looks like the main goal is to combat human trafficking. And close behind is the idea that sex is not something to be treated as a commodity.

Ordinarily, I would say this is a backwards sollution--dancing (and likely by extension, human trafficking) would be pushed underground into a dangerous place. No regulation almost always means the worst. But the population of Iceland is smaller than that of most cities, making "underground" almost impossible.

Also, only 10% of the population disagreed with the ban to begin with. Maybe there is just a different social mindset? This is a country with a lesbian for a prime minister, and with over 40% of the parliament female.

I am really interested in your thoughts on this, but please read the article before responding. This is a complicated issue, and it is important to get facts first <3

From what I understand clubs had only been operating in Iceland since 1996 when the first one, Club Odal, opened. Soon more clubs opened and the money there was good since it was still a very novel concept there. Over time the prostitution/trafficking became a major player in the club scene there and I guess led to the shutdown. 15 years is a really short run from grand opening to complete end of industry. It must have gotten really bad.

I think there are some interesting feminist arguments out there, and I'm all for advancement and equal respect for women, BUT i think the feminist point of view of banning stripclubs or strippers is lame.

If I don't have a problem with it, and if I think my body is so pristine and sacred that I want to charge people $$ to see me naked or have me close to them, then why shouldn't i have the right to do that as an independent adult woman? Frankly, it offends me when someone uses the Feminist/anti-objectification card and think that they can tell me how I should live my life.

They want to take away MY right AS A WOMAN to choose this as an occupation! i think that's pretty intrusive and, i dunno, patriarchal.

i mean EXCUSE ME, but I'm minding my own business and making a living, and I'm not telling YOU what kind of slave you are and how the entire systemic branch that YOU'RE a part of should disappear.

I always wanted to know why the so called feminists want to make everyone believe that working in the adult industry is something degrading. I honestly think is because they're ugly.

Frankly, I find it pretty fucking insulting, too!

Thankfully, there are sex-positive feminists out there who believe that sexual freedom goes hand-in-hand with the overall freedom of women. Where I work -- and I think this is the case in many American strip clubs -- if anyone is being exploited, it sure isn't the women.

As for Iceland's strip club ban, while sex trafficking is awful, it seems unfair and heavy-handed to shut down an entire industry rather than simply tightening restrictions or going after the bad apples.

depends how far you take your feminism. stripping gave me a big head about women having the power. so we have the power, we control the circumstances and the men and if we play our cards right, we are able to leave on a high note [before a situation gets abusive, degrading etc feminist nightmare]. by imposing such restrictions on women to flaunt their sexual freedom and power over men it seems as though they are aiming for an opposite effect contradicting the whole thing.
