Holy shit! I'm on CNN and this village is being swept away! Freakin' 8.9??? I never heard of a quake that big! I think Chile was a 7. Now they're talking about a tsunami being possible. One has hit in northern Japan. A ten meter high swell, 39 FEET! Holy crap!![]()

I think the tsunami already hit. The airport is under water.
I think they said they are waiting for another wave though.
Oil refinery set on fire!
Praying for them.

They said they have suspended all public transport in Tokyo and told people they have to walk.
That's a big freaking city to have to walk through, especially after an 8.9 earthquake.

Holy shit. This happened yesterday? And I'm only just now learning about it on SW?
I feel so out-of-contact with the normal world.
How terrible. That's a big quake. I'd imagine the damage is huge. Keeping them in my thoughts as well.

Tsunami sirens going off in Hawaii.
I can't watch anymore. These people are running from the water and trying to escape in their cars and just being swept away.![]()

Yesterday as in a few hours ago.

Japanese yen falling...

^ Of course.
Watching on the news now. Pretty friggin' terrible. It's the tsunami that's scary...the water moves so fast, no one could outrun it.
The aftershocks are 5.0. That's an earthquake in itself....

Tsunami on the way to our west coast...hopefully not near as bad...

We just had the Emergency Broadcast Signal issue a tsunami warning to coastal counties of central California. Although we are not technically coastal, our river connects us to the S.F. bay. It's expected to arrive at the mouth of the bay at 8:08 am.

Oh no Tofino and Langara! Oh my poor sweet BC! I woke up from strange dreams, decided to check twitter because I couldn't sleep and suddenly the world was ending, AGAIN! japan declared a nuclear emergency. What the HELL Mother Nature!? My heart goes out to everyone!

holy shit
im just hearing about this![]()

The surge is hitting the Santa Cruz harbor pretty hard as I type.

Sooo now there are tremors at Yellowstone...ugh
Let's hope not...

I remember back in 1993 I lived in Guam and they had an 8.2 earthquake.. scariest thing ever!! It sounded like a freight train!! I remember trying to walk through the house to get outside and it was like walking through one of those funhouses that rock back and forth. I also remember the fridge sliding toward me as I was going through the kitchen to get outside. All night there was tremors.. I think the biggest one being 5.5, and all you're thinking is that another earthquake was happening. Very frightening for a 10 year old :/

The Big Picture (from the Boston Globe) has some amazing & terrifying images from Japan. They really are amazing photos:

When life gives you lemons, make lemonade... then find someone whose life gave them vodka, and have a party.
I live on the Oregon coast and my daughter abd I had to evacuate this morning at 4AM. It was terrifying to imagine us being in the path of this potential destruction. I feel such sadness for Japan. This is a serious state of emergency.

Crazy! Seeing those clips, it looks like something you'd see in a movie.
I wonder how many years will it take for that country to recuperate everything. Jees.
That's also one of the countries I fantasized about visiting.

GPS stations in Japan are indicating that the entire island MOVED about 8 feet. Also, early satellite data is showing that the earth's axis was shifted a few inches !!! This was a MAJOR quake !
There is also a bunch of 'gray' news regarding the existance of radiation leaks from a Japanese nuclear reactor, the total 'disappearance' of Bullet Trains etc.
(snip)"IWAKI, Japan (AP) -- An explosion at a nuclear power station Saturday destroyed a building housing the reactor amid fears that it was close to a disastrous meltdown after being hit by a powerful earthquake and tsunami.
Friday's double disaster, which pulverized Japan's northeastern coast, has left 574 people dead by official count, although local media reports said at least 1,300 people may have been killed.
Tokyo Power Electric Co., the utility that runs the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant, said four workers had suffered fractures and bruises and were being treated at a hospital. A nuclear expert said a meltdown may not pose widespread danger.
Footage on Japanese TV showed that the walls of the reactor's building had crumbled, leaving only a skeletal metal frame standing. Puffs of smoke were spewing out of the plant in Fukushima, 20 miles (30 kilometers) from Iwaki.
"We are now trying to analyze what is behind the explosion," said government spokesman Yukio Edano, stressing that people should quickly evacuate a six-mile (10-kilometer) radius. "We ask everyone to take action to secure safety."
The trouble began at the plant's Unit 1 after the massive 8.9-magnitude earthquake and the tsunami it spawned knocked out power there. According to official figures, 586 people are missing and 1,105 injured. In addition, police said between 200 and 300 bodies were found along the coast in Sendai, the biggest city in the area near the quake's epicenter.
The true scale of the destruction was still not known more than 24 hours after the quake since washed-out roads and shut airports have hindered access to the area. An untold number of bodies were believed to be buried in the rubble and debris.
In another disturbing development that could substantially raise the death toll, Kyodo news agency said rail operators lost contact with four trains running on coastal lines on Friday and still had not found them by Saturday afternoon.
East Japan Railway Co. said it did not know how many people were aboard the trains.
Adding to worries was the fate of nuclear power plants. Japan has declared states of emergency for five nuclear reactors at two power plants after the units lost cooling ability.
The most troubled one, Fukushima Dai-ichi, is facing meltdown, officials have said.
A "meltdown" is not a technical term. Rather, it is an informal way of referring to a very serious collapse of a power plant's systems and its ability to manage temperatures. It is not immediately clear if a meltdown would cause serious radiation risk, and if it did how far the risk would extend.
Yaroslov Shtrombakh, a Russian nuclear expert, said a Chernobyl-style meltdown was unlikely.
"It's not a fast reaction like at Chernobyl," he said. "I think that everything will be contained within the grounds, and there will be no big catastrophe."
In 1986, the Chernobyl nuclear reactor exploded and caught fire, sending a cloud of radiation over much of Europe.
Pressure has been building up in Fukushima reactor - it's now twice the normal level - and Japan's Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency told reporters Saturday that the plant was venting "radioactive vapors." Officials said they were measuring radiation levels in the area. Wind in the region is weak and headed northeast, out to sea, according to the Meteorological Agency.
The reactor in trouble has already leaked some radiation: Operators have detected eight times the normal radiation levels outside the facility and 1,000 times normal inside Unit 1's control room.
Ryohei Shiomi, a nuclear official, said that each hour the plant was releasing the amount of radiation a person normal absorbs in a year.
He has said that even if there were a meltdown, it wouldn't affect people outside a six-mile (10-kilometer) radius - an assertion that might need revising if the situation deteriorates. Most of the 51,000 residents living within the danger area had been evacuated, he said."(snip)

There are also a handful of 'tin foil hat' analysts who dared to mention that the recent quake in New Zealand and this latest quake in Japan may be connected ... via the 'ring of fire' fault line. Thus it's possible that more quakes along this same fault line may soon occur.

i hate hate hate hearing about stuff like this. It's horrible. It's just been one disaster after another for the last few years, and it's freaking me out. I hope the japanese government is helping these people out. such a damn shamesad sad sad.

^^^ well, if I'm reading between the news lines correctly, so far the Japanese gov't is refusing US and other foreign offers of help ... in order to save 'face'. This includes an offer for the US military to supply and transport by cargo chopper additional nuclear reactor coolant from the USS Ronald Reagan ( which is located just off Japan's coast ) to help stop the Fukushima reactor from melting down.

^^. WOW. if something like that happened in my country,I'd swollow my pride and get as much help as I can. It's not about "saving face" it's about helping your people, getting them the help and support that they NEED. Jesus Christ.
