Default Getting married for health insurance

So my health insurance is going up and I can't afford it anymore. I was planning on joining the ranks of the uninsured again and just paying more for my prescriptions and hoping I don't fall off the stage at work. My boyfriend came up to me the other day at his work (I'd come in to have lunch with him) and said,

"If we get married before April I could put you on my health insurance and it would cost half of what you're paying now with more benefits."

We've been dating for 5 years now and we've mumbled about "getting married some day" so it wasn't totally unexpected....It was so practical and so "hi we're having lunch and POW!" that I thought he was joking at first.

I mean, of course I said yes and I called both our parents and my sisters and told them he proposed. We're planning on having a celebration and a ceremony at my church later so I'm just telling folks we're engaged.

I guess I'm still just reeling. Ohmagawd, what am I DOING?! Am I really getting married at a courthouse so that I can continue health insurance?!

You guys have been together long enough. I have a few questions:

    1. Have you ever been married?
    2. Do you feel like you're ready to get married?
    3. Can you see yourself spending the rest of your life with him?
    4. What is the biggest thing scaring you about marrying him?

I think being scared is normal especially the first time you get married. Maybe you could talk with some of your married friends and family that you trust to help put your mind at ease.

Neither of us have been. He's 43 and I'm 29.

    2. Do you feel like you're ready to get married?
Sometimes I feel more like I'm tired of dating than ready to get married. Which, I kinda think is why a lot of people get married. I wouldn't say I'm not ready but I'd say it hadn't really occurred to me that I would actually get married though I think about it a lot.

    3. Can you see yourself spending the rest of your life with him?
I think he is a great person to be a long term partner. He would always be there for me and stand by me and help me however he could.

    4. What is the biggest thing scaring you about marrying him?
We work but we shouldn't. I'm ignoring all the good things b/c this is about "what's scaring you" not, "what's great", there's a lot of great. But the scary thing is that when I tell ppl I'm dating him they say, "HIM?! I'd never have thought the two of you!" Idealy I'd be w/ like, a bi, adventurous, artist-type. He's straight, kinda uptight, staid. It's like buying a car that has no hoses but still runs.

Maybe you could talk with some of your married friends and family that you trust to help put your mind at ease.
    That's good advice! Thanks!

Maybe a little more time to be sure of your choice.

If you like him, then who cares what anyone else thinks? Also- if he's kinda like a busted car, then why have you been with him for five years? He must be pretty awesome for you to want to be with him that long... if he isn't what you want, then why stick around?

Congrats. Sounds like a good idea esp since you guys approached the topic before any of this health ins and since you've been together so long. Sounds like the best decision and the health Ins stuff is an extra fringe benefit. Good luck

I'm the opposite to my husband, but we compliment each other and each have our own thing to bring to the relationship. He was my childhood sweetheart and we've been married 24 years.Hasn't always been bliss but we have stuck at it.
Sounds like the marriage is not a hasty or silly idea at all. I'm sure the two of you will have many more years of creating memories together.

I'm in pretty much the exact same situation as you, Isobel. Very long-term relationship, solid, living together, et cetera. Part of me is still pretty resolute about not wanting to get married until everyone has the right to do so, but another part of me doesn't exactly relish the thought of paying full-price for my anti-depressants next year after I leave my current (vanilla) job. Ah shucks.

She wonders how much he'd pay to see her innards, what it is guys think girls are hiding so that they always want to see them in every place.
