    Dizzy (Help) Thyroid Issues...

Hey guys, I just wanted to know if anyone on here knows (or is their self) someone who has HYPERthyroidism or HYPOthyroidism.

If so, could you help me out with some treatment methods, things that you have done? Is it possible to lose weight when you are Hypo?

I know that there may not be doctors on here (or maybe there could be =)...but right now I have no choice but to get my health care from the VA (Veterans Hospital) and let's just say, they don't give a shit...they are very standoffish and to make an appointment to get to see someone to see you...is like pulling a tooth out.
It is such a shame to be a veteran and be treated this way!!!

Basically my issue is that I was Hyper and was put on meds for about 4 months and the meds were so strong that it turned me Hypo...and I am gaining weight like crazy....Any ideas, advice, stories...whatever you can help me with is appreciated...Thanks!!

Take a moment to analyze your eating habits. Is it possible you've been getting away with slacking in that area in the past... and now that you're receiving treatment, things are evening out metabolism-wise and you just need to make some adjustments to what you eat?
It seems pretty common that people with hyperthyroidism gain weight if they continue with old habits.

Personally, it was recently recommended to me that I check out myself out for hypo... and lucky me! I has it. No real reports on how any meds/anything they may put me on turn out... Weight-wise than it's a lot harder for me to lose 5-10 pounds than it seems to be for anyone else. I also have to watch what I eat a lot more closely than most people I know because I'll pork right up 10 pounds in no time otherwise, lol.
That's not really a big deal... the other side effects are MUCH more difficult to deal with than watching what I eat.

Whoever it was who put you on the medication should be testing your levels periodically to make sure that they have the correct dose. That is the standard of care, and if they are not doing so it is one of the grounds for malpractice (whether or not you are actually able to bring a suit against them for it).

I have HYPO, and when I first when on the levothyroxin, they tested me every three months for 6 months, and when I leveled out, now it's once a year that I get tested or something like that.

But like Desuvas, I still have to watch what I eat and work out a lot to lose weight, and be careful so I don't gain weight. It sucks, but the other side effects would be a lot worse. I've been there and it sucks.

On the flip side, my sis is HYPER, and went on meds for it, and started to gain weight because she ate as tho she wasn't on the meds. As soon as she hit a healthy weight, she had to start eating like a more average person to stop the gain, and it was a bit of a shock to her.

But other than meds, I don't know what else you can do. I've always had Tricare, and always had access to medication and doctors, so never had to do the no-medication thing.

Oh I wish I could sue. I have my levels checked. The medication was so strong that it reversed the Hyper to Hypo. Now they want to wait a little over a month without medication to see what my levels do...I can tell you this though, I feel like crap! Urgh.

Oh yes, Tricare is wonderful...I don't have it anymore however...but I will see what is going on when I do the blood work in a few weeks...I don't want to get it taken out or do iodine or anything...they just don't explain things to you there.
I agree with you about eating right! It is so important and I have gotten off my junk food binge and I am back to some serious veggies, fruits, whole grains and lean meats...I am also working out again a few times a week. Working through the fatigue is daunting...lol...

But thanks so much for sharing guys!

Ahh yes... Glorious Tricare! How I miss it!

The fatigue is one of the worst parts. It's one of the reasons I work out as often as I do (a few times a day)... because that's the only thing that keeps me from sleeping 12 hours a day.

Well, that's good to see. It would really be a travesty if they weren't doing the proper followup.

You'll feel better once your thyroid levels get back to normal. There is lag of a few weeks between changes in medication and changes in the thyroid hormones. The lag can make it hard to the dose right, particularly for those who don't understand the concept well (which a surprising number of docs do not).

God, I know it! Sometimes, getting out of bed or out of my house TO work out, even knowing it helps, is just soooo hard. And Every afternoon, around 4-5 pm, I get so tired too...all I want to do is nap, and that's when I have to start getting ready for work and eat dinner etc, since I have to be at work by 8pm. Ugh. I hate my thyroid.

I am technically hypo, but actually I don't have a thyroid at all. It was removed when I was a teen. Anywho, I've gained weight, but now that I've got my correct medication, it's really easy to maintain. You really should get an doctor specializing in endocrinology. Your thyroid effects so much of your body that getting the best your city has to offer is worth every penny. Luckily for me I have insurance, I don't know what you have, but it really is worth every penny. Your thyroid levels will effect everything from fatigue to metabolism, to just plan ol' mood. One time I was off my medication for two weeks and I had a melt down at an IHOP because I couldn't decide what to order. If you work out, you may have to work out a little more if you're hypo. Hypothyroidism is really easy to gain weight. Hypo you might lose too much, in a negative way. It sucks. Get the best doctor you can, get your medication at the right level. The best part about the whole doctor thing is when you get your medication levels perfected, you shouldn't have to see your doctor more than once a year or so. They don't change much unless you go through puberty, have a kid, or enter menopause. : )
Oh and don't take generic brand thryoid pills. Get off levothyroxine, and onto something like synthroid. It's pricier, but it has a higher percentage of the actual hormone, and will take less to get you to a better place. Generic thyroid pills don't have to have more than something like 30% of the actual hormone in it! So what you get isn't what you need. That's directly from my doctor. I can't stress that enough.
