Default BA on Monday, Health Concerns!!!

I've been out of the country and just got back last night, I hadn't slept in 36 hours, and finally passed out at three am. I woke up to do my blood work to fax to the doctor, I HAD to do it today since my surgery is on Monday. Well, I found a lab and went, I rolled out of bed half asleep.

When they started to take the blood, I felt myself getting the fainting feeling. I have a history of fainting spells throughout my life, and I know that feeling so well. I told the guy to hurry up because I feel like I'm going to faint! He was like, "Just take a deep breath, you're just nervous"..... No motherfcker, I'm not nervous at all! I injected myself with Melanotan for goddsake! I really was just getting that physical feeling!

Next thing I know, I wake up with men all around me gasping for air from the ammonia they put under my nose. I could hardly see anything for about five minutes, and I heard them say, "call 911"

Next thing I know, there's an ambulance and paramedics taking my blood pressure. The first guy couldn't get it because it was so low, so the second guy finally got it, it was 80/42. My pulse was 48, my blood glucose was normal at 112. They told me I need to go to the hospital, but now I felt fine, so I signed a refusal and just went home because I was soooo tired and just wanted to sleep.

Now I'm scared to even get my surgery! The nurse said it was a vaso vagal response, but I don't think so..... I wasn't nervous or scared. What scares me is that this wasn't a typical fainting spell. I really felt like I died and stopped breathing and came back to life. Also, the paramedics asked me if I run a lot or work out a lot, which I do, and they said I'm not getting enough calories, and that we burn through protein so fast..... I don't know how true that is though

Anyone have any thoughts or advice for me? The bitch nurse at the doctor's office wasn't helping at all! She has been nothing but rude to me this entire time!

You can say that again.. not just on here but men in general. Guys are so damn lame, the only way they can halfway make up for it is by opening their wallets.

I had something similar happen to me once... It's the only time I've ever passed out, so I'm not sure what the usual feeling is like... but this was preceded by dizziness and feeling week... then swimming vision... then the black out. I had super low blood pressure as well.
I actually went to the hospital and it was dismissed eventually dismissed after testing as nothing and I probably just needed to eat/get some fluids and that's what caused it.
There weren't any lingering side effects and it hasn't happened in the... 5 years since.

Oh dear! So sorry that would be scary! All I know is the protein thing is true. We actually metabolise protein more effectively than sugar; however, prolonged high levels of protein consumption can cause an accumulation of ketone bodies and ketoacidosis which can cause major health issues. But I think usually blood sugar levels in this case would be very high. Low BP can have to do with diabetes though and certainly ketone bodies can cause diabetic acidosis.

Is there any medications you have taken that could be at fault?

Did they get the blood sample they needed? Im sure if there was anything really dangerous the PS will not proceed with surgery. Also I would tell the PS and anaesthesiologist about the incident. If they think there is a big risk they might postpone the surgery. Or if they go ahead at least they know what they need to be monitoring.

Try and get as much sleep as possible and fluids over the weekend. I would probably hold off on exercise and maybe increase your calorie intake and add a bit more carbohydrate just to get your body strong for monday.

The good news is generally low blood pressure is not that dangerous. Your body faints so that the blood can circulate more effectively to your heart and then you wake up once it is back to acceptable levels. Versus high blood pressure which can cause you to stroke. Of course if there is an underlying cause you will want to find out what it is, but if you blood tests come back all normal Im sure it was just a freak thing.

I have a vaso vagal response pretty much EVERY time I get blood drawn or a shot. I suck with needles...

For me, I start feeling kinda dizzy, then like I can't breathe a little bit, light-headed. Then vision starts to go, and next thing I know Im waking up with a nurse in my face. I warn them, too, but the nurses and them don't seem to take me seriously. My blood pressure drops really low, and I don't have low blood sugar because I try and eat beforehand since I've heard it helps (not me though).

The blood work prior to my BA, I went in and fainted. They still got what they needed, and nothing was amiss. The doctors went ahead with the surgery, but my reaction to the anesthesia was not good. It didn't get out of my system fast enough for them to get me out of the recovery room, so I ended up going home still partway with anesthesia in my system. So I was out of it for like DAYS, and on top of that when i was awake and "aware", it felt like I was still sleeping...IDK, it was weird and I can't remember that well. I live off stories my husband tells me from caring for me.

on a side note, A couple times, during the fainting spell, I have wierd dreams/visions, and I'd swear they were true too, but then reality hits and it's not true at all. Kinda a matrix-y feeling.

I'm glad you're ok. Re what the paramedics said to you - I was told the same thing by my doctor. I have low blood pressure and low resting heart rate, and I also work out a lot. When I recover from my surgeries now I make sure that I'm eating at regular intervals (so my blood sugar doesn't go too low) and my surgeon recommended I up my salt intake due to low blood pressure/feeling faint.
I once took a hot shower a few days after my first surgery and felt so dizzy and faint, I had to call my boyfriend in to help. But since my other surgeries I have been eating throughout the recovery (esp for the first few days) with sugary and salty foods and I haven't had a problem since.
