How about marketing, consulting or customer service? I would probably avoid website designer or e-commerce business - someone may get curious and ask to see your work or merchandise.![]()

I told my parents I moderate an adult website. Kinda true aha

I told them I work for an adult website, moderating the chats and ensuring that girls don't get harassed in their free chat. I didn't mention an exact amount, but said it's more than my last job, which was $11 an hour.

I'm posting an article I wrote for a cam girl site I used to have about this. Sorry, I didn't have time to read all the posts, so some may be repeated.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The money you’ll earn working on web cam can be great, and it’s very likely that you may consider quitting your day job after a while. How will you explain to all of those inquiring minds in your life exactly how you make money staying home all day?
Tell them to mind their own damned business. Just kidding. I assume that if you are asking yourself this question, then you have some concerns about your family or friends judging you. Or perhaps, you will tell those close to you, but you don’t want associates or people you just meet to be all up in your business. It’s true that many people wouldn’t understand about your new sexy career, so let me offer you some tips on handling this question.
Option 1: Tell the truth. Be prepared for any number of negative responses such as, being called a slut, being told it’s wrong, a sin, dangerous, and the list goes on. As long as you are comfortable with what you do and secure in who you are--never forget that who you are doesn’t change no matter what you do for a living--comments from critics are irrelevant. If you simply don’t want to be bothered with negative feedback, it’s time to use option 2.
Option 2: Here’s how a typical conversation goes when someone I don’t want to tell asks me what I do...
Them: So, what do you do?
Me: I do online customer service from home.
Them: What?
Me: It’s easy, it’s just like a customer service job with a regular company, except I can do it from home on the computer.
Them: For what company?/How does that work?
Me: I freelance for different ones. Some pay by check, some pay by paypal. You can check out a few places online such as, workingsol.com, liveperson.net, westathome.com. WAHM.com is a great resource to use if you’re looking for more info on how work from home. WAHM stands for work at home moms.
I like to close out with the wahm.com plug, because it proves to them that there is an entire community of people who are working legitimately from home, plus it kind of wraps up the conversation. If they keep asking, I get some paper and write the sites down for them; this implies nicely that they need to do their own homework. Notice how I worded things so I wasn’t exactly lying, LOL. What we do is a form of customer service.
Also, you can say you do voice over work at Voices.com or freelance writing for DemandStudios.com; depending on what's more believable based on your personality and skills.
Keep your answers to the point and sound confident. Remember, the information you’re giving them is true. All of the companies mentioned above offer real work from home jobs. Unless someone is very interested, they won’t normally drill you with questions. If they ask something like “can you get me hired in” just let them know (and this is actually true) that they have to apply online and those sorts of companies don’t take referrals. Just give them the website names.
I do a bit of both options. With my old fashioned grandparents, it’s door #2. With my friends its #1. With strangers, I play by ear.
I always find it funny when people who are okay with strip clubs have a problem with webcam girls. In a strip club you’re almost always going to be touched by guys and you have to be there with them in person. I’ll take a cam show with some kinky guy who won’t even know what state I live in over a lap dance for some creep who pinches my ass and could follow me home any day. Nothing against stripping, I'm just saying I don't get why some people think webcam work is somehow worse.
Bottom line, to tell or not to tell, it’s a question only you can answer. Sometimes people may surprise you with their ignorance -- and sometimes with their open-mindedness.
