    Duh What would you do?

Has anyone on here gone to college and graduated in their late 20's to early 30's and beyond?

I just turned 30 and I have about 4 more classes to graduate. I was suppose to graduate this summer, but because of ONE Math class, that I am failing, I might have to wait a whole other year to graduate, so I will be 31 instead. This just bothers me! I chose the military from 18-26 and then college.

Have any of you got a degree later in life? I just feel so depressed, the Math professor is such a bitch too...I mean I start seeing these formulas and my mind goes BLANK...the professor is NO help either. She is one of those "I have mines, you get yours" types.

So basically what I am saying is, I am in a state (as in location, I am not from the state that I go to school in) that I HATE and was gonna move from, but now I have to stay here a whole other year because I am failing Math (too late to catch up) and Math is a prerequisite for a few other classes I have to take.

What would you guys do? Anyone ever been through this? My age is bothering me too...I am just mad at myself. School had been important to me and with other things going on, this just seems to be making more upset than it usually would.

    Thanks for listening!

First, is there truly is no hope of passing this class? Even with tutors? If not, then can you withdraw or take an incomplete rather than the F?

Second, is this class offered in the summer either at your school or another college? You should look into this. Even if it is not offered at your school in the summer, you may be able to transfer it in from another school. When I went to school a lot of people did this as a way to accelerate graduation. Either way, you could at least shoot for a January graduation rather than waiting until May of next year.

    Anyway, good luck!

This is why I feel so devastated. They are actually not offering the Math Class for the summer. I spoke to her and she said it was "unlikely" that I will pass since we have only 2 more exams left and the semester is over.
It is too late to drop the class without receiving a withdrawl-fail grade, which would be similar to an "F". I wish I could graduate in January, but because of the TWO classes needed after this math class, It would be next August, or possibly May. This just sucks.

    Thanks for listening!

I would look for a tutor. I can sympathize because I was a little older than my classmates when I graduated. I had finished three years of college in my early 20's then decided for awhile to do other things instead of paying to go to school. I continued to dance and work in radio, and started a bachelor party business. However a few years later I realized I may need that diploma so I went back and finished the last year I needed. Ironically, I had to take a math class and I struggled. Luckily I had a great teacher who worked with me.

How old will you be in a year if you don't graduate?

I get your "point". I have plans, and that is why this is bothering me. This is why I asked for other people's opinion, not sarcasm.

My dad didn't get his first degree until after he was retired (20 years in the military)... so don't feel self-conscious that you didn't finish school in your early 20's. There ARE successful people who didn't go to school til they were older.

If it's only "unlikely" that you won't pass... that means there's a chance and you should do everything you can to try. Stick with Kourtney's advice there. If you wind up failing anyway... at least you tried your best and you can spend the extra year making sure you've got everything g2g for when you DO graduate.

don't feel bad about being older and in school. when I was going to community college there were a ton of people in my class who were a LOT older and idk about everyone else but I thought it was wicked cool. they seemed very devoted and serious about the classes. I always liked doing group projects with the older students because they didn't come to school to fuck around.

I've only started working part time ln a diploma last year at the ripe old age of 44! It's taken me that long to find time between work and raising kids to get the education I always wanted. One of the classes I did last year i really didn't understand, the teacher was useless when I asked for help and I was certain I was going to fail and almost gave that class up. I then decided to do the best I possibly could because if the worst happened and I failed I would know what to expect and have all my notes (with corrections to where I went wrong) and would be a certain to pass it second time around. The other thing was because I didn't understand the class and didn't like the teacher I figured even a slim chance of scraping through was better than the certainty of having to repeat it all again. Lucky I did keep at it because i surprised myself by passing, and with a fairly good mark.

Why does age matter? Finishing a degree at any age is an accomplishment you will be proud of. Ill be 32 when I graduate Vet. My dad is talking about going to university now since he's retired. Education is something you should be proud of and I dont buy into this whole "its not economical" stuff. Who cares? Using your brain has more rewards than financial. So your gonna fail something. I failed a class for the first time last year. I got 35% higher the second time around. Somethings just take more than one try. Dont take it too hard. I think a tutor is a good idea. I know how frustrating it is when you hate a class and have to keep pushing through... but eventually you'll finish it and that's gonna feel awesome.

Graduating college is a great accomplishment. Congratulations in advance!

The easiest time to do this is when you are just out of high school. You are used to school, most dont yet have full adult responsibilities...

So not only are you graduating college, you are doing it in a difficult manner...AND you have served your country....You should be VERY proud of yourself....

Your diploma wont say what age you were when you did it. An employer would be more impressed with your story than some 22-23 yr old with the same degree.

.....and think how proud of yourself you will be if you can somehow buckle down(get a tutor or other help) and pass that math class.

    good luck

I had a similar problem. I was taking a statistics class (a pre-req for a lot of education classes), and I had little hope of passing. At the half-way point, I got a tutor and started going to the stats class right before mine. So in essence, I was double dipping classes. I had to get permission from the professor, but otherwise it was ok. I ended up passing, thanks to hard work. Maybe you can do something similar?

Wow, sorry to hear that. There was one part of my post that I did not see an answer to though: Can you take this as a summer class at another school and transfer it back in? When I went to school the university would allow us to transfer in 100 and 200 level classes taken at another school over the summer, particularly when the university was not offering the class itself during the summer.

Now this class could be too advanced, or you may be required to retake it at your school because of the fail, or there may be other rules that prevent this, but I just thought that I'd ask.

Can you take this class(that you arent passing) at the local community college over the summer and have the credit transfer to your school?
