(only very mild movie ruining references)
Went with the man to the midnight premiere of Sucker Punch in our area. Great preview, although I wasn't keen on the cliched use of the line "If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything," though I thought the actor for that was perfect.
Without ruining it for others, I would say that I'm disappointed in pretty much the zero character depth, and how they seemed to count on the fan boy wet dream appeal, without really following through with any "punch" except for the costuming.
I wasn't as troubled by the layers of reality as my boyfriend was, and found it similar to Inception, though not nearly as hard to follow. Did I think the lead in and the voice over at the end were a little hallmark-ish and vapid? Sure.
I had to laugh a little that it did seem to be a story that most guys wouldn't enjoy that much because really, the fears of rape in the beginning and at the home wouldn't hit home for guys as much, that fear that we're really only allowed a certain amount of control and no more (like in the case of Madam Gorsky), these aspects of the story that probably offered the most nuances...I don't think a lot of the fan boy groups would get that, and so for them, the action sequences and a few of the lines worked, but not much else.
For the women, we get to eye the costumes (especially appropriate for our crowd), have our hearts in our throat when we think first the heroine and then her sister are going to get raped, and to get that feeling of girl power.
Though-- as I overheard one little fanboy moan afterward in the parking lot: "I wish I could at LEAST have seen her dance!!"
That made me laugh.
I wouldn't watch the movie again except to freeze certain sections to piece together hairstyles and costumes for myself. I wonder what the reception was like in Japan (or will be when it's released there) since this schoolgirl-with-a-side-of-potential-rape seems to be right up their taboo alley.
