Default Help me Pick a Birth Control Pill?

Soooooo my boyfriend really really wants me to go on the pill. I tried it once for 6 weeks last year and hated it, it made it impossible for me to stick to a diet & excersise regime due to making me crave a looooot of sugar and carbs and also zapping all my energy, and thus I would say it was indirectly responsible for the 7 lbs I gained in those 6 weeks. Which is why I stopped it after 6 weeks. It also made me crazy emotional and moody. I was on Alesse.

If you ladies could help me pick a pill that is right for me by sharing your stories, in particular, any recomendations you have for certain pills and why, I would greatly appreciate it!

Here's some info about me that is important in the decision:
-I have huge trouble with my weight. I have always been big--big frame, muscular, gain/hold onto weight easily, have a very hard time losing it even with a good diet and cardio routine. Last summer it took me a solid 4 months of dieting just to lose 15 pounds. I DO NOT need a pill that is going to be another thing working against me on this.
-My boobs are already a full DD/E. I do not want or need them to get any bigger thank you
-I have no skin/acne issues, never have. Just saying because "it helped clear my skin up" as a positive effect of a pill doesn't really have any bearing for me
-Potential moodiness, though it was a problem for me on Alesse, is a secondary issue to the weight gain/lethargic side effects that I noticed, I'd rather be on a pill that won't make me gain/won't make it difficult to lose weight even if it has moodiness side effects.

So far, I've read multiple claims that Seasonale, and Tri-Levlen are potential good ones for me, I've read both really good and really terrible things about Yaz/Yasmin. If anyone has personal experience with any of those brands I would love to hear it!

Unfortunately, I think you really have to try several to see which one works best for you. I personally really like Yaz/Yasmin (I've been on both), but I know a lot of other girls don't care for it. Although I'm with you on not liking Alesse. I was on Lutera (same thing) and really didn't like it. Try pills that contain different combinations / levels of each hormone until you find one that works well for you. Keep in mind though that you typically need to allow 3 months or so to adjust to a new pill before deciding if you like it. Hope you find one that works for you!

I was on Tri-Cyclen Lo and hated it. Made me crazy and it was inconvenient to skip periods. For what it's worth, it also made me break out a lot and I normally have good skin. Next was Yaz. Fucking hated it. Made me really moody and I'd cry about a lot of things when I'm not normally a crier. Now I'm on Marvelon and I really like it. My doctor had a little chart that had the amount of estrogen and progestin in each brand on a scale, along with possible negative effects. So, since I was super hormonal on Yaz, she wanted me to have less estrogen but more progestin (I think, I honestly don't remember though) and Marvelon fit the bill. I really like it. No problems, no moodiness, no crying, no spotting. Works for me!

A friend was on Seasonale and while she liked the lack of periods (you can skip with any brand though, though it is more difficult with the tri-phasic ones like Tri-Cyclen) but it made her break out a lot and she said she got pretty crazy.

Honestly, birth control is one of those things that varies so much on your body that just because it's good for one person, doesn't mean it'll be good for you. You also need to give your body 3 months on the pill to know what it'll be like for you - it takes a while for your body to get used to it and the hormones to get all regulated. Go to your doctor with that list and hopefully they will also have that handy chart that my doctor had. Ask for sample packs too - save yourself some money.

Would you ever consider something like a Paraguard or Mirena (IUDs)? They're really simple, who can get them with or without hormones, and it lets you NOT take a BCP every day.

I have a Paraguard and love it.

I couldn't tolerate ANY birth control until I got on Micronor, a.k.a. "the mini-pill." I'm very sensitive to hormonal change, & this was the only thing that didn't make me feel like hurling 24/7.

Thanks for the responses guys! I actually have seriously thought about getting an copper IUD like paraguard, but...and this is going to sound SO wimpy...I'm absolutely terrified of the insertion/removal process and the "strings" hanging down, it getting lodged in my uterus or falling out, etc. I haven't had any kids, and I've only been for one gynecological exam and I remember the doc having a pretty difficult time getting up there for the pap smear even with the smallest clamp thingy (sorry if that's tmi). I'm just worred that if there was problems with that how are they going to get something bigger up there? I've also heard that there's lots of women who get very bad cramps with IUDs, mine are pretty bad already so much so that often I can't do a lot on the 1st day of my period. I dunno, I definitely could see myself having the balls to get an IUD after I have kids but right now they freak me right out!

I was on Seasonale, it was ok but I still spotted in between periods. I have a mood disorder, and it didn't affect me as much as other pills in that department. I didn't gain a ton of weight either, and what little I did was mostly water which I took care of by drinking lots of lemon-water and taking a diuretic every now and again.

Thanks for that article! I think I'm going to do some more research on Yasmin and Yaz it sounds like it might work for me.

I have a really small vaginal canal and opening (no kids/biological) and I work as an escort, so I definitely hear you about the strings. The insertion process was pretty easy - I usually have heavy cramps and these were like half of what I was used to. The really irritating thing was that while the IUD was settling (~48h) I had random spouts of cramping - nothing-SOMETHING-nothing again. I can only feel the strings if I really dig for them, they're soft and quite thin.

IMHO totally worth it for hormone-free birth control and not as scary as it seemed. Its relatively cheap, easy, pain is controlled AND you don't have to remember something every day. No moods swings no little plastic pill packs no worrying about hormone levels... I'm really surprised this isn't used more often.

My partner is going in a month to have the Mirena inserted (she needs the hormones for a little facial balancing, she breaks out less), I'll let you know how that goes.

Every time I have been on any of the Ortho products, I've had massive weight gain, serious mood swings, very regular yeast infections, and absolutely no sex drive. Ortho Tri Cyclen, Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo, and the Ortho Evra patch all seriously fucked with me.

I switched back to Yaz two months ago, and I'm losing the weight, not nearly as moody, and my sex drive has come back. My doctor explained to me that all the Ortho products use a specific hormone (I think it's called norgestimate) that has a lot of side effects with a lot of women. She said Ortho is the only one that uses this hormone, and sure enough, Yaz isn't giving me any of those problems.

My ultimate goal is to get the IUD and be done with birth control forever. But in the meanwhile, Yaz certainly doesn't give me any issues.

^Cool! Yeah I think I am going to try to get a prescription for Yaz, it has a slightly lower dose of estrogen than Yasmin, I've heard nasty things about Ortho tri-cyclen too!!! And many reports of increased boobie size so I already blacklisted it The only thing that worries me about Yaz is all the lawsuits for all these horrible side effects some women have experienced, however I've read things like that for other brands too.

I've got a Paragard, and it's AMAZING. No hormones, ten years, you can take it out any time you like. A lot of people say you have to have already had a kid to get one, but I have no children and got mine at 21 (I'm 28 now).

That being said, try Ortho-Novum, and/or Mircette. Both of them are good.

If you actually read through the detailed possible risks/side effects of hormonal birth control... insertion of paraguard and it's few side effects are MUCH less terrifying.

Yeah its this stupid anti-female bias (imho). You're too young and might change your mind, and then I'd have to remove it, blah blah. That and getting it inserted is scary. In Canada most doctors barely mention it as an option, you have to push to find out more information.

Hormone bcp has all these negative side effects that we're supposed to just put up with?! C'mon, if it were guys cramping/bloating/mood swinging/anything else you'd get a vacation for your damn period.

IUDs are underpromoted and underused based on most women's needs. I sound like a salesman but seriously look into it before you start trying hormonal cocktails.

That sucks!! Preventing pregnacy shouldn't mean puking monthly

I don't know where you are but IUDS are way cheaper over the long run! If you have insurance it can be under $50 in the States and here there are clinics that insert them for free (if you can find them).

Even full price it's pretty easy, get a prescription from your doctor, go get it at a pharmacy, have it inserted by your doctor. It felt like a pap smear-ish - uncomfortable but doable. I think because it seems so medical people steer away but pills every day/mood swings/puking (?!)/list goes on...

It literally changed my life, I've told so many girls about it. I will never use take hormonal bc again!!

Try micronor...it's less effective because it's only 1 hormone, but if you're sensitive (like me) it's awesome. I've used alesse before, it made me feel like crap and I actually fainted because of it. I didn't notice any changes (mood, weight gain, skin - nothing) while on micronor.

I paid $400 out of pocket in 2003, and even at that it breaks down to being ridiculously cheap: $400 / 120 months = $3.33 a month. Even if you took it out at 5 years versus the full 10, that's still just over $6 a month. AND it doesn't fuck up your system AND it's as good a sterilization AND reversible.

    WIN.

Jesus Devus, that sounds terrible...how can you stay on that kind of pill? I couldn't put up with that...but yeah, $$ isn't an issue, anything that's not covered by my healthcard I'm pretty sure would be covered under health insurance. The other thing about the IUD is that I have been with my boyfriend a year off and on, and during the school year we're in different cities, etc. Basically I don't think I've been with him consistently long enough yet to get an IUD, that and we only have regular sex for about half the year, like, I probably would go off the pill in september when I go back to school because I don't see the point of being on any semi-permenant birth control when we're having sex only on a couple days once a month you know? I think if I try a couple other brands of the pill and don't like them either, and am in a long-term relationship an IUD would be the next thing to try for sure.

For me the IUD isn't really about being in a longterm relationship, nor were pills or really any bc - it was avoiding pregnacy. With anyone. Even if I wasn't in a longterm relationship I would still have it for my mental health, I'm not taking hormones or preggers risks for anything.

If you're definitely going hormonal I'd ask about Minocor, I know someone who can only use them. She's wicked sensitive too.

My gf was with a new guy and he pulled out her nuva ring fingering her, he thought it was a glowstick - what?!

...WTF. yeah. because girls come with glowsticks. They're there to help you with navigational issues...seriously?!?! That's ridiculous haha. But a la going off the pill---that would mean using condoms again, no babies in this tummy at the moment svp. I just meant like if this go at the pill is terrible again, at least I don't HAVE to stay on it for long.

Well, the doc perscribed me Marvelon, hopefully it will work nicely, and if not, I want a perscription of yaz, my sister is on it and apparently its been good to her, and the doc did say that the only indicator of what pills may work for you are those that have worked for other women in your family. I did ask about the IUD but like you said beckatron, she clammed right up and basically said "no". That its not a good option for me. I'll try this brand and then maybe another one and then seriously consider the iud. As for cellulite...that makes me nervous...I have maybe a few dimples right now under my butt but really nothing major. Hopefully I'll notice right away if it becomes a problem

I've heard good things about Marvelon. I JUST got on Nora-BE (aka Micronor, the mini pill). Basically it's a pill version of Implanon or Mirena. It only uses Progestin, and very small amount. I'll let you know how it goes...... supposedly it has the absolute LEAST amount of any side effects.

I have a progesterone stick in my arm that is about an inch long and very thin. It is inserted into the upper inner arm under local anasthesia. It's always 99.9% effective, whereas the pill's effectiveness fluctuates depending on if you do drugs, drink, or take other medicines. I actually still had heavy 12 day periods on the pill (when the doctor told me I wouldn't) but never had issues with weight gain or acne. There was that one time I had an accidental pregnancy (unfortunately it ended in either abortion or miscarriage, which the latter happened...), so I immediately switched to a stronger, more dependable birth control that was one less pill for me to take. (I take 24 pills a day for my Epilepsy and Bipolar disorder.) Implanon did cause my skin to break out, but with a balanced diet and sleep and taking care of it, it did not do anymore bursts of breaking out-ness. lol But in all seriousness, it is good for three years! You don't have to worry about inserting it or taking it out, the doctor does all that. You can feel it underneath your skin...it feels kind of weird, but you get used to it. It has helped with my PMS, I NEVER have had a period since getting it shot into my arm, no pregnancies, no cramping whatsoever, and it even counteracted with my Bipolar medicine and made me hornier again! The downside was the acne. It wasn't anything that was dramatic. I broke out mainly on the sides of my face, in the area a cell phone would hit your face when you're holding it up against your face and ear. It never broke out on my forehead, on my chin, on my nose, or on my cheeks. I'd look into it Odette! It really has made my womanhood a lot easier!!

remember - NO PERIODS WHATSOEVER and 99.9% effective
