Looking to buy one.. not really sure which to buy.. any suggestions?

I got a Seagate, hooked it up and everything was ready to go. I got a Western Digital, never could get it to work until I had to have some repairs done to the computer, and the repair guy hooked it up for me.
The Seagate somehow disconnects if you shut the computer off. You have to unplug the Seagate and plug it back in. Then it reconnects, and it is a good idea to back up manually.
According to the WD, if you unplug it, when you plug it back in, it automatically backs up anything new that was added while it was unplugged.

I have a seagate 500GB External hardrive works great as well backs up all your files and ou can just add other folders to it.. Ive had it for almost a year and still have Lots of room.. costs about 100 bucks. hope this helps

Probably closer to $60 for the seagate now, prices keep going down.

Depends on your connection type. USB 2.0/3.0, FireWire, or eSATA (external serial ATA). If you've got an eSATA port, use it. Data transfer speeds are significantly better between pc and external drive.
Seagate is a good brand with good warranty and I use those or WD Black drives as internal drives in my pcs. For externals I like Fantom "green" drives however. They seem to perform better, use very little power and I've not yet had one go bad. (I use them as server backup devices).
"Fantom Drives GreenDrive Pro 2TB USB 2.0 / eSATA External Hard Drive GDP2000EU" you can get at newegg for $105 shipped (if you're in the states). 2 Terabytes (2000 Gigs) of space for just about anything you can think of. Google it.
You can also pick up an eSATA card for your laptop or desktop for $30 or less to take advantage of the higher backup/stream speeds eSATA affords if your pc/laptop isn't currently capable.
Good luck and happy shopping.
