I've actually no idea of the cost of the mirena, but the last time I checked into IUDS without insurance it was like 300 bucks!
I don't have any chillins so nobody wanted to give me Mirena.
On a side note, the reason why it can often leave you periodless is because it's hormonal.. so you could just take birth control and avoid the placebo!![]()

Or you could just take birth control pills (not a tricyclic) and just skip the green week and take the next pack. Seasonique or Seasonelle or whatever it's called, is made specifically for that, but you don't especially have to take it. All BC will do it just fine.

Bun, I don't got chilluns either so they wouldn't give it to me eitherBut they did give me the implant. Implanon. It's so expensive it makes your teeth hurt (660$ w/insurance 800$ w/o) but it's good for 3 years and it's 99.998% proof against pregnancy.
I had hormone surges like woah when I got on it and spotted for a while but I haven't had a period in 2.5 years or so. If you want to test it out before you get it you can get The Ring. It's the same company so it's the same hormone mix. I liked the ring a lot but after a while it started to irritate my vag and I had to take it out.
I have a Mirena IUD. I've had it for about 4 years now (so I'll have to get mine taken out next year...) and here's my personal experience with the Mirena:
1. Both my children were conceived WHILE I was on birth control, and I've been through several types, I switched to Mirena when I was 22 and we're on four years no pregnancies! Yay!
2. Don't let them tell you all that mumbo-jumbo about leaving the strings long until you come back for the follow-up visit, make them cut the strings!!! My doc left it long citing the "follow-up visit" and one of the strings (which are more like fishing line) sliced my inner labia open!
3. You will have spotting for the first 6 months, it's annoying but there's not much you can do about it, and it varies from person to person.
4. You will have to check every month to make sure the strings still hang out of your cervix and/or it hasn't started to come out. It's uncomfortable, but not really a big deal.
5. In my personal experience, it has made me super prone to yeast infections, to the point where a guy HAS to shower or use a condom beforehand. And toys must be squeaky clean!
This sounds really, really bad, but I had mine put in right after a nasty miscarriage and I wasn't exactly in the "sane frame of mind" so I can't really tell you how much I paid for it total but I do remember giving them $300 the day of as a down payment (no insurance) and my Dad handled the rest.
All in all, after the first six months I'd say the Mirena is totally worth it, especially if you are a "fertile myrtle" like I am!
PLANNEDPARENTHOOD.COM I think gives you methods + costs. It does differ though. I had the paragard, costs my midwife like 700,but costs a doc 750+. So just depends on who you go to.
I'll have to look into that one.
I'd love to find a hormonal birth control that doesn't kill my sex drive... or make me a monster bitch.

Heehe yess , Im too fertile for my own good, plusss , my periods are overly heavy , I was taking birth control JUST for the heavy bleeding , Because i got pregnant on the pill.
The srting sounds scary D;

Ohh and on the sex drive note , when i was on the pill , sex was HORRIBLE , i couldn't get aroused , and that made it painful =[

I didn't notice any difference in my sex drive - I was a horny bugger before, a horny bugger afterward, and a horny bugger today!![]()

haha then again , i did get on RIGHT after i had my son. So that could have been a factor too.

There's a lot of stuff on this in the Body Business section.
She wonders how much he'd pay to see her innards, what it is guys think girls are hiding so that they always want to see them in every place.

I had a Mirena for 3 years, but my doctor had to remove it because I gained 60 pounds. It's apparently a very rare side effect, but I already have hormonal issues, so the Mirena made that part of it worse.
But other than the weight gain, it was an awesome option for birth control. And the no periods thing was lovely. I miss that.
I had one for around 2 years....and still got a period every month
Just a heads up to let you know it isn't guaranteed to leave you period free-and I was so glad to have mine removed (I'm in the UK,so my fitting and removal, and check ups were all free on the NHS)
Seconding the Planned Parenthood and Body Business, but Mirena won't necessarily allow you to skip periods - it changes from person to person depending on how sensitive you are to hormones. BC pills will work though you may experience some spotting. One strategy is to use pills until you spot badly (3-4m) and then take a week off them.
Sidenote: IUDs are awesome for me at least. No hormones, no thinking. Doctors disagree about inserting into never-pregnant women (like me) but that's mostly superstition and crap my MD says. It takes 15m at your GP and I cramped for a day after.

I take Seasonelle (pill) and it works great for me. Only get my period 3 times a year. It does not cause me mood swings, bloating or any side effects. I have been on it for 3 years. And Love it!
