yeah, I have to admit, I didn't even realise how much racism still exists in western culture until I started dancing. The first time I heard of the whole "quota" thing I was aghast. I remember writing a paper in my first year of uni for women's studies opposing the idea of white privilige, I was fresh out of high school in suburbia in a town where everyone is obsessed with being politically correct and racism is a big nono. I thought I knew everything and that there was no way in todays society that racism could still really be that prominent. Yeah dancing has really opened my eyes to what the real world is like, and this is one of the biggest issues I'm glad I'm more knowledgeable on because of it. That's terrible that you ladies have to deal with that. If I were you, I'd say something along the same lines back to them like "wow, you're so nice for a white guy" or "wow, you smell nice for a white dude" Like what Rayna said.

Think about it. They are telling the girl that usually the women in her culture/race are not good looking. That's why they say, "for a".

I'm PR & i've gotten this "hot for a" line a few times. Even worse, I had a customer bashing the women in my culture to my face when I didn't even ask for his dumb ass opinion.

So yeah, these stupid assholes don't think before they speak.
There's like ZERO PR people down here in Texas, all the Latin people are Mexican. So when I'm speaking Spanish, soooo many times I've had Mexican girls come up to me and say, "How do you know Spanish?" When I tell them my mom is from PR, they usually say something along the lines of, "You don't look Puerto Rican. I thought you were white"

How the fuck do you know what PR looks like? Have you been there? Didn't think so... I have blue eyes, so does my mom, my cousin is a red head! So was Miss Puerto Rico, Ingrid Rivera, a few years ago... So yeah.... this ignorance even exists within cultures and races.....

On that note, I think if I was born black it would be VERY hard for me to deal with this kind of ignorance. It would be nice if there was something you could say back that would put them in their place in a respectful way, and make them embarrassed at their own stupidity, maybe think twice before they made a comment like that again....

I get this a lot too. Followed by, asking me if i'm sure i'm 100%. It's annoying. Then I gotta explain that my culture is not a pure race. Waste of time.

I like the idea of throwing it back to them, like someone mentioned in this thread. hehe.

Those are not ignorant comments! An ignorant comment would be, "I don't want a dance because I don't like black girls" which I have heard several times! Or, "I would spend my money on you except you are BLACK!" ..Those are ignorant. You might get annoyed by those comments of how BEAUTIFUL you are for a black girl, but it makes YOU look ignorant to complain about that. I hate when people turn things into a race issue when it's not. I'm sorry you hear such negative, offensive comments, I don't know how any of you sleep at night hearing how beatiful you are. Sheesh.

The comments are very ignorant. When you give someone a compliment and add for a ____ at the end you are implying that those particular people are not supposed to possess whatever quality or skill you complimented them on. It doesn't matter if you're talking about black people, Mexican people, old people, strippers, construction workers or whomever! What it is saying is "you beat the odds."

Doctors use the phrase all the time, ex: "you have excellent muscle control and use of your lower limbs, for a paraplegic." It means, typically others in your "condition" don't fare as well you have or, your case is unusual.

So while the customer who made the statement may have said it out of kindness that does not excuse the fact that the "compliment" was backhanded and ignorant. (whether it was meant that way or not.)

Thats stupid not everything they teach you in the history books is true. and slavery existed 400 and even before 400 years ago, example would be of the Jewish slaves that the Egyptians had. she made a little mistake but because she is a black girl she is supposed to know her history. half of my Jewish friends dont even know there own history. so people jump all over her... and how do you even know she went to school in america just because black people were slaves here doesn't mean they were everywhere else so maybe you need to open up your mind a little more before making a comment

I thought it was obvious that Mzdeniro mixed the years since the beginning of slavery in the US with the years since the end of slavery. She made a simple mistake on the forum and people going ham. Jeez

Uh...slavery has always existed...it exists today...just because it isn't legal doesn't mean it's not still a booming business. It's pretty fucking silly to get in a fight over this.

..... One of the main reasons I would want to work in a black club would be the absence of these ignorant comments. To be in a place where my natural divine beauty is not seen as aberration. Some nights it is hard to look into that massive sea of young white privilged assholes and not want to punch every one of them in the face. But, alas, I must not lose my cool or become judgemental of all because then I then I will begin to lose the essence of who I am. Deep breath and on to the next one.

    That is all.

Just goes to show how ignorant they are...

Next time someone says "....for a BLACK girl" just reply with "Aw, and you articulate so well for an ignorant, inbred, wellfare case!" And walk away. Might as well meet their rudeness and ignorance with more ignorance. I'm all for not stooping to their level, but sometimes you just can't bite your tongue.

I hate when customers pull the race card more than anything (weight, height, accent, country of origin.). Often times they do it intentionally, thinking they can talk the girl down and lower her prices. Assholes.

Aye, I can relate to this topic as well even though I am not a dancer I get those comments just in life.

Even my best friend tells me "You're pretty for a dark skinned chick though". I just raise my eyebrow at her and she just laughs. Mind you she's lighter me!

Her girlfriend is light skinned as well, but she's mixed and never has she said such statement to me. Before she started to date my best friend all she dated was chicks darker than her.

My best friend says she never dated anyone darker than herself. She finds darker skinned females attractive, but according to her to be able to date them they have to be "BADDD as hell" or "Dark, but they have to look mixed.... like YOU!"

I can pass for a dark Indian (Coolie), Trinidadian, Dominican, Puerto Rican, Panamanian, etc.. I just look tropical basically.

And im not gonna lie, I do have some other blood in me, but at the end of the day my skin is still dark.
Why does it seem to not be good enough?

Well, if you group them as "whites," then no. But if you take it apart culturally, absolutely. I'm Irish, and although there isn't a ton of discrimination left about us in this country (except with some Italians in this area, for some reason), there is still a lot of racism in Britain against the Irish. I imagine you could lump all Jews in as "white," but there is a TON of antisemitism in this country, especially in more conservative areas.

Sure, I guess...maybe not COLOR, exactly, but appearance, definitely. A lot of Jewish people have a very distinctive facial structure and coloring. I've known skinheads who would point out random Jews all the time, then proceed to make nasty comments.

Skinheads that are taught to hate of course are looking to point out those which they despise and Im sure they could point them out a mile away. In general, however while some Jews have recognizeable features, I would say that just as many if not more are not CLEARLY identifiable at first glance as Jewish whereas as a black or bi racial person is much more easily identifiable.... Not just by by hate mongers but by the masses.

I wouldn't say white people have color issues. Ethnicity and class issues, yes. But I've only seen color issues amongst the non-"white" people I know. Like, my bolivian friend's mom getting upset that she got a summer tan and "ruined her pale skin." Or my good black guy friend M going into details about the types of skin colorations he prefers in reference to his own.

Some white people are most attracted to pale skin, like goth types. Others like a fake bake Barbie tan. But its not really that culturally pervasive like it is with minorities. Its actually something that's really interested me as an observer in life. But its not my place to have an opinion or judgement about the entire complex topic.

I don't think we need to be getting into an argument about who has been discriminated against most through history, black people or Jews...it's a silly, pointless argument, and a lot of meaningless anecdotal evidence is going to come up, and it will serve absolutely no purpose.

I think it's interesting that you say the compliment should just be accepted because it's an allegedly positive compliment. "You are beautiful" is different from "You are beautiful for a black girl". If you are beautiful you are beautiful regardless of race. The fact that the person giving the compliment feels the need to categorize your beauty as black beauty negates the positivity that was intended. It's like me seeing an attractive guy and saying he's cute for (fill in race). If he's cute, he's cute period. The for a black girl undermines the original compliment. I don't understand how acknowledging attractiveness while mentioning race should be overlooked, but someone declining my services based on my race should be deemed wrong. If a guy says he doesn't want a dance because he doesn't like black girls that is his preference and not wrong because it is his preference and $. I'm sorry it doesn't seem valid enough to be important to you, but people don't walk around telling caucausians on a regular basis they are attractive for caucausians. I have never heard anyone say Heidi Klum was hot for a German or Christina Aguilera was hot for a multiracial American. They just say their hot. Oh, wait, is it because those two ladies are perceived as just regular old white? It is a race issue because the person issuing the compliment brought race into it not me.
Thank Goodness I smartened up! The old me is dead and gone.
