I've worked at different clubs all over the country and my outgoings at each place varied dramatically. It got me wondering, how much does it cost you to work? How out of pocket are you when you first hit the floor? How many dances until you've turned a profit?
Currently I work at a dive joint with a 50/50 split, there are no house fees and we keep all tips. I take the bus to work, pack my own lunch/dinner and catch a $25 cab home. I probably spend $60 per fortnight on makeup & general supplies (eyelashes, snacks, new stockings, baby wipes, music) and try and keep my work related outgoings to a minimum. I work an average of 3 shifts per week, my cost per shift is probably $40. It takes me my first 2 dances to make that back.
At the most upscale club I worked at I'd pay up to $100 in house fees, VIP dances were a 60/40 split (dancer/house) and 10% was taken from all funny money. I'd get a cab to and from work ($25 each way), a blow dry at the salon every second shift ($40), mani & pedi each week ($60) and probably spent $100 per week on makeup & general supplies. Working an average of 4 shifts per week, my cost per shift was probably about $210. This really didn't seem excessive to me at the time as my earnings justified the expense, however I always did feel a little anxious until I'd at least made that money back. It would take about 4 standard dances to start making a profit.
You?
