Default Tracking Device on My Car?

Hi guys, well I think I've figured out how my mom has managed to keep dibs on me (always showing up at places I am or questioning how productive I am etc..) She let me borrow a new car (a spare family car) that I have been driving for the past few months; my question is could she have had some sort of tracking device placed? She is not tech savvy at all but very stalker "savvy"

Its possible... i have a cell phone for my daughter that I can go online and use a gps service to verify where she is, and its pretty accurate. Thing is, I just dont believe in sneaking to check up on her, I want her to know that I can if I need to and she knows I can do this. Then again, shes a child, once shes 18 I wouldnt have any need for it.

Anyway, check the trunk and under the seats for any cell phones or devices...

There is a frightning case here where a guy put a gps device on a girls car, followed her to Illinois where we don't have a death penalty and killed her here because he couldn't be executed. If someone put one on the car you are driving it could be up inside the bumpers, or tucked in underneath the car.

Your mom might have the phone tracker App on iphone or on her computer. I found this on my boyfriend's phone about a month ago. As long as GPS is on or unlocked on your phone, usually deep in your settings menu, this svc will pinpoint your location. Even when you remove the battery it still gives off a signal for awhile. It can be used/reset constantly for updates. I have my phone set to 911/emergency only and this app still works. I put my phone outside across the street in an empty parking lot and the tracker updated that I moved my phone from here to there. It's creepy but not illegal. Check your settings on your phone and change them if they say location on and look under the car for anything square/round/unfamiliar. They are cheap now and easy to install. Look in the for sale section and check out the covertchemisty post and click the link. They sell these devices and you can see what some of them look like.

Is it a GM? Does it have OnStar? Is the account in her name?

Drive it to a brothel in rural NV, catch a ride home, buy some popcorn, stay by your phone...

Progresive's new "snapshot" discount. Look it up. Let them track everything you do - and they'll give you a discount. What a GREAT idea...

It could be as simple as a Lojack installation. Also, if the car has a cell phone system in it, that can provide location information, too.

I know this is completely unsolicited.....so feel free to ignore....

Some other relevant questions would be how old are you? Do you still live at home(ie under their rules). Do you rely on them for support?

If you are of age, living on your own and the only support you are getting from your parents is a car they arent using.........you can just answer any questions they have with......
"Thanks for your concern, but its none of your business what i was doing there. You guys want to come over for dinner next Wednesday?"

If you ARE relying on them for support, you may have to be more diplomatic, but you can still convey to them that you are an adult and can make your own decisions and you feel uncomfortable being stalked.

As other folks in the thread have mentioned, not only is it possible, it's easy and she may not even be using the car to do it. She may be using your phone. If you're in a position to ask her what's up, now may be a good time.

Thanks everyone for your responses; I had no idea my question was answered till now. The jury's still out on whether she's tracking me or just really really paranoid. I am over 30 and not relying on her for support so yeah she should just trust me. I don't have OnStar and didn't find any suspicious boxes in / on the car. I did find some kind of GPS monitoring item on my phone bill though..

That's what it is. If you go through your settings menu see if it is possible for you to turn your location off and make it 911 only. Some cell phone providers can still GPS you no matter what. Check your provider and see if you can terminate that part of your service. If you are not primary account holder they may not allow you to make any changes. However, if you go to the store with a sob story about a crazy boyfriend who knows your account info and you just want GPS stopped they might help you. I have been using the girl done wrong deal at cell stores for years to get info I want about lots of things. There is just something about helping somebody that seems as if they really need it. Hope it helps.
