Dizzy Police thought my boyfriend was buying drugs?

Editing for privacy reasons. Basic story: Boyfriend was stopped/searched/questions by the cops after they saw a drug dealer behind him in line at a 24hour donut shop. Boyfriend was just buying donuts. Cops insist he bought drugs. He didn't.

Thanks to the people who responded!!!

Wow. Your area must be so much different from Vancouver. I mean, weird shit happens here, I just haven't heard anything like that especially about drug issues- everyone here is pretty laissez faire about it.

First of all, I would call your local RCMP and make a complaint. Document exactly what happened and get in touch with them. I know in the States that is an illegal search, I'm not exactly sure about laws in your area.

Why would they call your landlord? I've never even heard of that.

Pretty much cops everywhere just use intimidation factors to get what they want. If you're proactive, you'll be able to get all this ironed out. DO NOT BE AFRAID OF THEM. My dad always taught me that everyone is the same once you take off their uniforms. That cop is a PERSON, just like you and I- fuck him. If you feel like he did something wrong, speak up about it!

I've learned a long time ago that cops can just be dicks sometimes. I think the police force, by nature, just attracts that sort of person. I had a cop pull me over right in front of work once, back when I was doing restaurant work. He pulled me over for having expired tabs (which, admittedly, I did... my bad). I forgot my identification at home (again, my bad). I was polite and apologetic about the whole thing, yet he proceeded to slam my face down on the hood of his car while he frisked me. Then put me in the back of the car for half an hour while he looked up my name, etc. When my boss came out to ask the officer if he needed to call in someone else to cover my shift, rather than talking to my boss to confirm my identity, the officer simply told my manager very abruptly to go back inside and not interfere.

I was clean cut, wearing my work uniform. I have no idea why the officer felt the need to escalate the situation to that level... yet, there it is.

I thought my area was pretty lax about drugs and stuff too - this is the first time I've ever heard of an officer question someone about drugs, and I've seen people walking down the street, joint in hand.

Unfortunately, I don't know what it is we can complain about. Saying the word bullshit? Cops seems to be allowed to do more here in Canada than in the states. I'm reading on up on the laws of stop and searches in Ontario and everything they did was legal. All the cops have to do is think you did something illigal, and they can stop and search you right there. Also, as he really wasn't doing anything wrong, we can't contest a record because he has none - although they DID take down his name and our address. Doesn't make sense to me.

Why would they call your landlord? I've never even heard of that.
Apparently they're allowed to 'follow-up' on their investigation. They have our address, it wouldn't be out of place for them to call up the building owners and inquire about us. I wrote down Exotic Dancer on my lease for this apartment, so all I need is for my landlord to have the impression that my boyfriend is a drug dealer.

I do feel like the cops were in the wrong to stop him, and use such intimidating language (I couldn't have put that better myself). I don't know what is in my right to do, legally. I really want this to blow over with no marks on his name or mine.

I feel the need to mention that both cops that stopped him (there was one that stayed inside the car) were women.

Thank you for responding. Makes me feel much more validated about being upset.

That's terrible. I mean, I get that Police sometimes need to use force when they feel a person is a potential danger to them or others; but why bother if the person is being completely compliant? I mean - yeah, I suppose my guy could have taken off running, but the cops could have caught him in seconds - They had a car and were 1 foot away from him! Why use curse words and speak down to someone in such mean uncalled for manner?

In highschool I sat through a lot of those "Police are your friends!" seminars. We're told that if you're good to the police - nice, polite, co-operative, honest - the police would be good to you. But that isn't what happened! He told the truth, let them search him, and they CONTINUED acting like he was guilty of something. I don't think cops are bad people, but I DO think you're right about the personality type that police have.

I hope your head was okay from being slammed into the hood. What a pain in the ass.

Oh my.. Im sorry that happened to you and your bf! Did he get a ticket or anything that he HAS to do by law? If he didn't, I would not worry about it. Cops took my name on paper before (for smoking weed in HS when I was already 18 - oh I was skipping too) Cops also took my information when I got into an heated agurement with someone at the mall (was over 18 too then). Nothing happened - as long as he didnt get a paper that said he had to follow up through to court or pay a fine then he is OK.

When I did my criminal check, nothing popped up (this was after those things happened to me). If you are worried, you can always do a check after 30 days or so, as it takes a bit for the information to get into the system. I dont think its worth sueing, complaining, aguring with the officer or his department likely they wont do anything and just cause a higher red flag on your names. I honestly would not worry about it. I would just be cautious of your or your bf going out at that certain time, even if its across the street, the area isn't great that cops will stop anyone. Since he's new on the block, they wanted find out who he is. Its sad that they treated him that way, they should not have done that, very unprofessional! You got asshole cops - which sucks and im sorry, Im glad they did not do anything worse to your BF. Dont worry, they honestly would not dig deeper than it already is - they have no reason and likely just wanted to give shit.

Yeah no worries unless he was formally charged with a crime. They can follow-up but if he checks out then it's all cool Pretty doubtful they would spend a ton of resources into this for a very long period of time so no need to stress out - On the bright side if they do decide to do a stakeout etc. at least you get extra security!

I would make a formal complaint, but try to act polite during the incident and if hurt, go to the clinic to get a copy of you 'damage report.' Also get names of witnesses. (evidence) That sadistic cop will just get worse from associating with other sadists at work.
I loved going to strip clubs; I actually made some friends there. Now things are different for the clubs and for me. As a result I am not as happy.

Customers are not entitled to grope, disrespect, or rob strippers. This is their job, not their hobby, and they all need income. Clubs are not just some erotic show for guys to view while drinking.

NOTE: anything I post here, outside of a direct quote, is my opinion only, which I am entitled to. Take it for what you estimate it is worth.
