Probably yes. (I assume it is "check engine", or some similar wording light). A prior car of mine would have light come on for first few miles after leaving out in rain, or a big temperature drop, then go out. When light came on steady ( by then car was 8-9 yrs old), dealer suggested that (original??) gas cap may be worn. Replaced gas cap, problem solved.
Of course, manual gives dire warnings, sometimes warnings do have consequences. (expensive part replacement, etc). I had a rental cars light come on halfway through 90 mile drive back to hotel at night. I merely traded it in for another car- didn't want to press my luck further than the 45 miles.
I'm right 96% of the time.I don't sweat
the other 5% .......................
I have a toyota and mine comes on sometimes when I drive on the interstate too much going too fast. Something about air in some pipe. (thats what Vavoline said). You could always just bring it into and oil changing place looking cute and say "Hey, I just got my oil changed here a few days ago and my light came on while I was driving home. I don't want to pay for this. But can you check it out?" You are probably fine but its worth getting looked at and I wouldn't pay to have it looked at.

Advice from my totally practical husband........
As you've just had the oil changed, in this case the light probably means low oil pressure. After the oil is drained out and filled up again, there will be 'airlocks' in the system which have now been blown out - so - the oil probably only needs topping up, which is easy.
Just don't put it into the water..........

Take it to an AutoZone or Advanced Auto parts store (the chain stores). They will read the code for free and tell you what is causing the light to come on. "Check Engine" lights generally can be driven on and are usually something to do with the emmissions system. If its an oil light, an oil lamp symbol or a low oil light, DO NOT DRIVE IT. Serious damage will occur. Once you have them read the code post what it is and can advise further.

No no no, don't move it. Check the oil!!!! The oil is probably fine, but as has been mentioned sometimes they screw up and you end up very low, or with no oil at all. If you have never done it read your owners manual and it should give you enough info so you can make sure you have oil in the engine. While you have the hood up check your coolant level. These are just sound precautions, if you are out of oil or coolant and drive more than a couple of blocks you can ruin your engine. If you have coolant and oil you are probably safe to drive it until you can get it looked at.
These days its likely you have a bad oxygen sensor, it isn't great to drive with it like that but you can get by. If it is a sensor it can really hurt your fuel economy.
I checked the oil, everything seems fine. I got some guy to drive it a bit and check whether it was acting weird, he said it seems fine. Drove it for 30 miles already... All good!

Still go to AZ or A Auto and have them pull the codes. Something is making the light go on. Also in some states it will not pass inspection with a "check engine" light on.

If the light was on before the oil change you can discount being low on oil or any other fluids, they should check them all when doing the oil change.
Sorry to the OP I hope I am not hijacking the thread too far off course. No one wants me to go into a long technical explanation but you never get air bubbles with a oil change that could cause a trouble light as was mentioned earlier. There are thousands of instances where someone at a speedy lube doesn't tighten the oil filter or oil plug down correctly and the oil leaks out. If you get a check engine light on after a oil change stop as soon as you can and make sure you have oil in the engine. If you don't have oil do not drive another foot, the engine can be destroyed in only a few seconds without oil.

The check engine light is misleading. It's like a catchall indicator now.![]()

Amber light probably isn't anything too serious. If it turns red, I'd definitely take it to a mechanic.

OK hun. If you've checked the oil....then take a look at the water level, the fluid in the battery and the battery connections. If they are all OK - take it to the garage and get the mechanics to look at it. You never know with these computer control systems.....it could just mean that it's due for a service..!!
What make and model of car is it? Do you have an Owner's Handbook?

I have a maintenance required light that comes on...I was told it comes on periodically (like every so many miles) and that it doesn't necessarily mean anything. Anyone know if that's true? Maybe that's what is happening with yours too? This thread it reminding me that I should probably have it checked out just to be sure...

LL: Cadillacs and some other cars actually have a maintenance schedule built into the electronics, so the car tells you when to bring the car in for service.
Kisca: You didn't drive that far yet. Is the gas cap loose? Lots of Check Engine triggers are based on exhaust gas contents, emission controls and ventilation checks. The gas cap seal is supposed to allow the car to maintain lower pressure in the gas tank, ensuring that you don't have gasoline vapors evaporating into the air before they've had the chance to go through the rest of the engine. Beyond that, there really are lots of things that can cause the light to come on. Still, undoing and re-closing the gas cap has worked a bunch of times for people.
