No you cannot write off tampons, food, etc. These are considered necessities. Every living woman needs these so why should we get to write them off??

a tampon isnt a necessity. no woman NEEDS tampons. i personally no longer use tampons but write off sea sponges and menstrual cup because i ONLY use them for work. i cant be bothered to shove an object inside my vagina unless i am going to make money

i dont write off pads since i dont use them for work

Good luck convincing an auditor that you wouldn't brush your teeth or wash your body if you weren't a stripper.

You can only write off things that you absolutely NEED for work. They must pass the "housewife test"--i.e. you can't write off things than any normal woman would/could use in her everyday life.

In other words, you shouldn't even be writing off things like makeup unless it's costume makeup.

The only things I wrote off were shoes and costumes.

Be very, very careful if you're trying to write off things like tanning / nails. You're practically begging to be audited.

TRUE but I was just getting at what Charlie said in the above post. MOST women use them not JUST strippers.

doesnt mean you cant write it off. i write off makeup too. hell i know people who act for a living and they write off every day clothing because they use it to audition with. ive NEVER been audited, nor have i ever been at a risk of being audited because my write off amount isnt ridiculously high.
youre not going to get audited because you write off something that might sound like an every day expense...how is the gov to know? when you write things off you dont specifically NAME what they are. at least i dont when i file my taxes online. they have categories and you write down the dollar amount.

eh I guess. I have an accountant do mine and I trust her judgement. If you can do it go for it though!!!

Just saying, I wouldn't do it.

If you do do it, make sure you're 1) Claiming taxes as an exotic dancer and 2) Keeping your receipts.

I was very conservative with my tax write-offs (as you should be, legally) partially because I was claiming as a cocktail waitress instead of as a stripper.

I'm sure you can get by with more as the latter. But I'd still try to underestimate expenses if I were you. Writing off gas mileage is one thing...writing off getting your nails done is another. The former is clearly a business expense whereas the latter is much more subjective.

^ Except that I'm pretty sure you can't write off gas mileage if you work at a single club.

I agree with Charlie. Though, it would stand to reason that if you buy MORE makeup than the average woman, then you could write off the extra, feasibly.

Just be careful. I personally wouldn't suggest writing off the nails.

actually, from what i can remember, gas is one of the things you cant write off if youre working at the same club most of the time. thats like someone who works at an office writing off their gas. it doesnt work that way. if youre traveling to work though then its a different story. getting your nails done is totally a tax write off. just because some girls are ridiculous and get their nails done without it being related to work doesnt mean its not a work expense for you (and yes i do think getting your nails done just for shits and giggles is kind of ridiculous, as is shaving your pussy when youre not an adult worker, or doing your hair super fancy when youre not gonna make any money). saying you cant write it off is like saying that someone who works at an office shouldnt write off paper and staples because normal people use paper and staples too

You can write off your nails, makeup, and hair especially if you get them done. You're paying someone to do it for you every day/week/month for work so yes. I get my hair and makeup done nearly every day at work and it adds up - $50/day. I wouldn't be doing that if I wasn't a stripper.

Unfortunately, if and when you are audited, the IRS agent is going to point out that housewives who have absolutely no business reason to do so are also patronizing nail salons, hair salons etc., are also buying dept store makeup etc.

The IRS also makes use of statistical methods to determine potential audit targets. One of those statistical methods compares amount of claimed business deductions versus amount of business income across large groups of tax returns carrying the same 'occupation code'. Anything that deviates significantly from the group's average is probably going to cause yellow flags to be waved !

In regard to business use of vehicle tax deductions, the trip from home to the place of business and back again is considered to be a commute not business travel and thus is NOT tax deductible.

My tax lady is reeeeeally good. It helps that I save receipts for everything I buy though, just remember that! I write off tanning and my nails and getting my hair done. I never used to do those things before I started dancing, and I started making a lot more money after I did. I get a receipt at the end of the night showing how much I make and I keep the receipts of what I spend money on to show that these things that I didn't do before are helping my business. So far I haven't been audited but who knows, the IRS comes after you waaaaaaay later sometimes.

just keep in mind that it is YOU who needs to prove things to the IRS....and it is YOU who is audited....and it is YOU who the IRS comes after....and it is YOU who ends up in jail....not your tax lady!!!

Let me clarify.. My tax lady is really good at helping me organize everything so I can make a good case, that's all I'm saying. I'm not an idiot, I realize that I am responsible for my own money and my own taxes, however my tax lady is helps me out. Thanks for letting me know my responsibilities though, super helpful!

This is definitely true, and a really great thing to keep in mind. Personally, I'd rather eat the cost of petty expenses (like make-up) than run the risk of getting audited.

For an expense to be deductible, it has to be ordinary and necessary. Among the list of expenses the IRS has allowed:
    Uniforms;
    Costumes; and
    Theatrical makeup,

Some things the IRS won't allow:
    Makeup;
Clothing, even clothes you would not ordinarily buy; and
    Commuting expenses.

Obviously there is an argument over what constitutes theatrical makeup and what constitutes makeup. The IRS instructs auditors to disallow makeup bought at department stores and specialty stores. (Sephora even though it's expensive is not going to pass the test.) For that reason, I did buy makeup from a costume shop and they marked the receipt "theatrical makeup" and I never had a problem. Forget about tanning and routine hairstyling. Forget about nails too. But, I never had a problem with costumes from stripper shops. But, forget about using Adam and Eve or places like that.

Travel is its own special problem. Forget about deducting mileage between home and a local club. That is commuting. But, if you travel out of town and keep contemporaneous documentation of the distance, destination and business purpose of the trip. Then deduct it. Overnights in hotels/motels, same rule. Records count! Air fare, train fare and parking count too. Also rental cars.

My CPA told me that I would be able to deduct at least a portion of what I spend on nails/manicures and fake eyelashes (hey, a years worth ads up...lol) because and ONLY because they are absolutely mandatory at the club I work at. This is my first year dancing; I plan to have my CPA double check and then I have a copy of the dancer requirements for the club stored with my receipts for my when I file my taxes to avoid any unfortunate audit situations.

So if you work at a club with specific requirements you may want to check and see if otherwise undeductible items like eyelashes are then deductible.

^^^ I'll try to make my point a different way. In general, attempting to take perhaps $1000 worth of 'questionable' business expense tax deductions might save you $300-400 in reduced income taxes. However, in exchange, attempting to take that $1000 worth of tax deductions could very well attract the attention of the IRS. And unlike an 'employee' with fully documented W2 income, as an independent contractor your income is unprovable one way or the other.

This matters because, if IRS attention is attracted, one thing that the IRS will definitely look at is whether or not the amount of income you reported is 'reasonable' ... versus your local cost of living, versus your paper trail of major purchases etc. It's entirely possible that, as the result of an IRS audit, a dancer who actually earned and reported perhaps $40k of annual income will face an IRS claim that her actual income must have been higher in order to explain the rent payments, utility payments, credit card expenditures, car payments, savings and investments, tuition payments etc. she has been making. If the IRS claims she must have earned $60k instead of $40k the dancer really has no way to prove that she DIDN'T earn the $60k that the IRS claims she did. This can potentially result in a tax bill for an additional $8,000 ... because the dancer will be incapable of producing any income records that are verifiable via a third party to prove that she only earned the $40k she reported as having earned. This is the downside risk of an independent contractor business person of any kind being audited. IMHO the potential risks of taking questionable business expense tax deductions outweigh the comparatively minor benefits.
