    Default hip problems

so i have this weird pain in my hip that has recently gotten a lot worse.

for a long time i had something where i moved my hip at certain angles it would hurt but then it would kind of pop and feel fine again. i always assumed this was how everybody's hip worked, although at some point realized i was mistaken. on my neurological development report from when i was a child it mentions i had a "hip click". although when i researched this more i got so many results describing different things. its not audible... when it pops it is the same sensation as when you crack your back or knuckles though.

a couple of weeks ago it started really bothering me. if i work out on the elliptical at some point it will start hurting a lot.. and it will be difficult to move my hip... for a while i was able to kind of stretch it in a way to pop back into place but even now that doesnt seem to work.

i called my dad-- he seems to think it could be arthritis. i dont really want to go to a specialist about this for a variety of reasons.. partly because im not sure if my insurance will cover it.

has anyone heard of something like this or had a problem like this?
The best thing i have heard in a strip club to date:
customer: we should get married right now! we should get a shotgun marriage!
me: uhh... i think you are misunderstanding what a shotgun marriage means. A shotgun marriage means you knock me up and my daddy shows up at your door with a gun and forces you to marry me and raise the baby. You mean elope.
customer: hmm... nah actually i will take the shotgun marriage. At least then we would be having sex.

I have this in my shoulknee, ankles, and knees. Sometimes I have to grab my knee and forcefully pop it, or twist my ankle a certain way. The drs don't know exactly what's wrong, and just say stretch, yoga, and advil. :-( I've thought about going to see a chiropractor or acupuncturist. Yoga does seem to help a little.

Google Bilateral Band Tendonitis/Hip Tendonitis/Bursitis. Or even just "Tendonitis", and see if that is similar to what you're feeling. I SWORE the pain I was experiencing was the bone popping or something, but it tuned out to be a joint muscle/bone problem. I had to go to physio therapy for it for over a year, and it still bothers me to this day. It's basically caused by when a lateral muscle running down your leg is tight and kinda 'twangs' back and forth across your hip bones (that's my super simple definition, I'm sure it gets more complicated but I'm too lazy to type it out).

Oh here we go! "Dancers Hip" (that explains a lot): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snapping_hip_syndrome

If it is a form of arthritis you will feel some relief with a NSAID (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory) most common are forms of ibuprofen (ie advil, aleve, naproxen, motrin) This is a good way to narrow down what is the diagnosis. It could also be you need a simple adjustment(if it is a non-complex adjustment I should be able to do that for you when I am there soon Also, from your description it might be a nerve impingement, which can occur from a variety of issues. What relieves the pain? What causes the pain to start? Is it worse with increased activity? I need to review Ortho, so I will keep a look out for this.

How are your IT bands? Do you take the time to stretch them? I didn't for years and it lead to a lot of hip and hamstring pain until I started taking care of them. I've also had bursitis before in my hip, but there was no popping with that for me... it was just tender to the touch and visibly bruised/swollen.

I am no doctor, but whenever something is popping in and out of place, it makes me think that the body's alignment is off somewhere. I was having intense popping in my left knee when I biked for a couple of months. I just kept shrugging it off until I couldn't take the pain anymore. I talked to my massage therapist about it and he said he thought I had overstretched upper back muscles and pecs that were too tight, from being in a tucked aero position on the bike for hours and hours on end. This was causing the entire left side of my body, from my neck down, to tighten up. That included pulling my quads and hamstrings up too tight, which then effected the tracking of my kneecap, which caused the popping. I started doing some upper back exercises to rebalance my chest and back muscles, and within two weeks, the popping and pain had completely subsided, and I haven't had problems since. It's very possible that what you are experiencing is a muscular imbalance.
