Default What is acceptable acne for dancing?

I'm ready to start dancing, got all my equipment, practiced my stage and lap dances and the only thing holding me back is my self-consciousness about my skin.

I know nobody has absolutely clear skin (there are a lucky few) but what's the line where management/custies won't buy you?

I've got some hyperpigmentation on my upper back but I'm great at makeup on my face.

Dermablend worries me because it'll rub off and being in the light on stage worries me that people will see my bemishes or up close during dances.

I had the same problem. I just dotted concealer over the darker scars and wore my hair down (you could wear a wig if your hair is shorter) to cover my back all night. That did the trick- no one noticed and I made $$ just fine.

I use/d almay concealer; it holds up pretty well.

    That's so comforting to hear!

I know its not THAT bad but in my mind, I'm running thru a list of all my flaws: stretchmarks on butt and thighs, hyperpigmented spots, moderate acne (face covers up fine), slightly less toned tummy since my BA.

I've read time and time again that the lighting and men-do-not-notice factors help a lot...but I'm still imagining my audition going like this:

    Me: *prances up looking hot*
    Management: um, nope.
    Me: *trudges out defeated*

I'm sure you'll be fine, hon. Everyone has their 'flaws', things they don't like about themselves. You're just nervous because you're about to be put in the proverbial spotlight, and you don't want everyone else seeing all those little things that only you notice in the mirror. Probably every new entertainer goes through this.

So stop freaking out about the little stuff. Focus on the important issue that this world needs as much sexy in it as it can handle, and you're just the person to give that sexy to the world. Now, go forth and make the world a hornier place!

From what you described it really doesn't sound as if your acne is that bad. Even if it was, the club is dark. Guys don't pay attention to every little detail, they tend to focus on the big picture more. Most don't even know what stretch marks are.

Don't worry about it. Just get it through your head that you are hot shit and nothing can stop you

I have issues with acne. Up until recently I couldn't get it to go away, I still get them of course but retin a micro has made a considerable difference on existing acne as well as helped me get rid of scars. Also just make sure you bring all the necessary touch up products to work so you can freshen up every other hour or so.

I hate to be the downer, but sometimes higher-class clubs are pickier. Have you looked at the other girls to see different "acne-levels" and how yours compares?

Yeah, that's what's throwing me about the club.

When I was there scoping it out, I was totally on-par in regards to my physique and boobies (fake, D cups) and I've been pole-dancing for a while now so my dancing is decent.

About 70% of the girls look to have nice skin and then 30% had their makeup caked on thick. Only because I was really looking hard could I see that they were hiding blemishes but I'm sure the guys had no clue.

I won't know until I try so I'll just have to wing it. All the dancer look so hot when they're done up and prowling the club, its hard not to be intimidated and compare yourself.

Ive had some pretty moderate acne when dancing. It def makes it harder cause you are forever re-touching makeup and I was always getting chemical peels which helped. Eventually I tried Spiro which was recommended by another SWer and I had perfect skin again... yay! I went off it about 4 months ago and it hasnt come back. I get the occasional 1-2 but nothing like before. Its so dark in there and if your good at makeup Im sure you will be fine. It just sucks cause I know I was always shy about it back then.

This is what I'd be most worried about. Get some Sally Hansen spray makeup:

I know a lot of girls that use it, and have used it myself for bruises. That stuff holds up through anything, but you have to fully let it set first!

I've suffered from 'skin issues' most of my dancing career ... the main way it affected my money making was if I LET it ... meaning the nights I was bagging myself out about my skin my confidence dropped hence my money making mojo went out the door. So stay focused on your good points and as you touched on - it's never as bad as we think it is.

Second major point is use a make up that doesn't affect your skin. A lot of stuff out there is actually acne causing, especially when you start to sweat with a face full of make up that bacteria can just build up under (eeewww). I found Clinique really good but they are several good brands so find one that works to prevent future outbreaks.

    And ... good luck! xx

    Thanks again everyone!

Will get the Sally Hanson spray-on for the butt-ocks, lol.

Grrr, if not for my freaking skin I would be the first to say I'm a ten. I've got my lips done, nose done and boobs. My body is awesome from poledancing but I've always had this issue with my skin.

Since the hormones were set loose around age thirteen I have always been on one form of acne medication or another. I know that short fixes are what you are after right now, but I would totally recommend making an appointment with a dermatologist. They truly can make all the difference and give you something to transform your complexion. I can only speak for what has helped me in the long term and it is this:

-Not washing with any kind of face soap. It dries me out and makes my skin kick up oil production. Instead I rub my face with jojoba oil and wipe it off with warm water and exfoliate with a washcloth. Oil for breakout skin may seem crazy but it has made the BIGGEST difference in how happy my skin is.

-Differin. A lot of the retinoid creams were much too harsh for me and getting through the beginning “break out” period was hell. Just could not handle it. But differin is a bit gentler, and I can wear it during the day under my make up if I chose where as with any other retinoid you cannot because the sunlight degrades it.

-Toning with a mixture of diluted apple cider vinegar, a little tea tree oil and a whole lotta water. In areas like my collar bones where I am prone to break out due to body sprays and my hair products it has cleared it up. It does not smell pleasant but it fades after it dries so that you will not notice it throughout your day.

-Moisturize. A lot. Day and night. Of course, with a mild and oil free variety. Sometimes this takes trial and error to find a moisturizer that works for you but makeupalley as awesome reviews that have helped me. Also, if you just cannot find a conventional moisturizer that doesn’t throw your skin out of whack jojoba oil works as well.

Goodluck! Also, acne.org has been a wealth of information for me when I first began taking my fight with breaking out seriously.

i used to have horrible facial acne due to pcos. it never stopped me from getting hired.

in regards to marks on your upper back: get some long clip in hair extensions. i have a shoulderblade tattoo that ppl barely notice because i have long hair. if you have long hair it will basically be hidden-- just wear your hair down during an audition.
The best thing i have heard in a strip club to date:
customer: we should get married right now! we should get a shotgun marriage!
me: uhh... i think you are misunderstanding what a shotgun marriage means. A shotgun marriage means you knock me up and my daddy shows up at your door with a gun and forces you to marry me and raise the baby. You mean elope.
customer: hmm... nah actually i will take the shotgun marriage. At least then we would be having sex.

    Thanks everyone for your support!

I got hired last night!!! Without any body makeup as well (it was always rubbing off).

That club is SO freaking dark you can barely even see the dancers naked in the booths.

I used to have acne, and I would pick at it (yaaaay OCD). To stop that vicious cycle, I found Spironolactone. If you really feel like you have a medium level of acne that is hormonal, it's worth a try. It's a blood pressure medication that I take for its side effect--it lowers the androgens in your body. Androgens cause hormonal acne.

Do a search for it on here if you are interested, or PM me. I pay $30 every 3 months for a 90 day supply. That shit is a godsend. I know a few others on SW have followed suit, so they can tell you about their experiences as well.

I can definitely relate though. I'd avoid going up to customers constantly. Even if they didn't notice, just knowing that you have acne is such a self-esteem downer.

If your skin is sensitive aand prone to acne, be sure to take care of your butt after dancing a shift. After sitting on the stage, chairs, and barstools in your short skirt/thong all night, your butt will be exposed to a lot of funk. You can avoid serious buttne (thanks Contessa!) by wiping your butt down with alcohol before you put your street clothes on at the end of the night. Or (if you don't want to do that in the dressig room), make sure you wash really well with soap and/or alcohol when you get home.

    Btw- congrats on gettign hired!!!

I used to have terrible acne, and NOTHING would make it go away. Somebody on this board suggested it could be white flour or sugar. I experimented with my diet and found out, sure enough, it's the four! And the damn stuff is in EVERYTHING!

So if you can't make your acne go away, try changing up your diet.

^ Cutting out dairy also seems to make a huge difference for me. Whenever I add dairy or red / white meat back into my diet, my skin goes crazy. And similar results for gluten, but less intense.
