    Tired I can't tan because I'm black...so they say

Well let me start off by saying that I've always found it to be pure ignorance when a person says that black people can't tan...

My mom is light skinned. She tans. My aunts are light skinned. They tan. I'm light skinned (just a tad bit darker than my mom) and I have thought about tanning. I don't see what the big issue is. I've always wanted that golden bronze color. Even when I use bronzer, I feel that I look too orange, which is the reason why I want to tan in the first place. (I would try a spray on tan but I want it to last longer than a few days) But when I tell people that, they look at me like I'm a total nutcase, and quite frankly, it pisses me off.

One of my girl friends asked me if I wanted to go the gym with her and I said sure. I told her that I may hit the tanning bed and she turned around and practically screamed at me, "What the fuck are you talking about? Black people don't tan." Really??? i got so pissed that I ended up not going to the gym with her. But it's like, every time I even mention tanning, someone always has something to say and I'm getting sick of it.

It is unfortunate, but that is the way ignorance works. You'll have to ignore them and keep it moving basically. If it bothers the people you know that much, just go and tan without telling them. When They see how great your skin looks, you wont have to explain jack- it will speak for itself

You cant change anybody else's ignorance , oh well , I don't know how "light" or "dark" you are but I tan , I'm also biracial and pretty light and I still get looks , If you're an adult an know the risks involved in it and that's what you wanna do I say let the lady at the tanning salon be the next one to give you a funny look , also note that you're gonna have to fill out this paper and I guess theory goes the darker your original skin tone is the longer you'll last in the bed , but honey you CAN burn so tan safe ! and if it really bothers you that much what someone has to say about it say you have a skin disorder that requires it ... happy and safe tanning !

    Thanks girls!

I just hate when people bring race into a subject that has absolutely nothing to do with it.

I've never been to a tanning salon before but I do know the risks...I don't plan on tanning all the time though. If I had a backyard where I actually had some privacy away from nosy neighbors I would definitely lay out in the sun. I just want to be gorgeous for the summer.

Not much of a friend is she. Seems like pretty common sense to me that anyone can tan. Sun exposure on skin creates pigmentation. Unless you're absolutely the color of onyx, logic pervades that tanning is possible.

Woooow. I'm darker skinned and I can still tan. I don't use tanning beds cause for my skinn it's pointless, I'm dark. But I am CAPABLE of tanning. I darken in the summer. Ppl are just beyond stupid some times.

I know I get darker. I'm DARK skin and ppl look at me crazy when I say I want to be darker but I just like to have an even skin color and when I tan I get this beautiful reddish gold under tone. My legs are like two shades lighter and II hate it so much

Honestly I understand why they think that about darker skin but to say lighter skin doesn't tan is weird for me

    Oh your in Ohio.

Exactly! In the winter my yellow undertones really show through. I tan outside in the summer to get a rich even skintone. I feel ya.

I love getting all chocolate in the summer time. I am medium brown skin and tan very easily. Definitely expect some raised eyebrows when you mention tanning. They will raise their eyebrows again when they see how good you look when you're done.

All skin tans regardless of colour. Ignore the ignorance.

Back when I was in high school, every black girl I knew was rubbing bleaching cream on her skin to get lighter. I remember how they laughed at me and called me ignorant because I was horrified that someone would put bleach on their skin, lol.

Things have changed a great deal in a relatively short period of time. Dark skin was not embraced in the past and most black women did not tan because getting darker was "bad" just like having natural hair was "bad". I can see why people find it surprising.

Don't mean to thread jack, but...Are there any other black/biracial girls that tan? I'm about Alicia Keys' or Beyonce's complexion and I LOVE the glow that my skin gets after a day at the beach, but my white boyfriend thinks I'm crazy for wanting to go to a tanning salon. I'm thinking about just laying out in my back yard to avoid the awkward visit to a tanning salon, but I don't want to be out there all day lol.

My son's father always wanted me to go to a tanning salon. I'm a nice cinnamon brown and I can tan in March on an overcast day (this has happened lol). I was scared to try tanning but it does give a nice even color. Try a bronzing agent first, something that works naturally and gradually, just to see how you like it and how dark you want to go.

It's just not something that black people usually do, so it surprises them. If one of my white friends said, "Hey, girl, do you have any neutralizing shampoo? I'm about to go get a relaxer."
I'd be like, "STFU. White people don't get relaxers."

Of course, some of them DO...it's just not very common. Tis all.

I know this is an old post but I tan VERY easily. I grew up in Hawaii and every summer I'd get sunburnt. I'm a Cinamon color with yellow undertones. Just moved to Ohio and my skin is getting lighter in blotches. I want to tan to even out my tone.

i also moved to a cold place and now my skin is getting those lighter blotches too. it makes me really self concious. i also get dark rings around my eyes and i just look sick. i tanned in a bed for about 2 years as little as i possibly could. i got good results, but realized the tan fades a lot faster for me than a real one from the sun. i used creams etc and showered every other day, but i still would have to go about every 1.5 weeks to keep it up. and looking in photos from then, i can really tell the tan isnt natural. its probably different for everyone. im bi racial with light skin like zoe kravitz and i tan super easy and can get like 30 shades darker in the summer. but the bed makes me look a little orange. also started worrying about getting wrinkly if i kept it up, so i quit. so for now i run outside when the sun is shining ...oh i also tried the sunless tanning creams, but it came off on my clothes. might be okay for a few nights if you have something to do and want a little more glow
