Default Should all magazine shoots be paid??

I was just wondering is it acceptable to do magazine shoot for "credit" only? I was told I was crazy to do it for "free" by a photographer I shoot with regularly, he said every magazine shoot should be paid, and they should provide makeup, hair, etc.

Well, I got 3 magazine (guaranteed published) offers, but in trade for "credit" only, and I do my own hair/makeup/travel/etc.

But since I'm trying to build credits under my name, I'm wanting to do ahead and do it...or would this be completely stupid on my part?

Does anyone have advice or been through this? This is the first time I've had this come up, so I am clueless. Any thoughts or knowledge on this would be greatly appreciated

    Thanks!!!

I only do it if i get paid but thats me. You can always ask for
    your web site listed,
couple hundred free copies to autograph and sell at conventions,
    rights to use the photos

From my experience in modeling, Test shoots are an extremely important aspect in building your portfolio (gotta get exposure somewhere right!).
It's completely ok to do some modeling here and there without pay, just make sure you clearly express your goals, plans, and reasons for modeling when speaking to the photographer.

Now as for the doing your own hair and makeup thing, I've had to do that for myself as well as the whole crew of models before a show one time. It was my first big runway show btw it was bananas...lol Usually if a magazine or agency is local or not a well recognized one doing your own hair and makeup may be required! Especially if your just starting out. Sometimes as a model you must be prepared for all possible senarios good and bad. Learning how to do your own hair, makeup, and stlying will definitely help to better prepare you for future bookings and go-see's!!

I wish you the best of luck on your shoot (knock em dead girl)!

    WTF?

Guarenteed published doesn't even mean anything... Unless you have something in writing that says you will get x number of pages/images in y number of issues, don't do it. Even then, do your homework on this "magazine" by at least asking for a sample copy, and if you can't find it in stores or online (on a site other than their own), it's not really a magazine (just a fancy newsletter, lol).

If they want to work with you then your "established" enough for them without having to do free stuff.

I'm affraid to ask if these are nude shoots

How did they find you (site) and what images did they see (amature/professional)?

AND you will pay for travel... *sigh*

I think you should listen to your photographer friend.

I model and time for pictures on cd or print is the norm. Paid work is rare. If you are doing anything above art nude however, you should damn well be paid for it, even if only a nominal amount! Make sure you have a model release form and know exactly how many images you will get, in what format, and how you, and they, can use them in future.

are they going to print your photos then you should be paid. its not like its a newbie photographer trying to build his portfolio.

you should be paid, as for hair and make up that is debatable because make up is expensive and you might not like the make up artist.

I do a lot of TFP modeling, but if it was for an actual magazine, pay me!

I've done a few smaller magazine shoots for trade, but I got a number of the magazines shipped to me so that I could sell them.

If you feel that it's worth it to get a tear sheet go ahead and do it. I can tell you though that larger magazines will all pay you. Taboo, Hustler, Penthouse, Leg Show, Barely Legal, Playboy, all of those magazines paid me when I shot for them.

So if you're shooting on spec (someone is saying, "we'll shoot these and send them to the magazine to see if they want them") don't do it for free. If the person you're shooting was certain that you've got the look the magazine wants he would pay you ahead of time. The only reason a spec shooter wouldn't pay you would be that they're worried you might not make it in. Then you will have done a shoot and the photos wouldn't be in the magazine and he's free to resell them somewhere else without compensating you at all.

ETA I've been working as a print/video/internet adult model for 6 years now so if you've got questions about specific publications feel free to send me a PM.

    Thanks for everyones input.

The magazines are Gent, D Cup, Busty Beautys. The photog is in New Jersey.

Anyways, I am trying to get credits under my name so I can get a start on feature dancing in the coming months, so I thought maybe it'd be a good idea to go ahead to shoot for these.

Has anyone shot for these? And she told me it was guaranteed published, and that it'd be like 4 months down the road published, and I would recieve a copy.

Does this sound right ? OR any other thoughts..

Thanks again for everyone who is reading this, responding, etc..I really apprec it!

Was this a man who approached you about this? I ask because men pretending to be photographers or talent agents for magazines is a scam from way back. There used to be this guy who would advertise he would shot women for magazines then the girls got paid if they sold. Of course then he claimed they never sold and and he sold them without the girl making a penny.

Years ago I too fell for this scam. This guy named Doug Young from an agency called Midwest Models would ask women to come in for "test shoots". These shoots were nude and he said he would pay if you photographed well. I did it, then he claimed I wasn't "respectful enough" to him. I never got paid but have long suspected he sold them. Since then I've never done a free test shoot. If a guy wants to see how you photograph and he is legit, ask for a clothed test shoot. This will tell you whether he's legit or just a guy with a camera.

LOL I knew it was going to be "Gent"...... actual more like LMAO

Beware. They do will video. They will use the pics & video on the web as well for the magazine. They will use the photos multiple times in the mags. They will have you sign a release form where they own the all rights to the pics & videos. So they can and will resell the content.

I was the cover of April 2006 issue. Which I did for trade. I had use of the pics for my site too. Magazines whether it be Playboy or whatever don't make money anymore. That is status quo for the whole magazine industry adult or otherwise. The web has killed that business.

Doing magazine work, getting in them being on the cover and so what is more of bragging rights or ego strokers in my honest opinion. By-the-way I have over 20 magazine covers and been in 100s. Like "Voluptous & XLGirls" for the Score Group, "Penthouse", "Big Butt", "Plumpers" and "Gent". Thus I am speaking for experience.

I say do it. You get the 1st copy free, but then can buy at a much lower price a bunch to sell online or to fans.

Just beware Antone or Rhianna may change the rules of the shoot when you get there and insist that you have to do hardcore for free. They do that to many newbie models. Taking advantage to them being new. They tried to do this to me the 2nd time I went to shoot for them. Needless to say I didn't do the 2nd shoot.

If you have to pay for airfare and hotel to do it. Then don't bother. It isn't worth it.

It would be a fun shoot to do. For they have been in the adult industry for years.. Listen to the stories and learn alot.

Be true to yourself and never do what you are not comfortable doing.

DON"T! I shot for them and they do pressure for hardcore. My limits is pinka and toys and g/g and they wanted me to do b/g, resell the content over and over and not give you any free magazine copies. NO WAY. I got published but the exposure it is not worth it. If was PB hell yeah I would do since become a PB model will get you exposure and paid gigs as well bragging rights...

Go to a store that sells adult mags. Buy several that have gals in them with similar body type as you. There will be an email address or website for new models to apply.

But no longer do mags just do mags. They all have websites & dvds. They all will want you to do video.

    www.BeAScoremodel.com

Pay ranges due to your limitations.
Companies in LA will not pay for your travel.
Companies in Miami will if they like your look.

Life is funny. A "Big Butt" shoot I did in Dallas. Lead to a "Penthouse" shoot in LA So you never know who has power or who is all talk into you get into it and learn the ropes.

    Solo $100 to $400
    girl/girl $200 to $800
    boy/girl $500 to $1500

Rates depend on how HOT you are.
They all want fresh new meat. Meaning never shot porn before.

Make no mistake, it is all porn.

    Good Luck,
    Sam
