    Default Remembering 9/11

It started as just another day. For me, it was another subway ride to another breakfast meeting. For others, it was just another day at work. But of course, it turned out to be anything but just another day.

At 8:46 AM, the first plane hit. At that moment, we thought it was simply a horrible accident. It wasn’t until the second plane hit the South tower, 17 minutes later, that we knew that this was something more.

From where I stood in the street some 40 blocks away in Midtown, great plumes of smoke could be seen. People were frozen in the streets, unable to comprehend what was happening. It was only when most of us made it to televisions that we learned that the North and South towers had been hit and that this was likely the act of terrorists.

I was not back on the streets until after the first plane struck. The breakfast event was being held in Midtown, but the firm hosting this breakfast had offices in the World Trade Center and, upon learning about the first crash, cancelled the event. They were dazed and confused and were trying feverishly to obtain any information that they could. In retrospect, their attendance at this breakfast probably saved their lives. Also, their decision to hold it outside of their offices may have saved the lives of the event attendees, including mine.

For most of the day, trains and busses were completely shut down. People were walking across bridges just to get out of Manhattan. Cell phone service was unavailable. Manhattan looked more empty than I have ever seen it during a weekday, with many of the restaurants and other businesses closed. But on the flip side, people were as kind to each other as I have ever seen. Conversations were held in hushed tones and not a laugh could be heard anywhere. It was simply a surreal day.

I will never forget 9/11, including the many kind and heroic acts that occurred on that day. Also, while I was fortunate not to lose a loved one in the attack, I know many who did and my heart aches with all of the loss that I witnessed as a result of these attacks.

May God have mercy on the souls of all of those involved, and may God also forgive me for hoping to Hell that our military does not.
