    Default Pole tricks!

So, I pretty much a newb - I've been dancing for about 3 months now. I can do some pretty basic spins, but I would love to learn some more advanced pole tricks. It gets kind of boring (for me, at least) doing the same few spins over and over again. I would also like to learn some better "stage diving" moves. I've had custies compliment me on my stage show, but I'm more of the slow, sensual type dancer (out of necessity), and I would love to be able to do some of those cool attention-getting tricks.
If you are one of the awesome pole trickers: First of all, kudos on your skillz! I, for one, am jealous. Seriously, though, how did you learn your moves? I know that pole dancing classes are in vogue right now, but strippers have been figuring this stuff out long before that. Plus, I'd feel kind of silly paying for access to a pole when I can use one any night I'm at work.

If the slow sensual thing is working for you, you don't really have to learn the fancy tricks, it won't really affect your earnings. Knowing a few little spins and tricks is more than a lot of girls and will be fine to get by on.

That being said if you're like me and just addicted to being on the pole and want to know every trick there is then be prepared for aching muscles, multiple bruises in places you didn't think could bruise and blisters on your fingers (tip: don't wear jewelery - especially rings - while pole dancing). I've been doing this 3 years and still get bruised from learning new moves or when I take some time off.

How did I learn? Looked up youtube clips and found a few favourite performers and watched their clips over and over again, trying to analyse and figure out there moves. Then when I was at work if there were no guys in or at least no one spending I'd be up there practicing, I worked in some pretty dead clubs and this sometimes meant 4-5 hours of learning through trial and error.

If there's girls there that know tricks you want to learn you could try asking, if you're lucky they'll be like me and happily offer to help you out, though this isn't very common in my experience. You could offer to pay a girl to teach you at the club when it's quiet, that should work out cheaper than paying for lessons and use downtime at work.

You've only been doing it a few months though so be patient, you can't expect to just learn really advanced tricks. I'm the best pole dancer at my club and have girls who can barely climb it asking me to teach them moves I've only just learned - not gonna happen. Takes months or years to build up the muscle you need.

If you can afford it having an x-pole in your house is worth it and better then a gym. But if you're trying to keep your dancing a secret this might not be the best idea.

Anyway good luck! And start taking arnica (helps the bruises fade quicker).

Thanks - I've already been getting some pretty killer bruises, because my skin hasn't really had time to toughen up yet. I don't mind them, except for how they look. I love arnica - it not only helps heal faster but also helps with the soreness. I've also been told to start taking iron supplements to help with bruising. I think this a probably a pretty good idea.
Btw- do you do any exercises at home (w/o an actual pole) to help build up the muscle you need for pole tricks? If so, what do you do?

I do stretches at home because flexibility will make your moves look nicer and there's a few kick-ass tricks you can do with the splits, it's good to do 5-6 minutes of moving stretches to get the blood moving and the limbs warned up then 15-40mins static stretches where you hold each stretch for a minute.

All my muscle building is on the pole, when I started I'd just try and pull up with my arms - even if I couldn't get my feet off the ground - and hold for as long as possible. Same thing with leg holds and any new grip you learn. Push-ups are meant to be good as well.

Flaxseed oil is another good one, helps the muscles repair quicker. Good luck with your poling, it's hard work but if you love it it's worth it

Like Amareth I learned from working on really really dead nights. Just playing around on the stage with other girls. I also bought a pole and looked up youtube clips. I'm actually really good on the pole but I never do it on stage anymore because at my club guys don't really tip on stage so why waste my energy? The only time I break out the moves is if there's a really big group of young guys sitting right by the stage.

Indeed--the pole is quite addictive!! First of all, you have to be patient. You can't expect to learn how to walk before you know how to crawl, right? Give yourself time--please, please, please learn the basics before you attempt to learn the more advanced tricks--it will not only make your pole trcks look fluid, but you will also help you in being able to avoid falling. Youtube is great as a reference--but believe me, every pole dancer is different and as you beecome more experienced (and more comfortable) you will start to 'create' your own tricks.

Most importantly--have fun!! You are *always* learning something new!!

    Iron supplements are your friend.
Climb the pole constantly. It will build up your strength. Sit on the pole, lean back. This will get you used to being upside down. Sit back up. Those are pole sit-ups. Your abs will get tighter and help you invert. Plus, your thighs will get used to gripping the pole. Expect bruises. Thigh high boots will help you grip, too but the only thing is once you start wearing them, you have to kind of wean yourself off cause when you wear regular heels, you are going to feel EVERYTHING.

PLEASE don't work on your stage-diving! There is never a reason for giving away free lapdances when you should be advertising yourself as the sort of fun, sexy person who would make a fantastic Champagne room companion!

Anyway, as others have said, becoming a strong and exciting pole dancer is a process of trial-and-error that will probably take a year or so. Just remember to take care of your body, work on your upper-body strength, and have a particular move in mind that you want to work on each shift.

I HATE stage-dives!!! Why give a public lapdance for 5$ when you can make 20$ in the back? I think it's just trashy.

I loove pole dancing. That's why I started stripping, actually. It wasn't until recently that I noticed just how much muscle I have. I've started doing more and more tricks. I do a lot of combos, as well, and they're pretty awesome.

practicing at work is great. I love the feeling of learning new tricks and doing them for the first time. Soo much fun.

The whole stage diving thing is standard practice at both clubs I've danced at, and I've only recently seen the many posts from dancers that strongly object to it. I'm guessing this is a pretty new practice, but it seems pretty common nowadays.

I don't do any of those moves, and most likely never will - mainly because I'm a little clumsy and would probably hurt myself or someone else. Y'all bring up an excellent point, though, that these dancers aren't really making more in stage tips than I am. I always kind of figured it was a technique for selling private dances later - a kind of advertisment. In any case, stage diving doesn't offend me as much as it does some of you, but that's probably because I've never NOT been around it.

Pole tricks, on the other hand, are just fun. The pole-acrobats aren't making significantly more in stage tips either from what I can tell, but they are having a lot more fun on stage and usually have killer bodies from all the muscle tone it requires.

Thanks for all the tips, ladies. I'll be putting a lot of this good advice to use.
