    Default A question about credit?

Im going to post this in general and other work in hopes
someone who either works in the field/been through it can help.

when i was 17 , i got a horrible UTI and had to go to the ER
My mother took me and filled out all the papers , and i got medicine ect.
About a month after 9When i turned 1 i started getting the bill for it..
I never payed it beings i was 17 at the time , and didnt think they could
bill be for it beings my mother took me.

Now im getting my own apartment and im worried that it might have
    affected my credit.

Can they bill you if your a minor?
How fast would it start taking effect on my credit?

    MIGHT I ADD!
    This hospital is jank.
Its a 1 star hospital and has been almost shut down 5 times.
The staff if replaced , They are rude , Stupid , and the doctor
told my family member she was sick because "Her rotten teeth must be effecting her"
    In the RUDEST tone.
So it could have possibly been a mistake.

I only went there because it was indeed a emergency.

If I'm not mistaken in most places 17 is considered adult(here it is). Therefore yes it went on your credit. When you didn't pay it should have been turned over to collections. Most lanlords overlook medical bills. They look more for past evictions, credit card debt, stuff like that. You should be fine. Especially if you can offer to pay at least 3x's rent!! They'll overlook almost anything then.

Hun that doesn't mean anything!!! Once my sister went to the ER,she was 17. They made me turn all the way around to go and get my mother(I had left my cell). I was sooo pissed, hell I'm 22,why couldn't I just sign her in?? No,as long as you're not 18,you're not considered legal. However they can take you to jail and try you as an adult in court, when you're 17. Doesn't make any sense, but yes my sis has a $1500 medical charge on her credit.

check your credit report. i have an old medical bill on my report that i'd not gotten any paperwork for through the mail and actually forgotten about, and it's supposedly gone to collections (funny, since they never call me, but it's good to know so i can pay it off). but it'll definitely show up on your credit report - get one of your yearly free ones and check once you know for sure, then you can call the hospital and talk to them about it if you think it's a mistake, or report it to the credit bureau as a mistake.

The "good" thing about (most) medical bills is even though they will reflect negatively on your credit report, the damage from them is not as significant as other bills like credit cards or defaulted loans. So if those hospital bills are the only thing holding you back then you shouldn't have much to worry about in terms of significant credit damage. (except how to pay them off of course)

Yes it would. They don't care how much it was/is. They only care that it went into collections. You did actually see it on your report right? Don't want to have all of this worrying over nothing!!

December is a long time. If they just started sending you bills again, than more than likely, they're trying to see if you will pay BEFORE they turn you over. Actually who is the letter from? If it says the name of the ER,then you have nothing to worry about. Go ahead and take care of it before it gets on our credit. If it says "this is an attempt to collect a debt for *****, from the department of collections",then its already on your credit. Yeah I've gotten a couple ER bills on my credit. Sucks!!

Oh if they're not in your name hun,you have nothing to worry about!! I thought the bills were in your name. If they have your moms name in the "billed to" section. Then it will go on her credit, not yours. If they come in your name, they'll be on your credit. Make sense??

morally it's only 200 dollars... cmon

But also there is a statue of limitations on debt, I think it's 7 yr in texas. If they havent gotten anything out of you in 7yrs the debt is null and void. If you give them a lil bit of money to placate them it resets the counter

I don't think the amount matters. Could be $200 or $2,000!! A debt is still in fact a debt. She's young with a husband and child. Her credit does matter...

OH and also you can usually settle medical debt for pennies on the dollar. If you call them and say "I have $50 and I want to do the right thing but thats all I got" they can send you a letter saying they will accept $50 as SETTLEMENT IN FULL <<< has to say that. Credit cards are the same way

Did you try posting this in 'Dollar Den'? Melonie is always posting there and she has good financial knowledge.

Nahh hehe , Ive forgotten about it ,
The bill i found isnt in my name , My name is ON the bill
But looks like its just telling my mother what the charge was for.

    Like..
    Its listed
    To : D****** B******
    D******* B******* - 900
    ---K****** W******* -900 PN 9865765

And i tried to check my credit , But it kept coming back
unable to proses. Witch it said it did that when a person
had brand new credit, So im guessing it had no bed marks
beings it was brand new previously.

I think I read in another thread that you were married at 16, right? I'm pretty sure (at least in most states) that would make you an adult. If that is the case, then yeah, it would be on your credit, assuming it went to collections.

There is a way around it.. Depending on where you're from, the hospital probably reported to one of the three credit bureaus (Transunion, Experian, Equifax). Go to www.annualcreditreport.com and get your credit reports from all three bureaus. It's free. Don't go to www.freecreditreport.com. You can dispute the charges. They give a list of reasons, and one of them should be "I am not responsible for this account" or something to that effect. Just click on that as the reason. Honestly, I don't think they are going to do *that* much research and find out that you were married and technically not a minor anymore. It's worth a shot.

    Ladies, credit is SO important!
There are two parts to credit; getting rid of the bad stuff (if any), and building new credit.
Of course, there's so much more, but in general that's what you need to do.
To learn ALL about credit (not just Dave Ramsey's way which is good, but advises people to never have debt at ALL, which is not always feasible nor smart) go to www.creditboards.com, and go to the forums. You can learn a TON!
And yes, if you haven't pulled your free credit reports yet, go to the link someone gave above and send away for all three of them. Have them mailed to you, not downloaded. Apparently, there is often much more information in the hard copies.
Remember, every year all the CRAs are required to give everyone who requests them, a free credit report. Get them and use them to your advantage!
