I think that would work. What I do is keep my laptop hanging off the edge of the table a bit so the fan can intake and blow out the air. Be careful with this though. Ironically, I broke the fan for letting the laptop tip over and falling hard, so I ordered a new laptop basically the same with more processing power.
Targus is a really good brand for those thingies. It's a little more costly, but they're excellent coolmakers.

I recommend Belkin! Used one at my vanilla job working hardcore programs that shouldn't be run on a laptop, and now I use it for camming!

So if you want to be with me
With these things there’s no telling
We just have to wait and see
But I’d rather be working for a paycheck
Than waiting to win the lottery
Besides maybe this time is different
I mean I really think you like me

make sure your cooling fans are big enough or have multiple fans under your laptop.

What dixie said - !
I swear by belkin. In fact the fan in a couple of my laptops went completely , and belkin external fan saw me never having burnout ... I appreciate it's not the way to go , but if your internal fan/s working , then a belkin external will most certainly keep you a cool kid !
@ teebaby - Ha ha ha ha , Unlucky , done many similar moves myself , trying to save something only to end up destroying it completely in the process !

You might have to get your fans cleaned. Over time, dust accumulates in laptop fans (which are not as powerful as desktops' are to begin with) and your laptop get overheated easily and often. You can try to buy compressed air and do it with that, but if the dust turned into sticky mass, you might have to take it to someone to open it and clean it out.

I had the same problem with my old computer. I got a Belkin off ebay (used though) and couldn't use it because it made way too much sound. It only has one fan though. Otherwise, it worked.
For awhile I propped up my old computer on books and if I set my fan exactly so I didn't get any complaints for clients. So makeshift! I ended up getting a new laptop all together.

The cooling pad will help a lot, I sit my smaller laptop on a mesh letter tray (the kind you use for sorting paper on a desk) and it helps the air flow with no problem.
do you have an HP Compaq? they are famous for overheating. My roomate had one with the same problem I should have known better but I bought one too! I've totally had my computer overheat and die during a show, worst thing is you have to let it cool down and can't even log back on to tell the customer what happened!
I tried those flat fan cooling things but it didnt work. I do it the cheap ghetto way haha...I prop it up with check book boxes, slanted on opposite corners. It works GREAT! if u dont have those, two phonebooks set to the side work too. anything so that there is airflow under your laptop.
no you can go get your fan cleaned or use the cooling fan, it will help a little, but I found propping it up on checkbook boxes or books is what works best. Really I just want a new computer, it crashes a lot too! it was a gift but like 3 years ago... i def will not get another hp laptop

Yep my computer that overheated was an HP.
Yea, that will def. work, my cousin uses it with his dell! Honestly, PC's always seem to overheat from my experience (Dells, HPs) aren't they the two top brands? Anyways I never had a problem like this with my mac!! Best investment ever!
