Default excercise, the gym and distractions....

Now I have a feeling I am not the only one that has experienced this though I may be wrong but...

Anyone ever stop going to a gym or such because of the distraction factor? I know that I'm not the hottest thing out there but I do hold my own. I keep toned and know I have a pretty kicking body. (5' 105 lbs on an enhanced 34F-23-32 chassis) I used to have no problem sporting the stereotypical gym attire (sportsbra and "butt shorts" but I can't go more than 10 minutes without some "philanthropic" guy asking if I need help or something.... I am by no means stuck up or a prude but like most I go to the gym to work out and not socialize. I have tried working out at home but there is a certain motivation that goes along with a gym workout. Oh well... I guess I will deal with snyde flares from gals and humorous male encounters.

Haha. Valid point. And I do do that as well. But in Boston it kinda the norm as well. Although the "girls" are the girls and if I can ask do many women still have baggy t shirts?? I mean I will admit I do still like to look kinda cute. Lol.

i hate that and at the gym the last thing i want is to get hit on or something. ug. When I'm at the gym im in my own zone and i find it kind fo relaxing. So I ware a regular t-shirt and leggings, minimal/no makeup and i usually pick a machine away from tons of people or keep my ipod in. I understand your "mini rant" lol
I have also mastered my "in the zone" speech that I give at the casino or the gym if some guy trys talking to me.. I look up, get the most serious look on my face and kind of firmly state "I'm in THE ZONEEEE" lol they usually leave me alone after that lol

Yess!!! Whenever I go to the gym, I wear basic black pants and a tank top... I dont like being botherd, so shorts or a smaller shirt is a big no for me, as men already stare and I cant stand it.

But anyway... I love hitting the machines, putting my ear phones on, having a TV right infront me.. seeing some guy beside me pump it out, seeing someone across running until they are passing out.. It makes me even work harder. Whoever sits beside me, I take it as a game and I want to beat them, I want to work out harder. It does make work out harder and not quit. I notice when I work out at home, Im not as intense to the gym setting.

I stopped going, because 1. the staff, people were snobs all drove high end cars and thought they were better than everyone 2. I hate being checked out, it makes me nervous.
What I do is wear pants and a tank... wearing shorts and a bra will DEFF get you looks no matter what and guys will bother you. I take my music and put in ear phones EVEN when Im not listening to music, guys never bothered me as I pretend im listening to music! Dont stare around and look lost... or men will start thinking you are there to say hello, focus on your work out, don't acknowledge them, be nice, then walk away.

I know I know. I do try to be as nice as possible when approached and I also play the ear phones game. It seems to work best. (Works well in the grocery store too. Haha)

You are so right about competing too. It helps me sooooo much. I never stand around. I race myself to try to complete my workout too. In and out faster than the last time. But still without fail there is always a gawker. Oh well.

And team. I think I'm going to adopt the yoga pants for the gym and tanks or similar as well but they're hard to hide (those that were a bit over zealous on the NA will understand)

Bit off subject but anyone else get a kick out of noticing the lil chubbers?? LOL.

I occasionally get approached at the gym. Unless it is an employee... I don't even look at them. Don't take my headphones out of my ears... just say "Please leave now."

I tone it down a lot at the gym. No makeup, hair in a ponytail. I can't stand baggy gym clothes so I will wear leggings or yoga pants with a full coverage tank top and sports bra underneath. I understand that it's more comfortable to be wearing shorts and a sports bra when it's hot, but it also means more of your body is gonna be touching the gym equipment..and I'm a germophobe so hence more coverage.

I'm not saying you are like this, but I just had a conversation with my friend not too long ago about dudes perving out at the gym. She wears full on booty shorts and a tank top with her ta-ta's hanging out + stripper makeup to the gym and then complains about creepy guys checking her out. And I'm like ...... gee uh, I can't think of a reason why.

Then again, it doesn't matter what we wear, men are gonna stare either way. Damn it.

EARPHONE GAME FOR SURE!!!! Then if they really bother you to "help" you, say "Oh that sucks I'm doing this wrong! Why don't you send a trainer over here for me, your'e treat! Thank you so much!"

Oh and if they say "oh I can train you, I got blah blah experience" you say "I'm pretty sure the gym has a policy against that" (most gyms do)

Haha. Your friend is funny. And yeah I was kinda that girl too. I hate hate hate baggy clothes. Especially gym clothes. Not comfortable and just all around feels funny. And for someone that could still shop at gap kids (mostly Haha) finding clothes is a challenge enough. Tank and cute T's always become fitted. But alas, toned down or not. Boys get kinda dumb when around little gals with fake boobs and clingy sweaty clothes...

    Lacey,

They have some all girl gyms now. . at least in New York. I think that would make it a lot easier to concentrate on your workout and not be distracted by anoying dudes. I joined a gym in NY called David Barton. Lets just say that the guys that are work out in that gym are not paying attention to me. .they are paying attention to the other guys.

I, for one, would never go to an all-female gym. I quite enjoy the scenery at my co-ed gym...

There are definitely advantages to an all female gym. I have tried one. But I just didn't like it. Ughh.

Well where I went the members were mostly upper class or upper management types that are of or around my mothers age. Not that's bad but I really didn't feel welcome there.

I'm more motivated if I'm training around the opposite sex...AND, like I said, I like watching the sweaty men with their pumped up muscles competing for my attention. It's an ego stroke and I like it. NOW, I am an ipod girl at the gym, and I'm there to work. I never turn my music off and I never talk. I just like the, shall we say, "atmosphere" of a gym with men in it.

And frankly, I don't like most women that much, so an all-female gym sounds like hell to me. I don't think belonging to that type of gym would really cut down on the glares from other women... they are doing that because they are insecure with themselves or jealous that they aren't as hot as you Training around a bunch of soft, middle-aged, overweight women is not going to motivate me. If you want to improve yourself or get in better shape, you need to be around people that are in better shape than you are!

But anyways, that's just my .02

I have found that sunglasses help a lot with this kind of thing. Not the light lens ones that let people see your eyes. The dark ones are best. When people can't make direct eye contact it lessens, at least makes me feel like, the chance that they will try to strike up a conversation. I've been doing it for years and noticed that without them more people will attempt to have a full conversation and with them people will just speak and keep going.
Thank Goodness I smartened up! The old me is dead and gone.

I completely understand where you are coming from. I don't even have that ideal body and the gym is still an uncomfortable place to be. I love working out but hated the other people there. In my little city (Greensboro) I found a high-end gym that focuses on family and comfortableness. I don't have children but I felt at home in this gym because of the atmosphere. I would recommend trying a different type of search for the 'right' gym. The one I go to is through word of mouth only and I was lucky enough to have my PT tell me about it. Try the yellow pages verses the internet to find a right gym, and if it is going to be the right gym for you they will give you anywhere from 10-30 days free, not 5 days. Working out in a place that has a dress code, child care and a phenomenal upper-class atmosphere has worked wonders for me and so far 3 other girls in my club have joined. Ask around, i hope you find a place that suits your needs.

I dont like gyms and I therefore do not go. I do pilates, use a stairstepper, elliptical, and do several other exercises from the comfort and privacy of my own home. Its great..when I am not at work I dont want to deal w attention from others or their stupid bs. I know that sounds mean but i dont care..it works for me.

I hated the all female gym I briefly went to because it was filled with people who seemed like they weren't really even working out. It was just, like, social hour.

20 million girls on the elliptical and on the bikes or on machines using weights that clearly weren't a challenge based on how they were laughing and carrying on and chatting away, and I'm the only one in the free weights lifting anything more than 5 pounds.

If it's the chain I'm thinking of, then their hours are pretty beat too. (Majority of locations closed on Sundays, and at noon or something on Saturdays?) Is that the one?
