    Duh Joint pain!!

So everyone warned me about my knees when I started working (I have worked 4 days now). They said I would be bruised and swollen. I am bruised a little, but most of my pain is coming from my knee joints! Does anyone have suggestions? I want to start icing after my shifts, and taking baths with epsom salts. The day after I work I always feel like I was hit by a truck...totally stiff, sore, and exhausted. Is this something that improves over time, or do you just get used to it? Thanks girls!

Stretch before and after shifts. Stay hydrated by drinking a few cups of non alcoholic liquid through your shift so you aren't dehydrated and lactic acid can't build up in your muscles. Avoid stage wok that involves being on your knees and if you have to climb stairs, or stand up repeatedly place your hand on your knee to be sure you don't over extend it. A doctor custie told me that years ago and saved me a ton of wear and tear. Oh and glucosamine chondroitin helps the joints too!

I'm stating back dancing after being on a little personal vacation for 4 months, so I'm actually going through all of this stuff again too.

By joint pain, do you mean stiffness/soreness/feeling tender? Or sharp pain? If it's a sharp or tearing pain then be careful, you could do some serious damage (like tearing your Meniscus). If it's the soreness/stiff feeling and you're able to extend your leg, then it's just the same aches and pains we all go through when we start dancing.

Take Ibuprofen for the inflammation, and put ice on your knees initially to bring down any minor swelling. Hot baths with epsom salts are soothing. I was recently reminded to start applying Arnica gel to my sore areas (it's a homeopathic remedy for bruising and swelling). You can also get pills to take orally. The gel really does make a difference.

The best advice I can give when you start dancing is really just general 'good health' advice. Start taking a Muti-vitamin if you don't already, that just tends to generally help with your feeling of well-being. Drink lots of water throughout the day, and the day after your shift; very important if you're dancing heavily (sweating a lot) or drinking alcohol. Eat well. Rest a lot - get that 8 hours of sleep, but don't stay in bed all day; stretching is important. Even if you feel like total shit, try and get up out of bed and take a little walk around and do some light stretching - it will help.

This is something we all go through, you'll get used to dancing soon and you won't feel like this after every shift. You'll always feel a little sore here and there, but the 'being hit by a truck' feeling you mentioned does go away.

I swear by glucosamine... I have horrible knees from miles of running in the military, and for some reason, every so often, its so bad that I cannot even get out of bed, my knees are so painful, and sometimes no pain, theyd just be lethargic like...where my knees would just give out on me out of the blue.

I got the tip to try gluscosamine, and after trying out a few things, Utrition Liquid Liquid Joint Repair and that worked miracles...after just about a week I had no joint pain and after 2 months of having it everyday I havnt had joint problems since...its been over a year now.

    It tastes pretty good too...

I have joint pain baaaaadd. But I have patellafemoral syndrome.

Regardless, things that help me should help you as well.
    Glucosamine and Chondroitin will help.
Stay OFF you knees as much as possible for the stage.
When you do bend you knees, try your best to keep your knee in line with you 2nd toe.
Stretch your IT band to keep it from pulling too much on your kneecap. You can google good stretches for this. As well, foam rolling will help.
Epsom salt baths, ALEVE or other NSAIDS like Advil, and ARNICA will help relieve the pain. Avoid ASPIRIN because it's a blood thinner and can increase bruising.

However, know your own health. if any of the advice has contraindications with anything you take or do, don't take the advice.

    Feel better!

Dancing will definately kill your knees, not to mention your back... After awhile you get dancer skin.. you still bruise but the bruises will be invisible..lol. But all the suggestions you named are pretty much it. Dont over do it just in case you have small muscle tears and be sure to drink plenty of water. It takes the acid out of the muscles...

Papillionluvr is right about the glucosamine/chondroitin. I use this myself -because after years of doing this my joints in general are needing some help.

You can get it in pill form or drink form at Walgreens in the supplement isle. I use it in drink form once a day. They come in different fruit juice flavors & stuff also.

Thanks ladies! You have all been so helpful. I've noticed that every time I dance I recover a little more quickly. So that's good! I'm taking glucosamine, and using arnica gel...as well as taking them orally. Icing and all that good stuff.
