Default How old were you when you started drinking?

I was 18, and I pretty much had no control on it, My only goal was to get shit faced

Would you buy a bottle of 42proof alcohol for your younger sibling? (age 15).
My sister is going away for the weekend and asked for a bottle, I'm going to buy it but I'm wondering where people stand on this situation, how young is too young, would you do it too?

I started early. When I was teething my parents put whiskey on my gums to stop my crying and there is a photo of me around age 2 holding a beer. I am a drunk from way back.

To get shit-faced is probably her goal too. Where exactly is a 15 year old "going away" to? Somewhere where she will basically be on lockdown, around people who could help if things go badly, or just kinda out and about with friends where she could get caught/get herself into trouble? I personally didn't really even care to drink until I was about 19-20. My older sister even tried to get me into it and I just had no interest, but I know that most people start young and end up fine. I don't know if I would necessarily want to be one to facilitate it though... turn the other cheek maybe, but I would be too worried about things going badly and being my fault (either for legal or emotional reasons) if I was the one to provide alcohol for someone who I know isn't really old enough to handle it responsibly. I hated even having highschoolers were technically 18 at parties at my house because I felt like shit would go seriously dark if they fucked up, and they never had control over themselves. (I know realistically I could get into just as much trouble for a 19 or 20 year old, but I guess just knowing that they still lived with their parents made it seem like there would be worse consequences if something went wrong and the parents went crazy). She's your sister, so you know better than anyone if you can trust her to be safe and what you're doing, but I personally don't like the responsibility of providing younger people with alcohol.

We will see, i'm putting my trust in her to not be stupid, she says they will just be in her friends room with her friends parents in the other room, all I can do is hope she's not too stupid, I just told her not to die and i'll be happy lol, I think she'll be fine, part of me thinks it was a bad idea but I also know how it is at that age, you can be somewhat responsible at 15.

@kelly, lol my parents did the same thing with whiskey on my gums... They didn't take pics of me holding beers though

It's for two 15-year old girls

I would rather the person she deals with to buy her alcohol be her brother who can also give her advice on not being too stupid and not some random guy they pay on the street, once you hit a certain age and want something, you're going to get it anyway.

The first time I recall tasting liquor I was 4... my dad gave me beer while he was watching a movie because I kept telling him that I wanted something to drink. He just wanted me to be quiet & unconsciously handed me his beer can. Oddly, I don't remember him ever drinking beer after that.

As I grew up my mom was always on these kicks about having a "glass of wine everyday", so I'd get in trouble if I didn't. That was based on the old belief that it cut down on chances of cancer. Do people even still believe that?

Around 12 I could pretty much have wine coolers or whatever. Actually my mom got in trouble once at a Mexican restaurant trying to get me to take a sip of her margarita. I was super shy & total goody two shoes, so I was resisting because we were in public. The bartender heard her trying to convince me & told her to knock it off before he made her leave!

I will drink now, but it's VERY rare. I'm just not into the taste of liquor, so it has to be super sweet. I also really hate how people tend to act when drunk, or how I feel when tipsy, so I avoid drinking too much.

first real time i had major booze i was 15, on a school trip to italy where it was just me an a bunch of 18 year olds. we found a small club near the hotel where the booze was cheap. had a lot of vodka cokes, learnt to smoke and ended up puking in the hotel toilet. good times.

but seriously, alcohol is something everyone's gotta learn for themselves. everyone has to go thru those moments of drinking too much, its just part of life. does that mean u should enable it? course not. but u shouldnt try to keep your sister from it either. if i were u id get some basic alcohol (wine, beer, etc.) and tell her to stay aware of how drunk she is. if its her first time drinking she wont need the hard stuff to feel it anyway.

oh, if your gonna provide the alcohol id also recommend putting yourself forward as available if something goes bad. u should essentially take responsibility for everything they get up to.

Alcohol was always around in my family. My parents had a bit of a drinking problem, but it was kinda normal for where I grew up. I was allowed to have beer or wine with dinner from a young age, and becasue of that I was never really into it (I'd rather have a sugary soda than icky beer as a child).

When I was - god, I think 12? Maybe 13 - my mother dressed me up and took me downtown with some of her girlfriends and got me totally shit-faced. I thought I was SOOO cool, and drank and drank and drank - I probably had more liquor that night that I've consumed in any one night since. Of course, the next day I had the WORST hangover. Woke up still drunk, and was sick for a good 3 days after that.

My crazy mothers intention all these years later is VERY clear; Alcohol isn't that great. Since then I've never been a big drinker, maybe getting a bit tipsy 3-4 nights a year at most. Recently I've started drinking again at work to calm my nerves though, so I'll come back here and post about how that's going in a few months. lol.

I say, as long as you know your sister will be in a house and safe; go get her that booze. A lot of it. Hopefully her hangover will dampen her enthusiasm for alcohol the same way it did mine. Then again, maybe it won't.

The first time I had anything more than a sip of alcohol was on my 17th birthday. I don't think I ever got really seriously wasted until I was around 20, though.

I had sips of beer and wine when I was like 11 or 12. I was at a party and one of my dads co-workers (who was drunk) kept giving me sips of her drink. I had alcoholic drinks at a few other of my parents' work parties since then. I got wasted for the first time when I was 19.

I started at 16. By 19 I was full blown binge drinking and by 21 full blown alcoholic. By 30 I was drinking 24/7 and by 38 I was in intensive care on life support (the first of 2 times).

This year is my 9th year Clean and Sober.

I think it's a bad idea. Not only illegal but it's reckless endangerment.

I agree with the people who say don't buy a 15 year-old girl alcohol. It's pretty idiotic and irresponsible ... at least ask her parents' and her friends parents' out of respect. If the dad/older brother of your sisters friend go after you with a baseball bat, you probably deserve it.

Default Re: How old were you when you started drinking?

I started drinking at 13 and got drunk for the first time at, well, 13. There was very little (read "almost no") parental supervision in my life or in the lives of the the friends I was drinking with for that matter. We would get "some random guy [we] pay[ed] on the street" to buy alcohol for us. Here's the thing, it does make it harder to get and therefore it requires more time, effort and thought if you say "no" to buy it for them, and in my opinion that's a good thing.

I spent a year in Europe a few years later and the view on drinking is very different (and more healthy, IMHO) there. I, as a 16 year old, could buy liquor in the grocery store and I would drink with my host-parents and in general, people there did not drink to get shit-faced like they do in North America. (Just my experience.)
The difference from there to here is that we were drinking with adults (ie. supervised) and they could keep an eye on our habits and see if things were out of hand etc and therefore we could have a dialogue about drinking which I think is important.

I suggest getting the girls to talk to their parents. Taking it into your own hands is a bad idea. You could even offer to talk to your parents with your sister if you believe strongly in your stance on the issue. I think it's good that your sister can come to you, but you should use this as an opportunity to start a dialogue about drinking etc, not to give in to the whim of a child who is looking to rebel.

Oh, and as for me personally I no longer drink AT ALL. I quit drinking completely 3 years ago.

I don't see the big deal? Depending on if she is close to 16 or not, in a year she can legally go to war.

Drinking age in London is 5 years old

Also just to add, some people here can be very rude and judgmental, talking about his little sister being some guys little fuckdoll?
You people need to grow up, there is a way to get your point across without being rude to someone, if you think it is a bad idea fine, save the insults for a forum that's not about women taking their clothes off for strangers, we don't judge you.

I was allowed a half a glass of wine at dinner on holidays starting when I was 12. I didn't actually get drunk until I was 16. Though I did consume alcohol at parties, I was a sipper because I was afraid of acting like an asshole (pride: it keeps you in check sometimes).

I didn't drink or get drunk regularly until I was about 25. I was young, divorced, and felt for the first time it was MY life, and I could do what I want. I drank essentially suicidal amounts of liquor until I met my current husband.

It started with vodka and orange juice. I'd have 5 a night at work. Then that didn't work, so I upped it to 7. Then 10. After I got bored of those, it was vodka and tonic. Few months later, I didn't have patience for mixed drinks, so I moved to shots of vodka. Vodka started taking too much, so I moved to tequila. Tequila worked for about a year, then when my tolerance increased again, I moved on to whiskey. I seriously drank a bottle of whiskey every night for almost a year and a half; and my tolerance was so high that wouldn't even make me puke. I started out at 5'8" 120lbs, and in two years I was up to 145lbs from drinking and water retention. My hands shook so badly I couldn't put on my mascara until I'd had a shot.

Now, I get intoxicated with my husband once in awhile- less than once a month actually. I feel great now, I remember everything that happens in my nights, blah blah. My skin looks better, I don't have the shakes in the morning anymore, and I'm eating now (I used to "save" calories for alcohol. I wouldn't eat so I could drink and not consume more than 2,000 calories a day). I've lost 15lbs just from cutting that shit out. I'm not bloated anymore and I actually am pretty again.

Alcohol is a DRUG. I don't care what anyone says, being an alcoholic or binge drinking is just as harmful if not more harmful than any other drug out there. Just because it's legal, socially acceptable and the government can tax it doesn't mean it's harmless.

Don't buy the booze for this kid. You never know what kind of doors you can open.

    I didn't answer the OP's question.

My answer is a definite NO. I wouldn't buy alcohol for anyone 15 years old, or under the legal age limit (18 years here in the UK). You only have to look at our TV programmes to see how bad the drinking problems are in this Country. We have documentary/reality programmes about the Police, Ambulance Services etc etc all the time here - and the most common scenes are of thousands of shit-faced teenagers pouring out of nightclubs in towns and cities all over the UK....and either throwing up in the streets or picking fights with anyone who so much as looks at them.

They are ruining their own lives and their health, interfering with other people's lives and generally making fools of themselves....not to mention spending money they don't have. The only people who benefit are the nightclub owners, the Distillers and the Government, all of whom get the taxes and revenues from alcohol sales.
