Default Traveling - do you make enough?

So I'm looking into travel-dancing throughout the summer. There a few places I'd like to go. But in the middle of July, I will have to start paying rent and start paying for my own cell phone and all those glorious bills. At first, I thought traveling would be a good way to make money, but then I wondered if I would have enough to travel and pay bills. When you travel, do you end up having enough to pay for your travel expenses and be able to pay your bills at home?

So many factors go into this. How well u hustle, how well u can change your hustle to suit the club, which clubs/areas u go to, how much u spend while there, and if you're splitting the cost of wherever u go, or if u stay w a friend and don't have to pay for a hotel room.

Me, I do come home w a decent profit 90% of the time. The other 10% is because I'm too busy having fun and spending what I make almost as fast as I make it. ;-)

I danced 'on the road' for years ... and always had to plan trips carefully. Indeed there were times that the extra expenses involved with a road trip 'overwhelmed' the amount of money I was able to earn. Fortunately this did not happen often. When it did happen, it was usually related to a clubowner breaking a promise.

it depends on whether or not you have your own car, whether you have somewhere cheap to stay, whether or not you know that the club is in season and how smart you are with your money.

I was stupid about ALL of that until recently when I ditched the crazy girl I was traveling with. Suddenly the amount of money that I was making tripled and I was able to not have to deal with crazy problems that interfered with my business.

    a few tips:

    - if you're staying somewhere for a short period of time, ask if hotels / motels in the area do weekly rates. Usually you save a few days rent there and end up paying essentially half /day of what you would if you went individually. In places I have stayed, the weekly rate ends up actually making every day after the 4th free. Even if I was only staying 5 days out of 7 I would still do it.

    - if you're planning on staying somewhere for more than two weeks and you're paying more than 250$ /week see if you can find an apartment that will do month to month rent (or someone who is renting out a room). This can save you two weeks worth of rent money that you would be spending at a h/motel.

    - if you don't have a car and have to take taxis try to plan out your trips so you can do everything at once. If the mall is close to the grocery store, try to hit them both up at the same time so you don't end up having to make more than one trip to the same area.

    - go to Walmart and get yourself a single burner, a pan, a knife, plate, cutlery and whatever else you think you'll need to make a simple meal. Buy groceries as often as you have to and try to cook ALL your meals. This will seriously save you money. Think about how much you would spend on food if you were eating out all the time. Probably minimum 30$ /day plus how unhealthy it can be. Most rooms will have fridge and microwave so bonus there!

    - start doing your own nails and other simple beauty tasks. If you think about it, getting a mani / pedi can be 40 - 60$. While that doesn't seem like a lot at first think of it in bigger terms. If you get one every week that's 200$ (and that's assuming you're paying 40$). Buying some polish will save you a LOT of money. I also don't bother waxing - just shaving. That's a personal thing though so do what you're more comfortable with. However, less trips with a taxi, less money spent, more control over when you can remove the hair (you don't have to wait for it to grow in).

    - keep your distance from other girls. More so than you would at a club in your city / one you have been to before. You don't know what they're like, who are the psycho ones. The more distance you keep, the harder you will hustle (in my experience). Don't tell anyone where you're staying.

    - CHECK YOUR PHONE PLAN!! I kept on getting stuck with these huge bills but thought that it was from one thing when it was another thing. I felt like a huuuuuuge idiot when I finally called and asked them why the bill was so big. I made like, 20$ worth of changes and saved something like 300$ on my next bill. Seriously face-palm. That's a lot of money! I have free long distance now. So I can be anywhere and call anywhere. Free text / picture, voicemail, caller ID... look into plans and make sure you have one that works for you.

    - go to the bank often. It's much easier for people to steal from you when you are on the road. If you aren't going to the bank often then be SMART about where you hide your money. There was a thread on here recently about this.

aaaanyway. Best of luck if you do decide to travel. I learned all that stuff "the hard way" and hope that it helps you out right when you start.

I do make profit, but I can tell you that many things can effect how much profit. I'm not really the party girl type, & last year I took a booking where I worked 21 days straight.

The other two girls that posted here have mentioned a lot of what I would mention. The only thing that hasn't really been mentioned is that gas for your car can eat away at your profits fast, & that staying in one place for too long can also effect your profits. Your best bet is really to look at a map & plan out a trip to work in multiple cities for about 1 week at a time each, which would extend over the period of 1-2 months. You could drive back in between, which is what I do so I can see my kitties, but if you want to really want o maximize profits you'll want to stay on the road.

Another thing you might want to consider is asking your landlord if you could sublet your apartment while you are gone, which could help you to offset costs.

I have tried virtually every permutation in this regard ... and consistently determined that the lowest 'costs' highest 'earnings' formula was to drive my own car - to book three consecutive weeks in three different cities that were within reasonable driving distance of each other ( max 10 hours ). Thus I essentially made a big 'loop' that brought me home again during the 4th week - which was important since taking that 4th week 'off' allowed me to diet / work out / catch up on laundry, bill paying, family etc.

Obviously I also used to do 'road trips' of longer duration ... but to be very frank, after more than 3 weeks the 'bad side effects' began to affect my appearance, energy level, attitude etc. resulting in decreased earnings.

And I also used to do longer distance 'road trips' ... for which I also found a workable business model. The key to it was finding an editor / producer / clubowner that was willing to pay my air fare as part of a magazine / video / feature booking deal. I would then fly to a distant city on THEIR 'dime' for the first week's work ... and sandwich in an additional two weeks of 'road work' in nearby cities via a bargain basement rental car before flying home again.

Yup ... always worth a try ! I found that calling the specific hotel / motel directly ( rather than the corporate booking desk ) and talking to the manager usually got me a significant discount for a 5-6 night stay.

Yup I deliberately tried to book rooms that offered a fridge and microwave. And in addition to the cost savings, trying to 'eat healthy' while on the road is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT re energy level, weight / appearance etc. as I mentioned above. In fact, one of my favorite cost saving 'tools' for road trips was a 12v electronic 'cooler' ( with 120v adapter for use in hotel room ) which allowed me to take the first week's worth of 'perishables' along with me while I was on the road. Then the routine of driving to a different city and checking into a different hotel was also accompanied by a shopping trip to a local supermarket to restock another week's worth of 'perishables'. This 'discovery' was the result of finding that I simply wouldn't muster the energy to go grocery shopping mid-week if I ran out of something, invariably accepting offers to go out to breakfast after the club closed - eating 'take out' food in the club etc., but inevitably 'paying the price' via weight gain / energy level drop !!!

Yup again ... 'out-of-town' dancers too easily can become victims for being ripped off / blamed for some drama issue / falsely accused / offered up as a sacrificial lamb to local LE etc. The less familiarity you establish with the house dancers the better !!!

Yes, to everything they have said, but repeat DO NOT TELL ANYONE WHERE YOU ARE STAYING! Even if they say, I'm staying there too. Don't let the club recommend a place for you where they get a deal. All club regular and pb's will know traveling girls stay there and you don't wanna be there. Also, if you travel girls might try to have you robbed or tell customers. Not everybody who looks nice is nice. The "nice" girl at your club might be a pillbilly chick who'll do whatever to get high including watching you make $ and then directing her bf to your room after hours. I've seen it happen so many times in parking lots of hotels/restaurants. DO NOT go to the nearest place to eat by your club that other girls go. If there is a waffle house across the street, you go to the one a couple miles or exits down and eat alone. Girls always asked why I wouldn't eat near the club and it finally got robbed here, but they just hit the register. If this were Mphs or ATL they would have hit the register then robbed every chick because they know dancers go to eat across the street after work. It's happened several times in both places near clubs.
Thank Goodness I smartened up! The old me is dead and gone.
