    Default Dilemma...On My Own

Okay, So my parents have taken my car because I have been working a few night shifts...and there is a bunch of other baggage that is behind this matter. However, I think it is time to become indepent. I am looking for apartments, and in the meantime I have been working and using a taxi to get back and forth.

I need advice on finding apartments, and how to deal with using taxis and what not. I was talking to a dancer from work and she told me that for about a year she was using taxis until she was able to save up enough money to buy a car.

ANY ADVICE WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

The best thing you could do to help save money is to find a reliable ride to work whether coworker or noncoworker. If you have coworkers that you trust it seems more than ideal. If you don't recruit a square friend who is usually available at the time that you are in need of a ride or accomodate to go in slightly earlier or later. Catching cabs both ways is indeed expensive and unproductive unless you live reasonably close. After I wrecked a car and insurance payout took longer than usual I was looking at $47 cab rides there and back. That means $100 of what I make off top was gone. Ridiculous when you live in town where you work. Not ridiculous considering at the time I didn't trust or know any of my coworkers well enough to trust them for a ride right after one of my coworkers murdered another on some satanic worshipping drug fueled mess.http://www.wmctv.com/story/3321634/d...edirected=true

Find the best, safest arrangement for yourself that you can and count every dollar. If you can find an apt near your job that would be ideal, but not necessarily safer if you are still traveling by cab. If you buy a car that is a few hundred dollar beater before you find an apt if your parents will let you stay that may be safer. Just try to be really careful and safe. The thing is some cabbies will sell or tell customers your info to what area they take you to or your address or street name. Most won't several will. Money talks and there are a lot of crazy people in this world as that story illustrates.Sad, but true. I knew both these girls and yeah Jennifer Faris had a devil tail tattooed on her, but that didn't mean she really had to worship Satan. When this happened, her gf, another close friend of mine, had no idea any of this was about to happen or that she would do anything like this. She was a regular person who got too far off into drugs and the insanity in her mind. What rounds this all out into nonsense is that the bf of the murderer had an estranged wife who was shot in the head by her boyfriend about a month before at an uspscale bar in the Bartlett area. Life is crazy. I'm not trying to scare you, but that's why I kept saying be careful. They were just supposed to give an epileptic girl who couldn't drive(Corie) a ride home because her boyfriend didn't answer and they lived right down the street.
Thank Goodness I smartened up! The old me is dead and gone.

Optimize on what you spend on cabs & such by working double shifts if the dayshift is even decent. Many clubs have very low house fees if you come in during the beginning of the day shift, & some clubs won't charge you extra for working the second shift. So you make more money, have a lower house fee, & can save money by not taking cabs on as many days. The other option is to live close enough to the club that you can walk home, & pay a bouncer to walk with you.
    Don't you ever sleep?
Not at night...that's when the stars have rather better things to do. They're coming out, shining, that sort of thing.

I cabbed it to and from work for about 6 months while I saved up for a car, I didn't have the option to move closer as I lived in the dorms at school, but it worked out fine for me. I'd work a double any time I could, so I could get maximum money out of paying my cab fair, and also my club was far away so I got the train closer and then got a cab from nearby. That way I wasn't paying for a huge cab fair, but I was arriving and leaving in a cab which was a lot safer. Also, if I had a few days that I could work in a row, I would stay at a Days Inn or whatever nearby - it was only about $30 a night and it meant I could sleep for a few hours then get right back in the club for another double. It would always be an exhausting few days, but it meant I was working almost non-stop and the money piled in fast. Then I got a used car for like $2500 which I bought in cash, so no payments to worry about, and the rest is history. That was over 3 years ago and I'm still driving the same car, so it's paid for itself a million times over. And I love it because I remember the work I put it to buy it for myself lol!

If you have to take a cab, see if you can find an independent with his own cab and phone number. then ask for a flat rate if you call him often/every night. obviously you would probably want to ride with him a few times first to see if he seems trustworthy.
I once lived in a downtown situation where parking was so much that i just cabbed it and i got a way better fare with a regular driver.
    As quoted by Luckyone:

Try to take the bus/train to work to save a few dollars. Definitely take a cab home, especially if you work night shifts, just for safety sake.

I don't know if you are old enough to rent a car but that might be more cost effective, depending on how much it costs to get to and from work. I've rented cars for $200 in a week before. I mean that's still very expensive when you look at it from a monthly standpoint, but if it costs you $40 or more to get to work and the same to get back home, you'll spend that in just 2 days of work, whereas you could just pay $200 and have it for 7 days. You know?
