    Default Skin Care Routine

Just wondering what your skin care routine and skin type is. I'm 25 and Ive always had decent skin but I am looking for something to combat wrinkles and clogged pores. I have normal/combo skin and usually dont break out I use Neutrogena makeup removing cleanser in the blue bottle and some Olay regenerist cream. It's nothing special.

I use Olay products exclusively, have for years, and even though I go to the tanning bed, I have yet to develop wrinkles. Not sure if it's good genes or a good skincare routine.

But I always take off my eye makeup and scrub my face after work, especially since I work in what seems the last SC in the country that still allows smoking inside.

The best skincare = what you put inside your body. Over time, it makes a huge difference if you eat a mostly plant-based diet (fruits, veges, nuts, seeds) with healthy oils thrown in (olive oil, salmon, etc.). Stay away from processed sugars (which have been linked to cell aging) and red meat.

I have to say this one was an excellent advise. I would like to add that if you must consume sugar, try to use glucose instead of sucrose. Glucose decomposes quickly inside your body and they do not create fat buildup.

By the way, what is your skin color? A proper skin care routine is skin specific. There is no one generic routine that will work for everyone.

I need something to battle my blackheads! I'm very unhappy with the product I use now. Do those pore strips work?

I have used the Biore Ultra pore strips for years and they do work you can see the crap they have removed from your pores. However they don't get it all out and I will always still have blackheads.

    Spironolactone for hormonal acne.

For blackheads, a 20% salicylic acid peel (buy on Amazon, do at home).

For weekly / monthly exfoliation, Philosophy's Vitamin C peel (Amazon).

For once a day face wash in the shower, any simple cleanser with 2% salicylic acid.

I'm just going to throw this post in here too (yes, it's super super long, but I know back when I had acne, I'd read through pages of information just hoping to get some insight into how to improve my skin). Skin problems fucking suck, so if my post helps even one person find something that helps them out - even if it's just a tiny tidbit of advice - it's worth it to me. I wrote this for a user who was asking about my experiences with spironolactone, so there's a bit about that, but it's mostly about what works for me these days...

I stopped taking spiro years ago simply because I wanted to see how I'd do without it, and I haven't had any problems since then. I used spironolactone as a stepping stone towards better skin, eating, and exercise habits. It helped me stop picking at my acne, which helped inspire me to take better and better care of my skin. I took it for a few years and then went off of it permanently (I didn't experience any withdrawal breakouts). These days, right before my period starts, I have a few days where my skin breaks out lightly / looks a bit more irritated (especially if my diet that month wasn't the cleanest), but I'm otherwise acne-free.

Regarding buying spironolactone on alldaychemist's website: I can't remember what dosage I used. For people who are new to using spiro, I'd start with the 25 mg and see if that has a positive effect on your skin (give it a month or two before bumping up your dosage). Acne.org has some great information about spironolactone: http://www.acne.org/women-and-acne.html (scroll to the bottom for information and reviews about spironolactone). PLEASE do your research before beginning this medication without consulting a doctor. I do NOT recommend doing this. Be especially cautious if you're taking other medications - research drug interactions before you start taking it. But if you're desperate, then I can understand the drive to do anything to improve your skin (especially if your appearance is your livelihood).

As for general advice about skin, I would say that changing your diet and getting plenty of exercise should be your focus. Healthy skin starts on the inside, so if you change anything, change your diet and exercise routines. Minimize processed sugars and try to figure out if anything you eat tends to break you out (e.g. dairy). Eat fish and and lean meats, lots of greens and vegetables, whole grains, fruits, and drink lots of water. You might consider taking a fish-oil supplement for general health (I use this: http://www.amazon.com/OmegaVia-Pharm...1726623&sr=8-1) and supplementing with other vitamins as well (B-complex, zinc, iron, vitamin E, vitamin A, vitamin D, vitamin C). Go easy on fat-soluble vitamins since they build up in your system (D, E, K, and A), and always take your vitamins with food. I've read that N-acetylcysteine can be good for people with grooming disorders (e.g. skin picking) among other things, and I just started taking it for its range of potential benefits (study: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3044191/) (what I take: http://www.amazon.com/Source-Natural...1726567&sr=8-3).

As for skin care, different things work for different people. I'm not sure if what I do now would have worked for me when I was a bit younger...I've refined my routine over the years (I'm 26 now). I only wash my face twice a day. If I wore makeup during the day, I wash my face in cold water with Philosophy's Purity Made Simple (which removes makeup). If I didn't wear makeup, then I only wash with Neutrogena's Ultra-Gentle Cleanser, which is even more gentle than the Philosophy cleanser (http://www.amazon.com/Neutrogena-Gen...1726732&sr=8-1). I moisturize with organic jojoba and rosehip oils (http://www.amazon.com/Unrefined-Revi...1726773&sr=8-1), as well as a night cream made by Eucerin. I vary what I use and when based on whether I'll be wearing makeup, whether it's day or night, etc. I also use Retin-A from alldaychemist 3-4x/week, and I exfoliate 1-2x/week using Olay's mini-peel (http://www.amazon.com/Olay-Regeneris...1726807&sr=8-1).

When I get acne, I put clay on it (http://www.amazon.com/Aztec-Secret-I...1726839&sr=1-1). Rather than punishing my skin when it breaks out, I treat it like it's an upset baby. I'm not sure if that makes any sense! But I used to do very harsh things to my skin whenever it would break out - applying benzoyl peroxide, acid peels, etc. - and now whenever it breaks out, I go into ultra-careful mode: I start eating more vegetables, make sure to keep it moisturized rather than drying it out, focus on treating individual spots rather than putting a mask on my whole face, etc.

My advice works for me and may work for others. Please don't feel as if I'm prescribing my skin-care routine to everyone. Different approaches work for different people, and I am not a doctor.

Usually in the shower I use a mild cleanser like cetaphil, then when I get out, I use neutrogena "spot treatment" 2.5% benzoyl peroxide all over my face. After that has dried, I use a gentle cetaphil moisturizer. I really like what I use because it clears my skin and the moisturizer naturally fights wrinkles-- or so I've presumed. I've never had clear skin before this regimen-- aptly taken from Acne.Org's "The Regimen."

I really would not recommend pore strips, as they can stretch your pores. A lot of people think they're clearing their pores of blackheads when they're actually pulling out sebaceous filaments, which only get worse the more you mess with them. Sebaceous filaments are extremely common and look like a collection of blackheads. Most people notice them on their noses. They refill once you clear them out. You can diminish their appearance with a good skincare routine, but you cannot get rid of them with extraction (whether through pore strips, masques, whatever).

Re: the first post, I think Charlie's suggestions are good. Personally, I use a Clarisonic brush (delicate) nightly, tretinoin every other night, and moisturizer (CeraVe) in the morning and before bed. The Clarisonic has really diminished the appearance of my sebaceous filaments, and tretinoin helps with breakouts and wrinkles. I've been trying to find a good Vitamin C serum, but the first one I tried made my skin too sensitive. I've read that Vitamin C serums are the most potent option for anti-aging, though they are unstable and can be pricy. The number one no-brainer to discourage wrinkles is, IMO, daily sunblock.

Besides products, I'm 25 too, and I think this is about the age where our lifestyles can really start to show on our faces. Tanning, smoking, chronic lack of sleep, drinking and eating crappy foods can definitely contribute to premature lines and wrinkles.

Oooh! Yes please, this is one old thread that would be tons of fun to resurrect! Here's my skincare product round-up:

Morning: Wash with water or Avalon Organics vitamin c cleansing milk, apply La Roche-Posay Anthelios SPF 15 to face, neck, and hands, on most days followed by Maybelline Dream Fresh bb cream SPF 30 (cheap but I really like it so whatever).

Night: Wash with Avalon Organics or Fresh soy cleanser, apply La Roche-Posay Effaclar retinol, moisturize with Fresh black tea moisturizer. I switch in Caudalie radiance serum and a few random QVC-type salicylic acid treatments that my sister gave me. I also physically exfoliate with a soft hand towel a few times a week.

Completely agree that healthy living is essential for lovely skin. When I was in basic training, my sugar and caffeine consumption were almost zero, obviously I was working out a ton, and I was drinking more water than I've ever had otherwise in my life. Despite only having a sad, basic bar soap and sunblock to use, my skin was really clear and beautiful, even with the fact that I was only sleeping for 4-5 hours a night!

I use the same moisturizers day and night, LaMer moisturizing cream and Revision Nectifirm for my neckline. I also use Cosmedix refine plus at night (a retinol cream) and I get CIT (collagen induction therapy, aka micro needling) done every two to three months as well as monthly facials. Yes it's expensive, no, I don't care, I have the skin of a 30 year old and I'm pushing 41, totally worth it.

I use a 25% TCA chemical peel once every few months. It helps get rid of wrinkles and discoloration. It also promotes collegen production. You can order a bottle for about $20 on amazon do it yourself at home. Just watch videos on YouTube on how to apply it correctly. its like having new baby skin after.

I've been trying to figure out which peel to buy. I used to use salicylic and glycolic. But I'm nervous about doing any peels now that I use retin-a regularly. Maybe I'll just use a peel with a lower acid concentration (gentler)...

If you are unsure about what strength would be best for you, I would suggest getting it done at a spa the first time so they can give you a recommendation of type of peel Is most suitable. search for chemical peels on groupon.com
There's usually lots of spas that give good deals for that on there.

For wrinkles, acne, clogged pores, blackheads etc - Tretinoin without a doubt. It is prescription from a Doctor and costs a small bundle - but it works a treat. I've been using it for a couple of years predominately for aging and earlier for mild condome acne. You can't use it if you are intending to fall pregnant or are pregnant, but otherwise it's just a cream that you put on sparingly before bed. I use it under my eyes and all. Although a little pricey, one tube lasts me about three months! If your skin isn't used to it, it can make you a little flakey initially - but I use single use cleanser impregnanted Buf Puf's and that takes care of any of that. I also like to use a salicylic acid in the morning and always use sunscreen - usually a Jan Marini one. Before the Buf Puf's I used to use a Clarisonic, but I honestly prefer the single use Buf Puf's once a day - less bacteria or contamination.
