    Default disturbing sleep paralysis

today i had a very disturbing bout of sleep paralysis. i have had sleep paralysis before, and although not so much recently. usually when sleep paralysis hits, i am used to it enough to stay calm and it passes fairly quickly.

anyway, i woke up in a state of sleep paralysis with my teeth clamped tightly on my tongue. hard- as in hard enough to draw blood. due to being in a bout of sleep paralysis i could not open my mouth and i also panicked a bit. it seemed to go on longer than most episodes of sleep paralysis that i have had.

anyway, im disturbed. no idea what could have triggered an episode of sleep paralysis with me apparently trying to bite my tongue off.
The best thing i have heard in a strip club to date:
customer: we should get married right now! we should get a shotgun marriage!
me: uhh... i think you are misunderstanding what a shotgun marriage means. A shotgun marriage means you knock me up and my daddy shows up at your door with a gun and forces you to marry me and raise the baby. You mean elope.
customer: hmm... nah actually i will take the shotgun marriage. At least then we would be having sex.

Sorry Athena. I've had this problem forever too. It's called "The Old Hag" where I'm from - apparently it's a genetic defect in the brain common with people in my area, so as kids we're told all sorts of weird ass, terrifying stories about it. Needless to say whenever a bout of Sleep Paralysis hits I start thinking back to the scary bedtime stories and start mentally spazzing...which tends to make it worse.

Anyway, I'm sorry you got caught biting your own tongue off. How long did it last? I find inconsistent sleep patterns, sleeping on my back and eating right before bed make mine worse, but it's an individual thing. Once I got a Charlie-horse and had to just lay there silently, enduring.

If it keeps happening, and you have good medical insurance, maybe you should see a doctor about it?

I don't really have any advice to give, but I empathize.

    Sorry this happened to you!
I have episodes of sleep paralysis pretty frequently, usually accompanied by hypnagogic hallucinations which are at best disorienting and at worst terrifying. I've been having them for years so you'd think I'd be used to it, but I still find them genuinely frightening.
However, I have never caused myself physical harm during an episode. I can only imagine how unnerving that must be.

Sometimes when it happens I will focus on trying to move my fingers to help me snap out of it. Sometimes I just wait it out, and if I feel myself start to panic I just remind myself it will be over soon.

I've noticed that I have them more often if I am sleeping on my back, or if I've taken any medication that makes me sleepy. It differs from person to person, but poor sleep hygiene, drugs/medication, and stress can trigger an episode.

Soooo as long as you sleep 8 hours a night on a consistent schedule (and not on your back!), don't take any drugs, and experience no stress then you should be fine! Maybe...

In all seriousness, though, it sounds like an isolated incident so try not worry. I know this is easier said than done, but there isn't much you can do about it and worrying might just make it worse. If you continue to have episodes, try recording some details about your sleep/exercise/food/drug habits to see if you can pinpoint what may be causing them.

Yeah, I have this too.....not fun at all.

I find it happens to me when Im not getting enough sleep and stressed out. I only really need about 4 hrs a sleep a night, but if I start going for like 2-3 days no sleep, usually because Im stressed out and cant fall asleep, thats when it kicks in. ...and it sucks cause for me, once it starts, it will happen every single time I try to sleep for a few days, which makes me scared to sleep, and just makes it worse.

Anyway..what has worked for me is taking it easy on anything that stresses me out during the day...I pretty much just go on a haitus and screw the world, and try to get even more sleep for awhile so that your body is really completely rested (I have to force myself to go to bed early, and when I wake up a few hours later, force myself to lay there til I fall asleep again)

Most of all, I was so thankful once I found out what it was...between the hallucinations and voices and such...for the longest time I really thought I was possessed or something. (yay for growing up in a ultra religious household) Once I knew what it was, I was able to find ways to keep it from happening.

I suffer from it as well. Usually it's some kind of surgery, and I realize I'm asleep when it doesn't hurt - but cannnot wake up or move.

I've heard rumors that medical marijuana can help, but I'm sure I wouldn't know...

Wiggle your toes, it will wake you up! I've done tons of research on it and this is the only thing that's helped me..

I have had this for several years. Sometimes (most actually) it happens several times in one night. I noticed I am usually VERY tired almost forcing myself to stay awake when it happens the second time. I absolutely hate it. I sleep on a pretty solid schedule now usually following my bf to bed so its only happened a handful in the past 6 months.
