I've been thinking about getting a perm but I don't want it to look tacky. I just want my hair to look similar to how it looks when you take out french braids. I also don't want my hair to be too damaged. Anyone had one?

Dont do it. Just braid your hair instead.
Perms are fun at first. But either they grow out and your roots are a different texture than the rest of your hair, or else you have to keep getting them done and they ruin your hair.
I miss my long hair so much. I have never had a perm that didnt result in a short cut to get all the damage out. Please dont do it.
My MySpace Page:
When you perform... you are out of yourself--larger and more potent, more beautiful. You are for minutes heroic. This is power. This is glory on earth. And it is yours, nightly.

I never had problems with perms. However, I agree with Colleen that just braiding it would be better. Wash your hair before bed, dry it 3/4 of the way, then braid it & let it sit overnight. In the morning you'll have the great waves & it will be healthy as well as shiny. :-)
Don't you ever sleep?
Not at night...that's when the stars have rather better things to do. They're coming out, shining, that sort of thing.

Perms and regret go hand in hand!
If you want your hair to look that way, just braid it. It will look a million times better and healthier. I got a perm in high school, thinking it would give my fine straight hair some volume, and while I sort of liked it for a while, it became a problem when it grew out in a different texture than my natural hair. I wound up straightening it/heat styling it all the time, and my hair was so unbelievably fried that I eventually cut it all off.
If you get a perm, you can't really bleach or dye that hair again, or you'll eff up your hair. You also need to be careful with heat styling, and use gentle, moisturizing products. Basically perms are just a huge pain in the ass, when you could easily style it that way yourself. Plus, they're stinky and time consuming. Don't do it! And if you do, proceed with caution!
I like to take risks! I have been looking into getting a perm, too. I have platinum bleached hair, but absolutely hate straight hair. I don't think the damage will be as bad as me using a curling tong four times a week on it. Do your research. There are a few of really cool techniques these days. Of course, your hair texture makes a big difference on what kind you should get. DO IT!
