Default Is it worth it to go back to blonde?

I bleached my own hair blonde for over 2 years. I really liked the color but hated the maintenance (especially since my roots are so dark) and was also growing increasingly disturbed by how much damage I was doing to it. But I didn't want to get rid of it while I danced at my club because it made me stand out. I told myself that once I quit at my current club, I would change my hair color.

Well, I finally did it a little over a week ago! I wanted to go red, but because the color wasn't taking well, the orange-red that I wanted turned into them doing it as a dark red-brown. Also, because it was "corrective coloring" I ended up paying $350 for it... when I really don't have that money to be spending right now cuz I just quit my job...

I like the color - it's pretty. But I realized almost instantly that it did not look like my "hot sex-worker hair" like blonde did... I still think I look good, but, it's like - I look pretty, not HOT and SEXY. If I want to keep my hair this color, I'll have to keep going back and spending more money on touch-ups anyway so it's not like this is no-maintenance. I really want my blonde back and I feel like if I'm going to keep going back to the salon and spending money on touch-ups, I may as well do it with the color I liked more. But to get it back to blonde, it would probably be another several hundred dollars and everyone keeps telling me I should keep this color awhile since I spent so much on it in the first place. Should I suck it up and get my money's worth or should I chalk it up to an expensive mistake and just get myself back to blonde already? If I went with doing it myself again, would I be able to bleach out the salon color or will that just go horribly horribly wrong? I only ever bleached my hair when it was grown out to it's natural color.

I recently went from Platinum blonde to brunette. I go back and forth every so often. There are def pros and cons. I think brunette can be just as sexy if not more so than blonde. I DEF need to airbrush tan regularly with dark hair as opposed to my fair natural skin tone but I look younger and more "wholesome."

I think your biggest concern should be the damage you would do going back to blonde especially removing orange/red which is pretty much the hardest color to strip from hair. And after all the coloring, stripping your hair now could leave it seriously distressed! Although it's possible to do make sure you suck it up , go to the salon with an experienced colorist...you get what you pay for!

And last suggestion/thought: I always take my hair dark to blonde with highlights. I have long, very thick hair and want to keep it that way! It takes longer and cost a little more but you can monitor the damage and back off if need be. Also you may find a happy medium with the highlights and be satisfied. Good luck and be careful!

As far as the color... If you're going to spend money on hair dye... you may as well spend it on the color you want instead of settling.

Seriously, though. DON'T spend $350 on a color you didn't want because they couldn't get it right. If they couldn't do it, they shouldn't have sat you down in the chair, and you shouldn't have to pick another color or do something you want half-way through because your colorist sucks. This is your hard-earned money you're talking about here.
If you do go back to blonde... do not go back to this place.

Although coloring is chemistry, there is no guarantee about the outcome when coloring hair. SOOO many things come into factor...Original hair color, hair texture, condition, previous coloring, the brand and shade of that color and right down to the persons body temp! I have gone to a master colorist and although she can usually predict outcomes of color, she always warns me if there is even a chance it won't turn out what I'm expecting.

Be realistic with your expectations and honest with your stylist about all previous treatments and you'll get the best results.

I didn't even get to choose the color it turned into. I picked an orange color after showing her a picture of the color I wanted and was straightforward about the fact that I bleached my own hair. She basically ended up turning most of it pink while the roots with my natural color turned dark red. There was no way I was leaving while it looked like that and when they redid it the whole thing just turned dark red/brownish. All the while I was being charged $100/hour. I tried not to blame them since I had unprofessionally sucked all the color out of my hair and I know the color had nothing to take to... But even the roots didn't turn the color they should have so it really wasn't the right mix to turn my hair the color I wanted... I've been to this salon before I know they have a shady way of trying to jack up prices where I don't need to be spending that much. I just kept going because they always did a legitimately good job on my hair but this just pissed me off... I won't be going back to them anymore. But I worry if I try to have another salon take my hair back to blonde, they'll also charge me ridiculously for "corrective coloring" since they weren't the ones who did the red... Ugh I shoulda just kept it blonde.

^^Red lightens up really quickly, so it should be the color you want (or fixable) really soon. To successfully go red from platinum, I went dark blonde first, to avoid the pink. If you need advice on some semi-permanent colors that wont kill your hair I can help out there.

That's what I thought but as the color fades it's just turning brown, not orange. I should have segued into the right color, but they didn't even suggest it. Just told me they would do a semi-permanent instead of permanent color first - but I really think they were doing it more to make me come back more and, again, get more money out of me, not because they truly cared about my hair.

I'm really just wondering if I can change my salon color back to blonde by myself... it damaged my hair but it was cheaper and I always had the exact color I wanted. I'm just terrified that, since it's dyed color and not my natural color, that the bleach will turn it some horrible color...

Don't do it! Not yourself anyway. BUT if your unsatisfied with the salon, their treatment of you and the outcome of your hair certainly don't go back there! Look for a new salon and ask particularly for a master colorist. And make sure you know exactly what they charge for everything they are doing before you sit down in the chair.

Also at this point....you may want to let it fade a bit and give red another shot. Not that the empty blonde has a "filler" color should take much better and more predictably.

Id be afraid you might end up pink if you try to go back to blonde yourself. Maybe go for dark blonde, then gradually go back to platinum! I always do better doing my hair myself, but I was taught how to do color by a very, very good colorist.

If you are brave enough to do it yourself, Id let if fade a bit more, then gradually bleach it out with extremely cool toners afterward till you are the blonde you want or a nice dark/cool blonde, then you can successfully go red! I did it myself a while ago. here is my color progression.

Its actually a shade lighter now.

Thank you for those pictures! That looks like a good progression. I actually really really like the color in the middle picture - that's a beautiful gold color!
