    Default Keratosis Pilaris

I have had this for a few years now and had no idea what those annoying red bumps on my upper arms were. I was actually reading the reviews for Lush Dream lotion and people kept saying how much it helped with there KP. All the symptoms seemed familiar, hard little bumps on the upper arms, similar to pimples but they're not. It's actually an excess build-up of keratin in the skin that gets trapped.

Anyway, now that I know what they are I researched how to treat it and wanted to share what has been working for me. I exfoliate before I shower with a body brush, then I swipe on DDF glycolic toner after before applying a good lotion (I use Hempz). Cleared them right up.

I hope this helps someone, as I had been annoyed for years over these things but had a mild enough case that I just never bothered to go to the derm.

I've had this since I was little. I use to have it on my face but now it's just on my upper arms. My poor daughter has it too. It never goes away on me but when I do a salt scrub once a week and out thick body butter on frequently it gets better. It's embarasing though because customers are always like ooh you have goose bumps and Iam just like yeah because I don't want to explain what it is to them.

I googled this and realized I think I have this on the back of my arms. It has never bothered me, but I might try that routine and see if it makes them go away.

I have it all over my arms and legs. Few people know that it's actually an auto-immune disorder, and with it being so common, often dismiss it.

Touted as a deficiency of vitamins A & D, KP typically is on fatty body areas. It also is common in pregnant women. Taking 2 tbsp of ACV in 8oz water twice per day, coconut oil (anti-fungal, anti-microbial, and anti-bacterial) along with rainbow-lite multi and an extra supplement of folic acid has cleared it up pretty well.

To supplement I use a pumice in the shower with Dove Shea Butter body oil shower cream all over and the bumps have smoothed out nicely.

Another thing to consider is diet. Candida is another theory, hence my taking the ACV and coconut oil. It really calmed down when I cut out gluten.

^ I don't know if I believe that. I get blood test done all the time and have never been deficient in any vitamins nor do I get ill, same with my daughter. I've heard they don't really know whatcauses it, that's what all my doctors have told me. I think its blocked oil glands that cause pimple like bumps to occur. They went away on my face but are still on my arms. My daughter and I have both had this since we were about 6.

Ah, that's something we have in common - I've been tested for vitamin deficiencies, etc.. But also keep in mind, my case was quite severe and more than the mild bumps typical of the backs of arms and legs. Supposedly the reason no deficiencies of vitamin A are apparent on tests is because only a small portion of vitamin A is converted to retinol to facilitate cell turn over.

Again another theory is vitamin C deficiency; it causes "corkscrewed" hairs that end up being ingrown. It's frustrating, but I can only tell you what works for me. I took cod liver oil and it did nothing. My doctors didn't know what caused it and said I'd outgrow it.

You mentioned you had it on your face? At the time, did you have flushed cheeks? I had the same thing - it was on my face and with the cutting out of gluten also lost KP and facial flushing, or KPRF. Eczema and KP are both forms of dermatitis, essentially just inflammation of the intestine, usually off the back of an allergy. Definitely look at your diet, after a while you might notice trigger foods where you'll have a flare up and vice versa.

^ Yeah I did have flushed cheeks when I had it on my face. I still have flushed cheeks I didn't wear foundation until after I had my daughter because then they became blotchy. Hormones from pregnancy and birth control can also cause that. Nobody ever believed I didn't wear blush or foundation. My skin was gorgeous. I haven't had the bumps on my face since I was around 17 though.

The reviews for the DDF toner on Makeupalley are stellar. I might have to order it!
