Default any advice for a first-time manicure recipient?

I'm seriously considering paying somebody to do my nails. I assume many people on this forum have done that at some point in their lives. I want to know:

    1. What is implied by the terms "manicure" and "pedicure"? I'm really scared somebody is going to try to sand off my callouses and/or cut off my cuticules.

    2. Is it okay to hire someone to come to your house? Should someone with first aid skills be nearby? What sort of equipment should be on hand?

    3. Can they put some sort of acrylic coating on your nails without sanding off your real nails?

    4. If I get my nails "done," can I remove the results with normal acetone?

    5. I am imagining somebody applying a thin layer of glittery red plastic that somehow stays on my nails for a few weeks. Is that even a real thing? And if so, how much should I expect to be charged?

    Thanks!

    1. My mani and pedi includes arm and leg massage, soak, exfoliating scrub, hot towel, nail shaping, cuticle grooming, pumice stone on my soles, buffing, and polish of course.

    2. I go to a salon, but I suppose there are people who do house calls, but the place I go to gives you complimentary champagne or wine so I always like a free drink

    3. I don't use any sort of acrylics so I'm not sure.

    4. I think so.

    5. I spend about 60 bucks, but I am about to try this new place, that uses organic water based polishes, so that's a little pricier. I think it depends on where you are are and how much you tip. The cheapest I ever paid was 50, the most 75.

a mani is when someone files, buffs and polishes your fingernails. a pedi is the same thing for your toenails. if your lucky youll get a hand/foot massage as well. they dont cut off your cuticles but they do soften them up and shape them nicely, it doesnt hurt at all.

i dunno if u can find people who come to your house, but u should be able to find someone who works from their house if u dont want to go a salon. either way they would have their own gear.

and no, u dont need a first aider

    3. Can they put some sort of acrylic coating on your nails without sanding off your real nails?

not rly, tho ive heard filing them down damages them less. but they cant go straight on, they need a rough surface

    4. If I get my nails "done," can I remove the results with normal acetone?

not if u go with acrylics/gels. u have to get them removed at the salon

    5. I am imagining somebody applying a thin layer of glittery red plastic that somehow stays on my nails for a few weeks. Is that even a real thing? And if so, how much should I expect to be charged?

that kinda sounds like gel nails? maybe? i dunno, i get acrylics. i pay £30 a set, but if u do get acrylics u need to go back for infills every 2-3 wks to cover new nail growth and that costs £15

    Thanks!

i love getting my nails done. partly coz i adore acrylics and i cant exactly do them myself, but also coz its an ace way of having a nice girly hr of pampering. whatever u end up doing, i hope u get lovely nails!

Some nail salons may try to shave off callouses or cut cuticles. If you can, tell them not to. It's not good nor healthy to have that done. A manicure is when they shape and paint your nails. may include buffing, hand massage, or a soak. Same with pedicure. If its a "spa" pedicure, they'll put you in a chair attached to a foot soak, where they will then pumice your feet, shape and paint your toenails. Sometimes you can get nail art done too.

    2. Is it okay to hire someone to come to your house? Should someone with first aid skills be nearby? What sort of equipment should be on hand?

The salons normally have some sort of basic first aid kit if something happens. I've never heard of anyone coming to a home visit, but you may bring your own tools.

    3. Can they put some sort of acrylic coating on your nails without sanding off your real nails?

Look up Shellac. It's a manicure that lasts about 2 weeks without chipping. Some nail techs will put the top coat as an acrylic-ish type of coating. A UV top coat, I think it's called.

    4. If I get my nails "done," can I remove the results with normal acetone?

If it's a natural-nail manicure and pedicure, yes, you can.

    5. I am imagining somebody applying a thin layer of glittery red plastic that somehow stays on my nails for a few weeks. Is that even a real thing? And if so, how much should I expect to be charged?

Some stores carry such a thing. I personally dont like them. They never fit my nail shape.

Think I am going to look for a non-fancy nail shop that does CND-brand UV gel manicures and pedicures. (Their website referred me to the local Ritz-Carlton hotel, where I would not feel comfortable.) Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!
