    Default Building a website Q&A

If you think it's time you got yourself your own site, for whatever reason, then this thread should help. It is by no means an exhaustive Q&A, and I look forward to hearing other opinions on the subject

The idea of this thread is to help people who don't want to spend a month developing their site, or those who want to get rid of their "Under construction" image, and finally get some eyes on their site!

Let me know if you need any help getting set up, or clarification on anything at all. I am a professional web developer, my partner is a programmer, and my wife is a search engine optimisation specialist... we should be able to cover most things for you..

"I want my own site... I should start with a free blogging platform like Blogger.com, right?"
In some circumstances, yes. It depends what you want, and where you want to go with your site. If you want to have total freedom for putting your own advertising on, having great looking galleries, or actually promoting yourself professionally - then a platform like Blogger.com is not really suitable. If you just want to blog about your day to day life, for example, then sure, go ahead.

The most common platform used in web development and internet marketing today is Wordpress - and I champion Wordpress every chance I get.

"I saw hosting for $0.99 on eBay, is this a good deal?"
Yep, it sure is - but don't expect the "99.9% uptime" they advertise. 99 cent hosting is usually shared hosting, where there will be possibly hundreds of websites on the same server. Some companies do this better than others, and allow enough bandwidth and can handle the server load. Others... not so much.

Before you buy any "cheap" hosting, you should check the following:
    - Bandwidth: This is the amount of traffic your website can handle. To give you an idea, a full multimedia site, 5 - 6 pages, with Youtube videos and images & text will use about 150mb bandwidth per month, having 500 - 1000 visitors. If you are using a webcam streaming software on your site, ask the vendor for advice on bandwidth, as ther may be some server-side usage.
    - Storage: The space you need on your site will vary. If you have a lot of large, high quality images, then you probably want about 10 - 20gb of space. This will cover you for galleries, thumbnails, and enlarged versions. If you are using streamed videos like Youtube, this uses no real space at all.
    - Uptime: Ask the reseller WHO they resell for. Host Gator is banded around as the "best", but there are others like Heart Internet, HostMonster and the like. If you are using adult images and content, you will need to check the TOS of each host, and they can be more than accomodating (just to get your business) so tell them exactly what you will be putting on your site... they can often do you a good deal. Don't click on the first "Adult Hosting!" banner you see on an adult site. These are often over priced, and low on space/bandwidth packages.

"I got my hosting, now what?"
Simple. You should have CPanel logins. Log in, and head for Fantastico. This software auto-installs scripts on your site. Wordpress is one of those scripts.

Install Wordpress (5 minutes or less)

"Wow! That was simple. Now what?"
Now you need to perform some simple steps on your blog to make it better visible to search engines, and look cleaner...

    First Steps

"I want a really cool logo, how much should I spend?"
Go to Fiverr.com and pay a good designer ($5!) for a couple of logos. The quality of the designer will show in their feedback & popularity. We have at least 10 people we work with on a regular basis over at Fiverr, because they have proved they are capable professionals.

"Ok, my blog still looks shoddy. I want it to look sexy..."
In your Wordpress dashboard, navigate to Appearance > Themes. You can search for themes here & install them (they are all free), or you can download them from Wordpress:

You might also want to check out these sources:

...or just search Google for "free wordpress theme" + adult etc.

Or if you want to pay for themes, ThemeForest is a great place to start
    Example

    Main site

"Should I link in my social stuff?"
Hell yes. This is crucial to getting traffic on a regular basis, and if you are using Wordpress, you can set up Facebook's RSS app to feed your Wall with blog posts, whenever you make one. There's also Twitter plugins & apps available for this...

    Facebook blog plugins

    RSS feed to your Wall

    RSS feed to Twitter

    ==========================================
    So, that's your site built!

Marketing is a whole different ballgame, but shoot me a PM and I'll help where I can

    Enjoy!

    PS
I will add to this thread where possible with any new tips or any FAQ

You know what - I would say Blogger is a good fit.

you can have up to 10 pages on your blog - as in pages....

You can make money off it with affiliate programs and adsense.

Everything is completely customizable - and it is completely free.

I have different apps and gadgets in there for scheduling my shows, where I will be and where you can buy my videos.

As far as traffic goes, twitter and everything else I have brought on my own - my page is far from finished yet....but - already my plan is in place.

I couldn't be happier with Blogger - thanking the book for dummies at this point and all the research I did.

All the free tools are there with the opportunity to make money - but I'd say I will stick with blogger to avoid the headache of a website and the BS that comes with it. I'd rather have free space that I can always depend on being up rather than pay for something that might not be.

    Just my opinion though.

Hey, its a valid opinion. I think I tend to steer people towards getting a Wordpress blog first because it saves the headache of moving all their stuff from a Blogger account to a Wordpress blog. There are "seamless" tools - though I have yet to have a pain free move

The freedom of plugins and themes, as well as custom code I put in most of the plugins we use has always drawn me to open source platforms like WP...

Blogger is ideal as long as you are happy, and want to continue to use it, without any plans for a site move, I would say

With wordpress, you have to have some knowledge of code and database and all that stupid crap...

Not trying to be mean - but some of the girls need an easy solution rather than something that will cause a headache

Wordpress could be ok if it wasn't open source...that can lead to high jacking of someone's stuff - and that's never a good thing...

Right, valid opinion. Like I said, some are not good with code and do not have time to learn it and need something that's laid out and being easily accessible to them.

However, I just wish some "newbies" would use the search option before posting a thread that I posted about a week ago...and other girls posted about even way before that...

    Just saying...

I didn't see anything on the forum about bandwidth, RSS or social from a blog, (and I did search) otherwise I wouldn't have posted the thread? I saw your other post, and it didn't cover what I wrote.... What I don't get is how has my post pissed you off? I was trying to be helpful.

There's plenty of threads on how to make a website, blogs and everything else from featured members and veteren cam girls....

You probably haven't found them because of many things being moved into different places...

Normally - they are in the OTHER WORK section. I

Your post started off with I want my own website...and went on to talk about blogs, logos and all this other stuff....If you may had paid attention, many girls have their websites in their signatures...

I'm not pissed by any means - I am just dishing out the SAME shit that was dished to me when I was a newbie and I was told to use the search function.

    You'll get used to it.

One advantage to Wordpress over Blogger is that on Wordpress platforms when users comment you can capture their IP address...so like...stalkers.

Bubble - you are very welcome dear. If you need anything please let me know..

Zoe - I don't care about IP addresses. In the business - you have to expect some will get obsessed with you and some stalk you. It just matters whether you are smart about it or not. BLOCK button is the best thing in the world.

Best part is - I could get back on MGF if I wanted to even though I got booted.

I have an IT degree - it's not like masking my IP or getting around that would be a problem. I just think they need to stop playing big brother and give more leeway...and they would be fine..BUT - when there is cold day in hell - it may happen.

on my blog, i will not allow ppl to comment. that is what twitter is for, lol. besides it will make my blog setup look to cluttery. i don't have any use for IP addresses, so i really don't care about that. if you are very savvy about your privacy, you won't have to worry about stalkers getting a hold of your info.

Why are we even mentioning IPs? Is it really needed to know where each one of your customers are? Why track them? What's the point of that?

Why does this seem like it is turning into a version of I SPY?
