If you think it's time you got yourself your own site, for whatever reason, then this thread should help. It is by no means an exhaustive Q&A, and I look forward to hearing other opinions on the subject
The idea of this thread is to help people who don't want to spend a month developing their site, or those who want to get rid of their "Under construction" image, and finally get some eyes on their site!
Let me know if you need any help getting set up, or clarification on anything at all. I am a professional web developer, my partner is a programmer, and my wife is a search engine optimisation specialist... we should be able to cover most things for you..
"I want my own site... I should start with a free blogging platform like Blogger.com, right?"
In some circumstances, yes. It depends what you want, and where you want to go with your site. If you want to have total freedom for putting your own advertising on, having great looking galleries, or actually promoting yourself professionally - then a platform like Blogger.com is not really suitable. If you just want to blog about your day to day life, for example, then sure, go ahead.
The most common platform used in web development and internet marketing today is Wordpress - and I champion Wordpress every chance I get.
"I saw hosting for $0.99 on eBay, is this a good deal?"
Yep, it sure is - but don't expect the "99.9% uptime" they advertise. 99 cent hosting is usually shared hosting, where there will be possibly hundreds of websites on the same server. Some companies do this better than others, and allow enough bandwidth and can handle the server load. Others... not so much.
Before you buy any "cheap" hosting, you should check the following:
- Bandwidth: This is the amount of traffic your website can handle. To give you an idea, a full multimedia site, 5 - 6 pages, with Youtube videos and images & text will use about 150mb bandwidth per month, having 500 - 1000 visitors. If you are using a webcam streaming software on your site, ask the vendor for advice on bandwidth, as ther may be some server-side usage.
- Storage: The space you need on your site will vary. If you have a lot of large, high quality images, then you probably want about 10 - 20gb of space. This will cover you for galleries, thumbnails, and enlarged versions. If you are using streamed videos like Youtube, this uses no real space at all.
- Uptime: Ask the reseller WHO they resell for. Host Gator is banded around as the "best", but there are others like Heart Internet, HostMonster and the like. If you are using adult images and content, you will need to check the TOS of each host, and they can be more than accomodating (just to get your business) so tell them exactly what you will be putting on your site... they can often do you a good deal. Don't click on the first "Adult Hosting!" banner you see on an adult site. These are often over priced, and low on space/bandwidth packages.
"I got my hosting, now what?"
Simple. You should have CPanel logins. Log in, and head for Fantastico. This software auto-installs scripts on your site. Wordpress is one of those scripts.
Install Wordpress (5 minutes or less)
"Wow! That was simple. Now what?"
Now you need to perform some simple steps on your blog to make it better visible to search engines, and look cleaner...
First Steps
"I want a really cool logo, how much should I spend?"
Go to Fiverr.com and pay a good designer ($5!) for a couple of logos. The quality of the designer will show in their feedback & popularity. We have at least 10 people we work with on a regular basis over at Fiverr, because they have proved they are capable professionals.
"Ok, my blog still looks shoddy. I want it to look sexy..."
In your Wordpress dashboard, navigate to Appearance > Themes. You can search for themes here & install them (they are all free), or you can download them from Wordpress:
You might also want to check out these sources:
...or just search Google for "free wordpress theme" + adult etc.
Or if you want to pay for themes, ThemeForest is a great place to start

"Should I link in my social stuff?"
Hell yes. This is crucial to getting traffic on a regular basis, and if you are using Wordpress, you can set up Facebook's RSS app to feed your Wall with blog posts, whenever you make one. There's also Twitter plugins & apps available for this...

So, that's your site built!
Marketing is a whole different ballgame, but shoot me a PM and I'll help where I can
Enjoy!

I will add to this thread where possible with any new tips or any FAQ![]()
