    Default Hooters

Why is it that I find the prospect of working at Hooters so demeaning? A friend of mine is hesitant to try stripping and mentioned that she might work at Hooters instead. I had to control my gag reflex. I worked at a Hooters about 12 years ago for a grand total of about 2 weeks and found the whole experience to be more misogynistic then in any strip club environment I've encountered. And yet, working at Hooters is much more socially acceptable.

I didn't really get into it with my my friend but I guess I just feel like if you're going to objectify yourself like that why not go for the gold? Work for yourself, control your own schedule and set your own terms. A few more inches of flesh and your fattening your own pockets rather then some corporate restaurant (unless you work at a strip club chain). Plus waitressing is damn hard work. Working at Applebee's is probably just as demeaning. But maybe my attitude is skewed by too many years of working in a strip club.

I worked at hooters for a hot minute also but couldn't take how condescending the management was. They talked down to all the girls lke they were idiots, I lasted all of about a month and couldn't take it anymore. I've danced off and on for 10 years and never was treated as poorly in a club as I was at hooters.

I honestly think working at Hooters is more demeaning than working as a stripper. IMO

I've never worked there, but I've noticed that people seem to look down on Hooters waitresses the same way they do strippers. Maybe not as badly, but there's definitely a stigma attached.

I'd honestly rather just go all out and be a stripper than be in a "mainstream" job where you're still objectified and degraded, and for less money. Plus, I'd be just as embarrassed to say I worked at Hooters as I would to say I'm a stripper... lol

The girls at Hooters are pretty close to being a stripper in what they wear and the way they have to act. Then you have to deal with the way the men treat you... hell if I am going to have to put up with that I am going to make sure I get paid damn good.
That's why I am a stripper... I make great cash is 2 days and off the next 5 to figure out my future.Attachment 26818

I used to waitress and even at normal restaurants men will treat you like your just tits and ass. I remember several times when asking for orders, they'd respond "Nothing on the menu" and then wink or smile like they were so clever. Plus the semi-groping, asking for number, etc. Can't even imagine how gross it is at Hooter's.

The shit you have to deal with in the service industry. I just decided it was easier to be a stripper where I could be a bitch and still make more money. Best decision ever.

Wow, I used to be interested in working at Hooters. I'm so glad I read this thread first. I would have quit within the 1st hour. I can't stand having to be nice to men who hit on me. I worked at fucking Wal-Mart and almost got groped a couple times, but at least I could report them.

I was actually considering Tilted Kilt, which is really the same idea as Hooters, just a diferent uniform.

no, i totally agree. not just with the hooters thing but the fact that i find almost any "normal" job that i can get with my age and skill set demeaning because of how little money i will make. for instance, i could have gotten a great summer job painting faces at the zoo... and it would have been so much fun!... but for 7.25 an hour, i'd rather just stay home and play with my rabbits. i really don't plan to stop stripping until i have whatever i need to succeed in a different profession that will make at least around as much money as i currently make. i just can't imagine it!

The company is known for having some poor managers who last far too long. Prime example:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xIg4j43Lqaw

That was from the show "Undercover Boss". The guy in the glasses is actually the company CEO working undercover as a normal employee! With credit to him, he wants the company to clean up & actually fired this manager.

I've met some really great Hooter's franchise owners. Really the only issue I don't like is that they won't allow waitresses to moonlight as dancers, but even that I can understand because the company doesn't want to lose customers to the strip clubs... which I was informed of by one of the franchise owners when I confronted him about it. All in all, not a horrible company, you just need to make sure you are working with a good owner & manager... but that goes for any company.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this way. The management at the Hooters I worked at was pretty bad. But even if they had been decent I still hated dealing with most of the customers. At least in a strip club if a customer is being extra rude or cheap I can always walk away. You don't get that option as a waitress.

My boyfriend and I recently had a discussion about this while eating at Hooters. Just seems like dealing with all the same BS without the money. At least as a stripper, if I'm dealing with an asshole, I can walk away or tell him to fuck off without losing my job. Can't imagine not having the ability to do that. It must be hell.

Wow, the guy was a complete asshole. And wtf @ the CEO who said he had two young daughters and wouldn't have a problem with them working at Hooters? Sorry, but the CEO was just as bad.

I agree with you. I've contemplated working at Hooters maybe once or twice, but at the end of the day it's customer service and I hate that field title. Better to get paid much more for the same thing and have the option to walk away if I feel like it, like someone else mentioned.

I despise customer service jobs as well. I'm sure most of them are good people and contributing members of society, blah, blah blah ... but once they walk into a store/restaurant, they suddenly think they're royalty and expect you to treat them like it.

Ugh hooters.. worked there a total of 2 days and couldn't go back. No strip club I have worked at has that many rules ..your shorts aren't high enough! Your nails aren't french tip! Your hair HAS to be down and perfect, douchey creepy managers.. I swear it felt way more degrading taking shitty chicken wings to some perv for a cheap tip than just dancing and wearing what I like, getting complimented and making better money. Those fuckin tan stockings are evil too!

I worked at Hooters, while I was stripping. I was told I had to keep the fact I was a stripper quiet. Alot, of the girls found out because one of there boyfriends had come to the club I worked at. I was instantly a social outcast at Hooters. The ironic thing is 5 yrs later alot of the same girls from Hooters are strippers or have posed in playboy. Besides, the bitchy girls,I really enjoyed working at Hooters.

I would go nuts working as a Hooter's waitress.

If a guy was a jerk to me I'd probably have to kiss his ass regardless, be treated poorly and possibly not tipped. Then there is dealing with management.

Tell me what is the point?

Dancing on stage is far more artistic than gimmicky bullshit. And who wants to work their ass off and be degraded in a sexist environment for little money.

    Also I'm not into uniforms.

Omg! This is horrifying -I also cannot believe that these girls actually went ahead & did this rather than just say "Fuck you" & walk out. Unbelieavable

I worked at Hooters for about a month last year. I really liked it but they are really strict. Shifts started at 4pm & ended whenever the waitresses cleaned the store...probably between 11p to 3am (depending on the day). During this time, I had class at 9am plus had to drive like 40 minutes back home. Even with all the late night cleaning we did, the restaurant had rats. Gross! Plus, the managers knew and agreed to my availablility (due to school) but scheduled me for those long, late shifts. The worst part were of course the customers that thought their "ish didn't stink" or groups of 15 high schoolers that came in & only 1 person tipped maybe $3. Pay was okay (at the time) 3.28/hr and tips could be anywhere from $25-150 (depending on the day). End of the day, my body was sore and I was exhausted, with no time to study because of the a&%hole managers so I guess it wasn't worth it in comparison to stripping. But a good experience I guess *kanye shrug*

ugh I just drove past a Hooters yesterday and was shuddering!!! They just seem cheesy and horrible. I have also had normal waiting table jobs where the guys were already creepy and grappy, not to mention the kitchen staff, so I can only imagine how bad Hooters is. Why not just be a stripper already and make more $$ for your trouble.

That being said I did consider working at one of those bikini coffee stands....I don't know it seems a whole lot less degrading. Hooters has such a tacky feel, and they want you to all look the same....ewww I wanna barf thinking about the wings too.

I worked there for about 6 months. Management sucked. The girls are just as catty..fighting and stereotype was huge. The one i worked in we had to clean at the end of our shift as well as tip out (bussers, bartenders) I hated most of the girls they were so immature. 18+ Very clicky. Anyways I had fun most of the time. Depending on the night i could make 80-200. 200 more so on football, basketball games.

I don't understand why it's socially respectable and stripping is not. SMH

    I'm now considering stripping. hahahah

    ^ this.

basically any job you have short of being a cut throat attorney you're going to be treated like a piece of meat.

I read somewhere that you can't say "Hi, I'll be your server" You have to say "Hi, I'll be your hooters girl." Which just sounds horrible.
I went to hooters once when I was 15, because my hipster friends thought it would be funny and ironic or some shit. The food was ok, and the girls were nice, but I can't imagine having to be nice to gross old men who will maybe give you a five dollar tip.
Even compared to a normal job, that sounds terrible.
