There has been a number of cyber attacks over the last few weeks that are increasing in severity. The main targets are SONY owned MMO's but also Data centers and Cable providers. Last week it was Cox Communications, this week it's Time Warner. Cox was local but the Time Warner thing is much bigger to the point where not only are their sites down but so are their phone lines. They are also starting to hit Comcast. The attacks are coming from China with assist from affiliates around the globe. Hardest hit areas are the St Louis area, Southern California, Seattle and Miami.
So as it affects us, there is a major spike (as much of 70%) increase in internet congestion which creates spontaneous lag and disconnects. The reason I came aware of it is because I play WoW and all of a sudden our latency spiked up to 8500ms (normal latency is about 52 ms) before the site finally up and crashed. There is a guy/group named Lizard Squad who is claiming he is responsible but after looking closer, the size and power of the attacks is more consistent with the use of supercomputers. China has the most powerful supercomputers in the world and this is just a small wink of what is yet to come IMHO.
So those of us who are complaining about our round trip time and other strange issues affecting placement and stream, this is why.
