Question using hot rollers to curl and create volume

So I just bought a set of Remington hot rollers. They have big rollers and also a smaller size. I am hoping to create a lot of volume in my hair, like pretty and bouncy, with some loose curls.

I youtubed quite a few hot roller videos and kinda got the jist of it, but I still have some questions:

Which size do I use on the top section of my hair? The larger rollers or the smaller ones?

And where on my section of hair do I start curling? From the bottom, or do I start closer to my head and then wrap the hair around the roller?

    Thanks ladies!

I use large rollers all same size...start midway down hair and then wrap hair except for the very ends. My hair is shorter than the one in the vid so the roller ends must be facing top/bottom or north/south.....if they face east/west not a good look for me. I also alternate the curl. First ones near my face are curled towards the back of my head (always start in this direction). Then next one is curled toward my face and continue to alternate. My stylist gave me this tip.

Now this is the first vid that taught me how to hot roll which I still think is excellent. But I no longer do the top like she does. My hair is shorter than hers and I don't like all the poofiness I get. But I think you just have to experiment until you find a look that works for your hair. I also experimented w/the amount of time I left them in. I usually keep them in about 5 minutes. I think I first started off w/15 minutes and that was way toooo long for my length.

Off topic, but this is a good vid for a flat iron look: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pF1e-mEhwz

Also I believe I first bought the remington hot rollers but ended up returning them because the clamp left crimps in my hair. I later purchased conair big curls which has a teeth like clamp (just like the ones in my starter vid)....these didn't leave any demarcations.

I've never been able to get the curl from hot rollers to last more than an hour even with hairspray. How do you ladies get the curl to last? I've used Caruso Steam rollers and the curl lasts a bit longer but still not long enough. It could be that I have very long hair (elbow length) and the weight of the hair pulls the curl out.

I can show you how to do this when you get back to CO. My hair is too heavy to have the look of hot rollers stay in very long, which is why I bought that curling iron. One of the photo studios I worked at years ago I ended up doing a lot of this though, so I have the technique down. The big curlers are used at the back of the head, & the smaller ones towards the front because most people care more about curl around the face. If you can, avoid using the really small curlers. Most companies you can purchase extra of the medium or medium/large size. The medium sizes work best for most people.

I've used pretty much every type of curl/hot roller/steam roller/doo-hickie thing there is. The clampless curling irons really are the best, maybe with the excepting of rag curls... which are more sporadic.

Thanks ladies. Ill be experimenting while here in Florida so I'm ready when I get back to Colorado Springs.

Kylea: we'll have to get together to try it out.

I LOVE rollers for REAL volume (not mousse-created) and for setting the hair juuuuust right - you can get amazing, dramatic Jessica Rabbit style fringes if you set them at the right angle!
The way to use them depends on where you want the volume, as well as how much volume Usually, people want volume on the crown, so use the bigger rollers here, and make sure you roll them directly above the base (the roots of the section you're rolling) for maximum volume. The smaller ones work better for smaller sections, and are good for slotting in round the nape of the neck especially.
