I have to book a hotel room for one night next week. It's a 4-star property, but I don't want to pay full price, if I can avoid that.

Well, if you want the exact hotel, you can try priceline or expedia.
I get the best deals on hotwire but I'm not attached to particular hotels ( just like staying in 3-4 star ones on "splurge" travel days ).

I've actually had good luck directly contacting the specific hotel's manager to negotiate 'repeat business' discounts, weekly discounts etc.

Adding to the unnecessary complexity: On Expedia this hotel is marked as "sold out" on the date I need to be there. I suppose a call to the property is my next step. Fingers crossed.

Update: I called the property and negotiated the corporate rate, which was 50% the standard rate. Nice!
