    Default Pole Tricks

To those of you who are fabulous (can do inversion well etc.), How long do you think it takes to develop those skills (roughly)? I have been taking private pole lessons and can already see a dramatic improvement, but I so want to be good at this. I think it's sexy and athletic. I'm just at the point where I can climb the pole, hold on with my legs and leg go with my arms and comfortably lean back. I used to be able to do inversions, but somehow lost the strength this past year without practice. I can ALMOST taste it. I think once i loose a few pounds it will be easier. Been practicing on a chrome pole as well-much harder!

Yeah, chrome poles are a lot more difficult, but that's what I learned on. It took me about 4 months of consistent practice to be able to invert with no hands - I was also teaching myself so I'd imagine you're progressing much more quickly with a teacher. Then I stopped for a little while and when I went back, all the strength was gone I'm back at the point where I can do a hangback but I'm not totally comfortable with it. It takes time. It's one of those things that you barely notice getting better at but the second you lose that strength you realize how much stronger you really did get. After a few more months, I'm sure you'll be amazed at where you are.

My biggest piece of advice: until you know you've nailed a trick, please don't just stumble through it at the club on a busy night. Sooo many girls at my old club would do tricks that they really had no idea how to do.... and it just looked horrible - not sexy, not athletic.... it just looked like they were trying to do something, anything to show off.... It made me cringe every time I watched them.

pole work... I can climb about 20 feet up the pole and spin around slowly.. but I am soo scared to let go of it. how did you get over this.. What are some things you can do on the pole without a lot of spinning( I have ear problems) or hanging upside down?

I still hate letting go, but I practiced a lot with a roommate spotting me so I would get comfortable with knowing I wouldn't fall. When you have someone spotting you, you'll be able to play around with figuring out exactly what it feels like to have a good grip with your legs. Poles in the club get slippery, so if you go to do a trick and you don't feel like you have that secure hold, don't do it! Just bring yourself down slowly.

There are a lot of different "sits" you can do once you climb the pole and just pose pretty. I don't have my list on me but I'll find it and try to give descriptions. You could do a plank where you lean back with your body straight and one hand still on the pole, or a superman which is basically the same thing except your stomach is to the ground instead of your back. A wrist sit where you put one wrist underneath your bum and open your legs to a V. A move I used to always do when customers wanted to see "a different trick" was the teddy bear where you hold on with one armpit and lift your legs into a sitting V and hold your knees with your hands - like the position of a teddy bear. It was cool but the pole had to either be slippery enough for me to slide to the ground without being too slippery and making me crash, or sticky enough for me to stay in one spot and bring my legs down gracefully after a moment... it was tough to pull off sexily lol

Oh, there are several poses that don't require an invert or spinning. Yogini, Ballerina pose, Eagle, Fetus on a stick, Hooded Ornament to name a few.

There is a website much, much better than this but I cant find it at the moment.

The way I learned...I bought an xpole and started watching youtube videos. I've been a dancer five years and I feel that its gotten easier as I go. Its really hard starting out, ie. learning to climb and invert (soo many bruises), but once you get used to working around the pole you'll learn new moves easier. Of course there are still a few that are really tough. My knee hold hurt like hell for a while, but now it feels natural. Currently working on a handspring...still needs a LOT of work, lol.

Keep up with the practicing...its the only way to get good. I don't know about clubs in your area, but it pays off here. Customers really appreciate the effort, especially since there are only a few real pole dancers in my club. Everyone else just walks around the stage. Boringgg

As for the time it takes, its really up to you...The more you practice, the more quickly you'll pick things up. Good luck!
