Default My cat has a UTI :(

Well, she's showing every symptom of it.
I am so sad and have been crying all day. The ER wont even give her an exam without money up front, which I don't have at all. I don't even have 1.00 money is SO tight until the 1st. I told them there is a lil blood in the lil drop of urine that she strained to push out…and begged and cried for them to help, but they turn me away.
I don't know what to do i feel so helpless… She doesn't act as if she is in pain, but I know she is.
Is there anything I can do????

So sorry your kitty is sick. Its not going to go away on its own. She needs veterinary attention. Borrow money from a friend or relative. It would be just an exam, maybe blood tests and some antibiotics. We are only talk in the low hundreds here, not thousands. Also you will want to start a pet care account or get pet insurance for future. Animals are expensive and stuff like this happens all the time. Its not fair to her if shes suffering.

Can any animal charities in your area help, maybe with at least a low-cost exam or something? Also, I'm not sure how it is near you but where I live there's a thing called Care Credit which is like a pet credit card you can apply for at the Vets Office that they'll put your charges on.

Feed her yogurt? Give her a bunch of cranberries to play with? How the hell does a cat get a UTI?

    Jeepers!

Just call in a few favors, scour your couch cushions, take out a pay-day loan and ask for money from relatives.

    Stop crying and take action.

Animals can get pretty much any disease a human gets, their body systems are almost all the same as ours. Don't try and feed her yogurt or cranberries - she won't eat them anyway. Cats only recognize food they have been introduced to in the first 6 months of their lives. And whatever u do don't feed her any human medicine either. Some human medicines are toxic to animals. People always seem to think it's a good idea to give their pets Tylenol which kills them. See a vet asap.

Im goin to the vet soon as they open next door to my house I have been up with her all night on the kitchen floor she never sleeps out here but she did last night it seems like its taking forever for 8am to roll around… its 542am now. I have a friend sending me money for Western union. Hopefully he does it fast!
Cats wont eat cranberries. LOL I wish I would try to give mittens some fruit she would roll her eyes at me. She does however eat Honey Nut Cheerios. (dropped one on the floor from my bowl and she snatched it right up) Oh i love my Mittens.
Let y'all know what the vet says today. Its not an emergency vet so maybe will be a lil cheaper. If they can get me in today

I'm not a vet (and thank god you're taking her to one!) but once this is resolved consider adding wet food to her diet if you haven't already. Dehydration is a common cause of UTIs in domesticated cats because they tend not to drink much water -- they evolved from wild cats who got most of their water from meat. Exclusively dry food plus a tendency not to drink water = disaster. It's important to prevent this from happening again in the future because it can cause permanent damage to her urinary tract. Of course your vet will tell you what to do though.

Whereabouts are you in the US..? There are organisations that may be able to help - take a look at the listings here - my apologies if you have already tried any of them:

Yep, Ive heard this same thing. Last time I tried to give her moist food, years ago…she would NOT eat it. But I guess if it's her only option, she will get used to it! She needs to get a job if she prefers the expensive stuff that leads to expensive bills. She already eats for an army. lol

Do WHATEVER you have to do to get that kitty medical attention. I have lost cats to UTI's left too long.

Sadly, the last kitty I lost - we had no idea what was going on. It's a long story, but the UTI was what got him. Poor thing.

Try the listings Puss put up. Your kitty needs help! You both are in my thoughts!

As for the yogurt, my older boy BEGS for yogurt. The minute I open it up he won't leave me alone. So yes, some cats do like yogurt. However, the bad thing is that dairy can give cats the "runs".

Some human medications can be given to pets but its really tricky & you don't want to overdose the kitty, so call a vet before you try anything like that & make sure to let them know what the kitty weighs.

OMG my cat is obsessed with yogurt! It's the only food that she'll jump up on the table for (in my presence at least).

would a hot compress do the trick.

I was thinking wrap kitty in a towel so that you don't have to fight a frightened biting and scratched cat.

Stroke and pet your cat to call it. Apply a hot compress to kitties lower belly and urethra. Heat may relax the spasm and kitty may pee.

Well I dropped mittens off at the vet. I had no plans of how to pay for her when i pick her up… but I didn't care. I came home from my own doctor, and found her lying on the floor. I thought she was dead she wouldn't respond at all. I rushed her next door to the vet and they took her back instantly. I heard her cry when they touched her tummy, then I started crying. I finally left when they told me they will take care of her, and that the exam will cost roughly $400.00. I said Ok thank you.
So I get home, having NO idea how Im gonna come up with the money. I mean, I literally took my coins to coinstar the other day for money. But Tony walked in and saw me crying and I said I took mittens to the vet she is gonna die and he hugged me and said she will be ok i said THE BILL IS 400 RIGHT NOW he said I don't care ill take care of it, tell em do whatever they gotta do. Here I was thinking he didn't care the whole time But I guess if a man who hates cats, is willing to pay 400 plus for my cat, he must really love me, huh?. He got paid today thank God. But they are keeping her over night, they couldn't get a urine sample from her. They found tons of leukocytes which are white cells, which are fighting infection.
Sooooo ,everything is Ok. I miss my baby. I knew I have always loved her for the past 6 years, but I never realized how much she really means to me, when I almost lost her. I really love that cat. I hope she knows that Im trying to help her, and that I didn't abandon her in that vets office….

Kidney infection (pyelonephritis) is usually due to ascending bacteria, although hematogenous spread is possible. The organisms and predisposing causes are similar to those of bacterial cystitis. Renoliths and ureteroliths, which impede the normal flow of urine out of the renal pelvis, are a common cause. In young dogs or cats, congenital malformations (eg, ectopic ureters) are a predisposing cause. Animals at risk for pyelonephritis are the very young, the very old, the immunosuppressed, or those with inadequate urine-concentrating ability. In many instances, an underlying cause is not identified.
Animals with acute pyelonephritis exhibit kidney or flank pain, fever, malaise, and sometimes vomiting, polyuria, and polydipsia. Urinalysis shows proteinuria, pyuria, bacteriuria, and/or hematuria. WBC casts are often present in fresh urine sediment. The urine culture is usually positive; the CBC may show leukocytosis with a left shift. The biochemical profile may be normal or show azotemia (prerenal or renal) and/or hyperglobulinemia. The animal may be in renal failure. Chronic pyelonephritis is more difficult to recognize because clinical signs may be subtle or absent. Polyuria and polydipsia are frequent. In many cases, the disease goes unrecognized until renal failure occurs. Although abnormalities in the urinalysis are present, they are often less dramatic than with acute kidney infection. A single urine culture can be negative if bacterial numbers are low. Other useful diagnostic tests include renal ultrasonography and IV pyelograms. Both studies may show dilation of one or both renal pelvises secondary to inflammation and partial obstruction. Asymmetric renal size and architectural changes with renal pelvic dilatation is highly suggestive of chronic pyelonephritis. In some cases, nephropyelocentesis via ultrasonographic guidance is useful to obtain a sample of urine from the dilated renal pelvis for analysis and culture.
Pyelonephritis should be treated aggressively with broad-spectrum antibiotics, based on urine culture and antimicrobial susceptibility testing, for 4-6 wk. The infection may respond to the same antibiotics recommended for cystitis, but more frequent administration (eg, amoxicillin tid rather than bid) and/or higher dosages are indicated. A fluoroquinolone or a combination of a fluoroquinolone with a β-lactam antibiotic is often effective. Dosages should be the same as for other soft-tissue infections. Animals that are febrile, anorectic, dehydrated, or azotemic should be hospitalized for IV antibiotics and fluid therapy. Fluid therapy may prevent acute pyelonephritis from progressing to acute renal failure and will improve renal perfusion and uremic signs in animals already in renal failure. Animals with acute pyelonephritis may recover normal renal function, depending on the amount of damage that occurred prior to treatment. In selected cases of chronic pyelonephritis with a severely hydronephrotic, nonfunctional kidney, a nephrectomy may be the treatment of choice once the animal has been stabilized. This will remove the source of infection and hopefully save the opposite kidney. IV pyelography and/or renal scintigraphy are useful to assess the relative function of each kidney. If both kidneys are severely affected, medical management alone is the only alternative. Recovery to chronic, stable renal failure is possible in many cases.
The urine should be cultured after the first 5-7 days of therapy to assess antibiotic efficacy. A urinalysis and culture should be repeated 3-5 days following therapy, and then monthly for 3 consecutive months. If all of these cultures are negative, the interval between urine cultures may be gradually lengthened. Animals with pyelonephritis are at high risk for persistence or recurrence of kidney infection.

I am not a Veterinarian but I can read a book. IF you feel you have nothing more to lose then try this.

Now if I am reading this correctly Kitty needs a few doses of amoxicillin.

If kitty is lethargic then probably intravenous fluids.

    Easy enough.

Local farm store has Amoxicillin and syringes.

    small guage needles

One 75 cc syringe and a few small guage needles inject saline under the skin at the back of the neck. Kitty will absorb naturally.

Amoxicillin is in the coolers, 2 ccs in a small 10 cc syringe once in the morning and once in the evening do it for 10 days

Here's another organization that might be able to help with the finances.

    http://www.imom.org

Their mission is to help people help their pets, even when the people are having financial difficulties.

I've never had to apply to them, so I don't know their requirements, but it's another potential resource--and it never hurts to ask, right?

Keeping my fingers and toes crossed and sending out healing thoughts for your dear cat.

Ive already taken her to the vet. I would probably do more harm than good poking her with needles!

Is it normal to be so in love with your pet? Am I strange? LOL I feel like all my friends are rolling their eyes at me crying over my cat! Well, they are not, but they don't understand how I have been feeling.

IMHO, you are not strange or abnormal at all!

It's my feeling that animals give us unconditional love, so it's not strange at all when we humans feel affection for them.

Your cat is totally dependent upon you for good care; I think that it's admirable that you take this responsibility so much to heart.

(I have a dog, so I believe that I understand your feelings!)

Once again, keeping fingers and toes crossed for your cat's speedy recovery--I'll ask my dog to keep her paws crossed, too!

Not at all! I love animals so much more than people! And I would do anything for my two pups; when they're sick and I don't know how to help I absolutely freak out. If I had been in your situation, I too would have been sleeping beside her on the floor

I really really hope your cat's okay!!

Dude there is a reason why Im studying for 5 years to become a vet. You can't just read a book and fix a problem. Tests need to be run. I repeat DO NOT GIVE YOUR ANIMALS HUMAN MEDICATION. This is really really really bad idea. You are not a doctor. She doesnt even know for sure what the problem is. It may well be a kidney infection but what if its not? What if its a problem with the internal or external sphincter of the bladder? I cant believe you would even suggest this... As a vet student I do not recommend attempting to treat your own pet... even I wouldnt do that. They are a lot more fragile then us. One small mistake can be fatal for them.
